Sadhguru: Today, we want to see to what extent we can explore apana vayu. The prana vayu
generally moves from the navel up. That is why there is this breathing from the navel to the pit of
the throat. Apana vayu moves from Manipuraka, which is just below the navel, down to the
Muladhara.
Physiologically, energetically, psychologically, and emotionally, you want a balanced platform.
Because without balance, none of your faculties – your intelligence, your talents, your
capabilities – can ever find fulfillment. If we want balanced growth, as we take care of the
upward movement of energy, we also take care of the downward movement of energy.
𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈𝐬 𝐀𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐕𝐚𝐲𝐮?
Apana represents the excretory system, not just in terms of the digestive process – excretion
needs to happen on the cellular level all across the body. Otherwise, the body tends to become
dense. Keeping the body clean on all levels is very important. If every cell in your body is as
clean as possible and you stand in a gentle breeze, you will feel like the air is passing through
you. It is not, but if the breeze touches you, you can feel that the sensory transmission is going
much deeper than the skin, which essentially means you are becoming sensitive to life.
Life sensitivity means you experience life in larger proportions than people normally do. For this
to happen, it is important that your apana vayu is active and your system is clean. To keep a place
externally clean is important. To keep your system clean is even more important. There are
various levels of impurities – karmic, genetic, samskarik (enduring impact of genetic memory).
𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐔𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐥𝐲 𝐆𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬
Through daily transactions of food, water, and physical contact, you gather impurities. These
impurities manifest themselves in the physical, mental, and energy bodies. The levels of suffering
in your body, mind, emotions, and energetic condition are determined by the level of impurities
you have.
Purification is one thing – not messing it up is another thing. There are people who do a lot of
purification work, but they keep messing it up every day. So the first thing is not to mess it up,
then to clean. Or if it is very dirty, first clean, and then do not mess it up.
There are many levels to purify yourself. What you eat and drink; how you breathe, sit, stand, and
interact with people, what kind of sounds you utter and hear, what kind of atmospheres you create
for yourself and everyone around you – all these things are important. Whether you spend time in
joy, affection, resentment, hatefulness, or anger – accordingly, the level of impurities will be that
you gather in the system.
𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬, 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠?
Impurities are largely in the secretions and fluids of the body; they could be either acidic or
alkaline. These two aspects must be well-balanced. If acid increases a lot, it will burn out the
system from inside. A whole lot of people are doing this to themselves – every day, they are
burning themselves out in their mind, emotions, and energies, and because of that, the body
suffers in many ways.
Especially those of you who are aspiring for spiritual growth or even mysticism – you need a
good mechanism. A good mechanism means the least amount of friction. If nothing has gathered,
everything is clean, it functions smoothly. Whatever we want to do with it becomes easy. If you
want this life to perform at its highest level, then purification in everything you do is needed.
𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐎𝐮𝐭 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐖𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐬 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐃𝐨𝐰𝐧?
How to live at the peak of everything you can do in your life? For this, the tool is Yoga, to be at
the peak all the time – physically, mentally, emotionally, and energetically.
Apana vayu is a tremendous force. It has many manifestations within the system. If you over-
activate it without knowing what you are doing, beyond that point, it will take away things that
should not be taken away. If apana is not well activated, you will have a poor elimination system.
When your elimination process or excretory process is poor, there will be density in the system;
you will feel opaque or heavy in the body, though your body weight may be the same. You may
have noticed that on some days, your body feels light; on other days, your body feels heavy. Not
because you have lost or put on weight. When a certain amount of cleanliness has happened, the
body will naturally feel light. Your very body can be happy.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝𝐧’𝐭 𝐒𝐤𝐢𝐩
You must check this every day when you wake up in the morning – is the body happy and
looking forward to the day? This is not about your mental process. If you observe the body, you
will know whether it is on or wants to be off. If the body wants to be off, it means death. If there
is no cleanliness in the body, it wants to be inactive because it is suffocating inside.
You know how difficult it is to breathe and how suffocating it becomes when your nostrils are
blocked. Similarly, there are many passages that could be blocked. It is very important to eat the
kind of food that clears the passages. Food is not just about nourishment but about cleanliness. It
should not stay in the system for long. When you are doing sadhana, it is important to eat
something that does not stick in you. When it has done its job, it must be excreted. Not a speck of
it should remain within you.
