Questions for Daniel Tammet: Questions for Malcolm Gladwell:

1. How did you feel when you knew 1. How did you determinate a specific
about the death of your grandfather? time to success?
I was terrified. I mean he died because According to the researches that I did I
of epilepsy and I had one when I was a know that some people can reach
child. I could have died. success in short time but that quantity of
people is low percent, the majority of
people do it in the time that I wrote. It’s
an approximate.
2. How your life changed after the 2. Why you made the decision of writing
documentary? a book?
People usually looked at me a lot for I realized that everybody wants to be
being special but after that documentary successful but only few people know
they looked at me more because more how to do it so I wanted to show the way.
people knew about me. In my book everybody can learn step by
step.
3. What motived you to create your own 3. How much time did you take to get all
language? the information for your book?
I liked languages and I decided to create Searching about statistics and

easily.

I think Frank’s life was more difficult than Marla’s life because Marla had only physical obstacles but
Frank also had emotional problems because of his father’s abandonment and he moved alone to
another country, the shame of his past. Maybe for that reason, Marla had more triumphs than him.
Although they had similar triumphs, both managed to be teachers and authors of a bestseller. But
Marla could be athlete despite her condition and public speaker coach. However, I like two stories
serve to motive others when they have obstacles.

First, they are both used in medicine and cause an emotional impact. But genetic testing is a
conventional medicine and laughter therapy is an alternative medicine. Laughter therapy is more
reliable than genetic testing because there is not necessary to interpret the result of genetic testing
however laughter therapy has demonstrated have good results. Genetic testing is only to know if you
have an illness and it needs to examinate your blood or saliva but laughter therapy is a treatment and
you don’t need any exam. Also, for genetic testing you have to go to the hospital but laughter therapy
can be in any place.

Many people who suffer from ASD are not flexible.

According to Gladwell, to transform talent into expertise we need at least 10000 hours.

aa
Mmmm A lack of structure makes feel Daniel Tammet anxious.

For many people with ASD, the social interaction is difficult.

Scans of the brains of autistic savants suggest that the right hemisphere might
compensate for the damage of the left.

To retain large amounts of information is usually not a problem for autistic savants.

Daniel Tammet memorized pi to 22,514 decimal places to show people that, although
he has a disability, it doesn’t stop him from being successful.

Dear teacher, thanks for sharing with us the story of your childhood. It really motivated me to fight to
achieve my goals because despite the misery you went through you achieved impressive things like
being a teacher, writer and even author of a bestseller. My experience in college was common, it
made me feel stress and anxious because I had a lot of things to do there. Sometimes I wanted to
give up because the process in the college is really hard. But remembering your story helped me to
continue because without studies you achieved so much and I did have studies had to be able to
finish college. You inspired me to get the better grades so I graduated with some honors and algo I
got a scholarship to study abroad. You also inspired me to write, I’ve always liked the literature but I
didn’t dare to start. Now I’m traveling to Europe while I write my book, it's about not giving up despite
obstacles.

Questions for Norman Cousins:

1. Did you consider conventional medicine as an alternative?
For a moment I did think about that but I decided to try laughter therapy because I had always
been interested in medicine and in Hans’s work. The way he describes it in his book is very
trustworthy.
2. Did you have to change the environment in which you related?
Of course, I had to change everything around me, my routine, my friends, my things.
Absolutely everything had to contribute to my recovery.
3. Did you consult with a doctor to start your laughter therapy?
No, I didn’t consider necessary to do it because the author of the book that I read is a
specialist and the book is about the researches that he has done.
4. Why did you think that treatment was more reliable?
Because the fundamentals had a lot of sense and I analyzed them thoroughly. Also, when I
started the treatment, I wanted to try and I realized that it was working really well so I decided
to continue until the end.
DRAFT:

1 Stephen Wiltshire is considered a genius because he has an incredible skill. He is capable of

drawing landscapes just viewing them one time because he can retain the images in his memory.
When he was a child, he couldn't talk so his talent compensated that disability because he used his
drawings to communicate. When he was 3 years old, he was diagnosed with TEA. With his
persistence he could talk when he was 10 years old. Now he is known worldwide but he cannot
exhibit his works in some of the most prestigious museums in the world because of his condition.
Although he has assimilated that I think the people should be more flexible because he is autistic but
it has some benefits. Stephen has become an expertise because he has had a lot of interaction with
the art since he was a toddler that's why he could practice a lot.

2 My mother is a great example of perseverance, although she didn't have the means, she managed
to be successful. She had a miserable childhood because she lived in poverty and she was
diagnosed with allergies. Also, she lost her father in death and she had to stay with her mother who
didn't have a good character. My mother yearned for change her life in any moment but she made
bad decisions. She got pregnant when she was only 17 years. She felt a lot of shame but also, she
felt tormented because her family abandoned her in that situation. She was really hopelessness and
defeated but the family of my father accepted that she lived with them. When she was living with my
father, she realized that he was immature because he had also had a difficult childhood. Despite her
problems she had to help to my father and that process was really hard. Everybody thought she
would be dilapidated but now she has a lovely family and two business.

3 Genetic testing involves examining DNA, the chemical database that contains instructions for how
the body functions. In a genetic test, a sample of a person's blood, skin, hair, or other tissue is
analyzed because they are linked to their DNA. It is analyzed for the purpose of studying its DNA,
chromosomes or proteins.
I agree with the genetic test because it’s useful to detect if there is any modification or mutation
associated with a genetic disease. That is, genetic analysis can reveal changes in genes that can
cause diseases and conditions. They can also make someone more likely to have certain medical
problems (such as some types of cancer). So, this test helps to identify the risk factor.
The interpretation of the result can define the situation and have a significant impact on people's lives.
If the result is positive, the test can help people make informed decisions about how to manage their
medical care and start appropriate treatment to treat the detected disease. And if the test result is
negative, it can give you a sense of relief from the uncertainty.
Carrying out a genetic test has the expected benefit of certifying a diagnosis that allows knowing and
adequately explaining the implications to the patient and their families, knowing the prognosis and
implementing a more appropriate management for each patient. If Alec Jeffreys hadn’t invented this
test, many people wouldn’t have detected their diseases on time. Over time this test has proven to be
reliable because it directly analyzes our cells.