Cleanliness is not just of the digestive tract – there are more complex spaces that need to be
cleaned. The simplest thing to clean is the alimentary canal; if that is not clean, how to clean your
brain?
𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐒𝐚𝐝𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦?
There are practices that focus solely on the apana vayu, but they are not suitable for most people.
If you want to keep the whole system clean, it is best to learn Shakti Chalana Kriya, which
addresses all the five vayus. Within the Shakti Chalana Kriya, the first three Kriyas are all about
prana vayu. Mahath Prana Kriya/Kapalabhati is for samat vayu. Swana Kriya is about the apana
vayu. Similarly, Kaka Kriya is for udana vayu and Naga Kriya is for vyana vayu. You need to
cultivate the different vayus in a balanced way.
Too much of any one of these vayus will cause imbalances. If there is a little more prana vayu or
samat vayu, which are major forces, it will not be a problem. But if there is a little more of any of
the other three, which are subtler in nature, it can cause a very skewed situation in the system.
You may draw people’s attention because you may act a little freakish. You may become more
socially incompetent if you raise these kinds of things. It is important that the five vayus are
cultivated in a very balanced way.
𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐃𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦?
How do you cleanse yourself? One simple thing is, at least twice a month, for twenty-four hours,
go without food; just have water. Brahmacharis and many others in the Isha Yoga Center are
doing that on every Ekadashi, which is the best day to do that. On the evening before, you eat,
and only next day evening, you eat again. After some time, you will get used to it. If you are
doing enough sadhana, it will not be a problem.
Otherwise, if you are feeling tired, you can squeeze a lemon into the water, and maybe add a
spoon of honey – it will keep you going. Doing this twice a month along with your regular
practices will ensure body is clean.
𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐃𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐌𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡
But the simplest and most wonderful way to arrive at cleanliness is to be in a blissful state. There
is scientific evidence that when you are joyful and pleasant, your body chemistry becomes clean.
Your experience is in many ways rooted in your chemistry. If your chemistry is getting
contaminated by what you generate within you, then initially, you will get unhappy. Later on, it
will turn into ill health and all kinds of suffering.
When your body or mind is generating a chemistry you do not want, over a period of time, it
accumulates and becomes a compulsive behavioral pattern. Then you may say, “This is how I am.
This is my nature.” This is not your nature – this is what you have made out of yourself.
𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐁𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐕𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟
As a human being, you have the privilege to make yourself whatever you want. The apana vayu
plays a significant role in making this happen for yourself. It is about cleanliness of what we hear
and say, how we move around, and what thoughts and emotions we have. How do you take care
of that? Inner Engineering.
At different stages of life, different things will occur, but it is very, very important that the
fundamentals are not lost. Remind yourself of the five fundamentals of Inner Engineering every
day, or several times a day if needed. This is a simple way of staying blissful.
𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐀𝐥𝐥 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞
If you are falling off here and there, it is because you are imbalanced. If you fall when someone
touches you, it is because you are imbalanced. That is why the yogic practices, the sadhana – to
bring balance to the system. Daily practice is to see that you are not wobbling. Above all balance.
You can cleanse your system with simple practices, but it is important that they are done in
balance. The significance of apana is that it is predominantly a downward moving force.
Everyone thinks going up is more important, but standing on the ground firmly is equally
important. The apana vayu creates that possibility.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐘𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦
If on two days a month, preferably on Ekadashi, you have only water and do the complete Shakti
Chalana Kriya twice that day, it will greatly enhance the cleansing process.
The greatest tool ever devised to really cleanse the body absolutely inside out is the system of
Hatha Yoga. It is a harder way, but if you give yourself to it, you will see the effect after some
time. I am speaking from my own experience, based on those few years when my Hatha Yoga
and Angamardana happened, no matter what kind of activity I was in or where I was.
Today, at 64, I am still far more resilient than a whole lot of young men out here, physically – I
am not even talking about other aspects. This is not to boast about myself. What I am saying is,
you need to invest time. Simply invest yourself into sadhana. I am not someone who invests my
life in doing something that does not work.
𝐀𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐆𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐬
We are investing our lives and everyone’s lives into this process because it works like nothing
else. It functions beyond what you understand as life, and beyond what medical science knows as
physical and mental health today. Life is a certain sense of wholeness; there is an intrinsic
integrity to life. Yoga is about strengthening that. If you strengthen it, you do not have to worry
about life.
In whichever way and form life comes, you will hit it well. But if you are not prepared, you are
always hoping for a sweet ball to come your way. If a hard ball comes your way, what will you
do? Let the hardest ball come. So what – we will hit it well. That is all there is to life. If you
invest focus, intensity, and attention on that, there will be no regret.

Sadhguru: As one’s awareness gains the needed sharpness or keenness, one of the first things that
one naturally becomes aware of is the breath. The breath being a mechanical action in the body
that is constant and continuous, it is truly amazing how most human beings live without being
conscious of it. But once the breath comes into your awareness, it becomes an amazing process.
No wonder breath watching is probably the most practiced form of meditation today. It is so basic
and simple, but it comes so easy and naturally that it does not need any preparation.
If you become a little more conscious, the breath will naturally come into your awareness. I was
six or seven years of age when I started to enjoy the breath. Just watching the constant, rhythmic
movement of my little chest and belly kept me interested and engaged for hours. It was only
much later that the idea of meditation entered my life. But if you are a bit conscious, you cannot
ignore the simple rhythm of the breath that is going on endlessly.
Most people notice the breath only when their body goes into bronchial spasm or excessive
breath. They are missing the normal breath, simply because they have a serious attention issue.
These days, people are carrying their attention deficiencies like a qualification.
𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞
Bringing attention into your life and particularly into the lives of our children is most important.
Ultimately, whether it is spiritual or material, the world yields to you only to the extent that you
are willing to pay attention to it.
Focusing on the breath is a forceful attempt to do that. But it is also a way of making you
conscious. The important thing is not to focus on the breath but to raise the pitch of your
awareness in such a way that you are naturally conscious of your breath. The breath is such a
mechanical process. In a minor way, the body is going through a spasm every moment you inhale
and exhale. How can you miss it unless you are completely lost in your psychological
framework? Unless you are totally lost in your own thoughts and emotions, if you simply sit
down, there is no way you can miss the process of the breath. Including something into your
awareness is not an act. There is no effort involved in this.
When we teach a certain process, we may ask people to focus on the breath because the necessary
level of awareness is not there. But otherwise, if you simply sit, there is no way you cannot be
conscious of the breath, unless you are lost in thought. So, do not be lost in your own thought – it
is not of much consequence, as it comes from a very limited possibility of information. If you
stay with it, the breath could become an access to a larger possibility. Right now, the process of
breath itself may not be in most people’s awareness. They may only be conscious of the
sensations caused by the movement of air in their nostrils or lungs.
If you simply sit or lie down, staying still in every way, the breath will become such a big
process, and it is on all the time. It is amazing how so many people can live without noticing it,
without being conscious of it every moment of their life. Staying focused on the breath is one
way to get there. Those of you who are initiated into Shoonya may find that if you simply sit
there without doing anything, suddenly the breath seems to be happening in such a big way. The
breath actually is a very big thing, though you may not realize it until you lose it.
You may have heard the Bhaja Govindam chant, where it says, Nischala tatvam, jeevan mukti.
What this means is if there is an unwavering attention towards something, no matter what the
thing is, then liberation, the possibility of freedom cannot be denied to you. In other words, the
essential problem of human beings is lack of attention. With keenness and intensity of attention,
you can open just about any door in this universe. It all depends on how keen and intense your
attention is, and how much energy there is behind your attention. In this context, the breath is a
beautiful device because it is constantly on, as long as we are alive. The breath is there all the
time. You just have to be conscious.

𝙒𝙝𝙮 𝙙𝙤 𝙥𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚 𝙜𝙚𝙩 𝙏𝙝𝙮𝙧𝙤𝙞𝙙 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙗𝙡𝙚𝙢𝙨?

Questioner: Sadhguru, these days, many people are diagnosed with thyroid problems, either
hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. Even though we are consuming iodized salt, still thyroid
problems are prevalent. What is the cause for the increase in these problems? Is it stress-related
like diabetes or hypertension? Can we overcome these conditions with Hatha Yoga, or Kriya, or
being in a consecrated space like Isha Yoga Center? What are the things we can do to come out of
it?
Sadhguru: I think a whole lot of people have come out of it with Hatha Yoga practice, no
question about it. Being in a consecrated place definitely adds to it. But this is a pretty widespread
manifestation of thyroid imbalance. See, we must understand this. What you’re calling as thyroid
- in Yoga, we don’t look at the glands like that but - medically, what you’re calling as thyroid is
that secretion within you, is trying to calibrate your system on a daily basis. It’s just calibrating
how much digestion should happen, how much energy should be produced, how much fat should
be produced, how much muscle should be built, everything, it’s trying to calibrate your physical
structure. Your physical structure is very closely related to your psychological structure. Today,
there is substantial evidence to show you that if you sit here and think of the mountain, your
glandular function will happen in a certain way, if you think about a tiger, it’ll happen another
way, you think about a ocean, it’ll happen another way, you think of a man or a woman, it’ll
happen another way. Just a thought – nothing, no contact with mountain, no contact with tiger, no
contact with man, woman or ocean – just a thought will fluctuate the glandular function. I’m
saying that is how fine the system is, that it is trying to calibrate everything to keep you in a good
place. The problem with you is you need a bullock cart because you are the missing link
(Laughs). You need a bullock cart, but they gave you a fine spaceship, tch. Every little thing will
do a world of things. Simply if you touch it, it’ll go boom, waves of stuff happening in the
system. Simply if you look like this (Gestures) and make one conclusion about the tree, this
(Referring to oneself) will go into many varieties of chemical and other kinds of variations.
Glandular functions will change. wherever you may be, Whether you’re in Mumbai, or New
York, or London, wherever just look at the situation in which you’re walking. Maybe socially,
you’ve gotten used to those things. But look at the kind of atmosphere you’re walking in, the
number of things that are happening. None of them are conducive for this life (Referring to
oneself). You might have gotten adjusted to it, maybe now you can’t live out of those cities,
that’s another matter but the life that you are, is not seeking that kind of atmosphere. So the
number of variations that are happening within you are not in your favor.
Glandular dysfunction is just one manifestation. A very highly calibrated function of glandular
function, one thing is the thyroid. It’s easily noticeable, the first thing, your physiological and
psychological parameters get thrown off a bit, simply because of disturbance. And another
dimension is the disturbance that’s happening from within you – your own psychological
patterns.
Another dimension of disturbance is what kind of food is getting into you. There is no way you
can eat anything today, which is not chemically infested. If you’re eating very organic food, it’s
little organic chemicals they’re using. It’s come to that place. It’s very difficult to eat something
that’s just grown in the wild forest, you can pluck out something and eat. That’s very, very little.
Not even a small percentage of people are capable of eating that anymore. It’s all from the
marketplace. And what goes into the marketplace is all about More, not about What. And also
this, in this country (Laughs) All these things are gone now, don’t worry. My grandmother, every
day the vegetable-seller, you know, they used to come home with a basket, just then in the
morning they would have plucked, by 7:30, 8:00 they are at the doorstep. When they come and
she will look at this. When she wants to buy it, she won’t allow the vegetable-seller to touch the
vegetables. They plucked and brought it, it’s fresh, just now it’s come off the plant but if it has to
go into the balance or if she has to choose one, two, three, four, like this, she won’t let them touch
it. “You don’t touch my vegetables.” This is not to keep bacteria away. She doesn’t want that
woman or that man to touch the vegetables that her children and grandchildren will eat. She will
touch it in a certain way, tch, she will fondle it, she’ll caress it, she’ll look at it like this, like this
(Gestures) and then she will cut it and make it. Don’t think this is all funny. If all these things are
missing in your life, you have to take pills to manage your glandular function. And there is no
way by popping a pill you can get it into balance. You can suppress it, you cannot get it into
proper balance, no way, because every day it’s different, every moment it’s different. This is
calibration, a very active calibration that’s happening. You kill it and just take a pill and
somehow manage – you are a little dysfunctional machine. With this dysfunction, this
dysfunctional machine will manifest in so many ways. And you will only know it when you
stretch it.
When you’re living with minimal stuff, it won’t show up. It’s like this. See, even if you have a
flat tyre on your car, at twenty kilometers you can drive home, you know. Some things will crack
up, some things will tear up, but still you can drive. Only if you’re hitting two-hundred kilometers
per hour, then if the tyre goes flat, then you know you fly off the road. So, that’s all it is. If all
these things are taken care of well, now when you rev up your life to function at a much higher
level, simply it’ll go. Now you rev up your life without bringing that balance, then you see it’ll
freak. You will see this happening all around you every day. So, to invest that much into our
lives, well, you can’t leave your city and go and live in the jungle. You can’t leave the
atmospheres and go away. At least you must equip yourself, so that those things don’t have too
much impact on you. It’ll anyway have impact, but how much is the question, how much impact?
At least within your home, surround yourself with some plants. If there is no space, fill your
room. This is going to have some freaky bedrooms . Open up half the roof. “Oh, but there’s
another floor above, Sadhguru”. Okay, open up the damn wall, so that some sunlight comes into
you. Yes. Not everything is closed and just one air conditioner is going brrrr all the time. This is
one thing. The reverberations around you are freaking this body completely. All the time brrrr,
Particularly when I’m outside the country, particularly in United States – even in Europe, it’s
little better – in United States, all the time something is buzzing, hmmm, endlessly. When I come
here, it’s like (Gestures), you know just still, which makes you alive. Everything is buzzing, you
are like poof. Most people are not conscious of it, but it’s happening to them. The very fact that
they’re sleeping eight hours a day is just that, that they’re not living in their natural habitat. They
are trying to protect themselves by sleeping. So, to protect yourself from disease, to protect
yourself from mental illnesses, to protect yourself from all kinds of imbalances, you sleep eight-
ten hours a day. This is half your life, you’re dead. Death is always a good fix but that’s not the
fix we’re looking for. We’re looking for a life fix, not an end fix. If you end something, it is
fixed, isn’t it? Hmm? Fixed or no? Fixed, but not the way we want. We want to be here, alive and
be fully fixed. So if this has to happen, you can – I know you may look freaky, even I will think
you’re freaky - but you can bring some plant life into place where you sleep.
When you walk, you must always be conscious of the life other than human life. Most people are
not even conscious of the human beings, so I am reminding you, you must be conscious of
everything that is alive. A tree, a plant, a blade of grass, a grasshopper hopping and the people
that you don’t like are passing by, all kinds of things. You must be alive to everything. Don’t
need to do any “Oh, I love the tree”! You don’t have to love the tree, you have to be nourished by
it, that’s the only way to live. You like it or not, it’s nourishing you right now. Consciously if you
do it, everything will work better.
Something as simple as being alive to everything around you indiscriminately may regularize
your thyroid problems. Tch, of course, morning hatha yoga is there, kriyas are there, all these
things will definitely help. And the powerfully consecrated spaces are there, many things. One of
the main reasons is, human beings are becoming less and less active as technology grows. In a
day, an average human being, how much activity, physical activity, they used to perform in the
past, previous generations of people and how much physical activity all of us are performing right
now, is abysmally low. With such a low level of activity, keeping the balance in the system is
difficult.
So a little imbalance, don’t go to bed. If you feel little imbalanced, you must get… jump into
activity. Wherever activity is happening with some vigor and joy, you must jump into that
activity, and do more and more of it if you’re feeling sick – really, because the moment you go
back, you are empowering that. Well, if you’re very ill, that’s a different thing but otherwise,
We’re talking about essentially glandular dysfunction of various kinds, activity is a simple
solution for everything. And don’t make activity – for those of you in New York, I’m telling you
– don’t make activity… You have that health band on your thing (Gestures). Ten steps
(Gestures), twelve steps (Gestures) (Laughter) – don’t do this, that’s not the way to do activity,
you may get more sick by doing that. Simply, joyfully doing something. Being joyfully alive.
Activity is - if you do not know how to sit here and be exuberantly alive, just go and play a game,
run around simply. Just imitate the grasshopper when you’re walking (Laughter). Try. Why not?
You never did this? This’s the problem with you (Few laugh). When you go now, I want to see
you (Gestures) because you’re going to walk on the grass, you better grow like a grasshopper,
chuk, chuk, chuk, chuk, chuk (Gestures). You will see how much aliveness will happen with you.
Essentially, you your fundamental problem is you have become bloody serious about your life.
So, we have to again remind you, you will die anyway, don’t be so serious about it, because it’ll
get over in no time. You must loosen the grip. Now if you loosen the grip, that last scene can be
different. Otherwise, people see you (Gestures) That’s a great thing that happened to you – you
loosened the grip. Now itself if you loosen the grip, you will see life will happen wonderfully
well for you.

Sadhguru: There have been teachers who taught goodness to people. There have been others who
taught evil to people. But there have also been teachers who did everything to destroy both good
and evil so that life may happen just the way it should, not by some principles of goodness or
some thoughts and emotions of the ego. Only then one will know what it means to be silent
within oneself. Good people cannot be silent. Evil people cannot be silent. Only those who do not
pay attention to either, who just pay attention to the process of life, can be truly silent.
𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬
Silence means you have no stuff of your own going on. Silence does not mean that I do not hear
the birds chirping or the clash and thunder of the sun rising. Silence simply means that I have
stopped making the noise. All noises fundamentally began because you have created a division
about this and that. When there is this and that, there can be no silence. Only where there is this
and this, there can be silence.
Everywhere, this same question keeps coming: “How much spirituality should I do?” How much
ever you do, you will be in trouble. You must only do this and this. Everything else should fit into
it, then it is okay. If you do this and that, you will be in turmoil - it will not work. Those who tried
to teach goodness to people, they took that mode generally because society at that particular time
was in such a state of deviation, that to bring some semblance of order to the social system and
also to get people out of what they are entangled in, they just taught the opposite.
When there were people who were taught “an eye for an eye”, and a man comes and says, “If
somebody slaps you on one cheek, show him the other,” it is just to destroy the existing
entanglement that people had. If they had let him live a little longer, he would have also told them
how to slap somebody in the face when need be. Or maybe he just taught what was really needed.
The other parts they would have anyway learned.
𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐚𝐝
Every idea of goodness only breeds different levels of prejudice. Once you identify one thing as
good, another thing as bad, your perception gets completely distorted. You have no chance to
extricate yourself from that. No matter how hard you look, that is how it will seem. To destroy
this, we created yoga. That is why Shiva, the first teacher of yoga, is known as the destroyer. The
whole idea of yoga is to destroy all these things which initially look wonderful but after some
time are the basis of your entanglement.
When Shiva expounded yoga, he did it in many ways. On one level, he said it is so close. He told
Parvati, “You just sit on my lap, that’s it, that is yoga.” This looks like a man's trick to get the
woman on his lap. No, because he did not just keep her on his lap. He gave up a part of himself
and made her a part of himself. When she asked all kinds of questions, he said, “You don’t worry,
you just sit here, that’s all. Just sit on my lap, everything is taken care of.” But to somebody else
he taught elaborate methods, talking about the truth as if it is a million miles far away, how there
are a million intricate steps to be taken. The same man speaks in both ways.
𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐍𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐍𝐨 𝐀𝐝𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠
This is the most beautiful part - he is not addressing truth, he is addressing the people who are
sitting in front of him, because truth cannot and need not be addressed. This is the mistake the
world has made. They have constantly tried to address the Ultimate. They have never addressed
the people. They always tried to address God, which is their idea of the Ultimate. The moment
you address the Ultimate, you will go into all kinds of imaginary distortions.
The yogic system never addresses the Ultimate. It only addresses the people. There is no need to
do anything about the Ultimate – it is ultimate. It is the one who is right now in certain states of
limitations who needs to be addressed. If you go to a doctor, he is supposed to look at you. You
do not expect him to close his eyes and pray. That is not why you went to him. You want him to
look at your body and find out what is wrong with you.
Similarly, it is people who are going through many things. The Ultimate is not struggling. It is
individuals who are struggling. It is this individual being who is going through upheavals for
every little thing that happens. It is this individual being who needs to be addressed. Addressing
each individual being as they are right now, not addressing the Ultimate, is the essence of yogic
sciences.

Bhuta Shuddhi – The Fundamental Yogic Practice
Sadhguru: What you call as “my body” is just a manifestation of five elements – earth, water,
fire, air and akasha (space). If you know how to organize these five elements properly within
yourself, then there is nothing more to life. In terms of health, wellbeing, perception, knowing
and enlightenment, everything is handled if you know how to keep these five elements properly.
The most fundamental practice in the Yogic system, which is the basis of everything else that we
are doing, is called bhuta shuddhi. “Bhuta” refers to the pancha bhutas or the five elements.
“Shuddhi” means to cleanse that. If you learn to cleanse the five elements in the system, that is all
there is. In terms of spiritual practices, whether you do yama, niyama, pranayama, asana, dharana,
dhyana, samadhi or shoonya, essentially all of it is coming from the fundamentals of bhuta
shuddhi. All other Yogic practices are an extract from the pancha bhuta system of Yoga.
If you cleanse the elements, you will live a wonderful life. But if you are beyond that, the best
thing is to forget about living a beautiful life and just transcend life, because living a beautiful life
is a more complex situation than transcending. Transcending means to go beyond it. What is
beyond is not bothered by so many complexities of the physicality. But if you want to be in the
physical and still above it, that takes a little more mastery over the physical. If you have no
mastery over the physical, you will get enslaved to the physical. If you do a certain level of
cleansing for the elements, then you attain to what is called bhuta siddhi, which means you have
mastery over the elements. Once you have mastery over the elements, you not only have mastery
over the body and mind, but over the very creation.

Everyone has some kind of capability with the elements, otherwise you would not even live a
normal life. How well organized the five elements are in your system decides how firm, stable
and organically strong this body is. There is a whole system of practices to take charge of the five
elements within you. Some are direct, others are roundabout. Bhuta shuddhi can be practiced in a
most simplistic way or in a highly sophisticated way. Or if you do not know how to do it
yourself, someone can perform something which everyone can benefit from. There are bhuta
shuddhi rituals such as the Pancha Bhuta Kriya happening in the Dhyanalinga every month. If
you do not know how to do it, someone else will do it; you just sit there in the presence and
benefit from that.
These elements are the basis of your creation. If you have even a minor mastery over them, you
will start living in ways that other people think is magical. But there is nothing magical about it.
Right now, let us say you drink water. The water does not look like you or resemble you, but if
you drink this, it becomes you. This itself is magical. Your disease got cured; that is not a
miracle. This water becoming you is a phenomenal miracle. Once you are capable of performing
this miracle, you should be capable of many other minor things like fixing an ailment or fixing
something that you damaged – because you are creating the whole body from inside using the
four elements. Unfortunately, it is happening unconsciously. One can bring consciousness to how
these four elements are becoming the human body.
𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐃𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐄𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐍𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠?
Questioner: Why do the five elements need to be cleansed?
Sadhguru: If you pick up some water from the gutter, you may think it is impure, but it is not.
There is much more life in gutter water than the water you drink from the bottle. It is just that that
is not conducive for you. In human understanding and language, we call water as pure only if it is
conducive for us. But gutter water is very pure for many lives. With the so-called pure water, you
have killed all that life. All those other creatures think your bottled water is lifeless water, not
pure water.
Purification essentially is in the context of human beings, not in terms of the element itself.
Similarly, for many chemicals that are used as pharmaceuticals and various types of medicines,
there is an industrial version and a medical version, because what is meant for human
consumption and what is used for other purposes are different. This does not mean that the
industrial version is impure. It is just that it is not in a condition which would work best for you.
When we refer to the elements, we are speaking in the context of what is more conducive for us.
In that context, we need to purify the elements.
𝐅𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐄𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐊𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐚
The body, the world and the universe are all a play of five elements. If the elements do not
acquire other qualities or possibilities, there is no way you can create so many trillions of
manifestations with just five. They are naturally receptive in nature. Today, we know that we can
influence them. We can change the quality of the water, air and the food that we eat just with our
intention, emotion or thought process. The five elements within you which make this body are
deeply influenced by a certain gathered layer of information which is generally referred to as the
karmic substance. Without it, the elements would not behave in a particular way within you.
Every human being would have been the same if there was no specific information. What you call
as your individual self is essentially a certain volume of information and the fundamental way
that it is stuck onto you is through the elements, because there is nothing here apart from the
elements.
Cleansing the elements is about making it free of the accumulated information or the karmic
substance. If this is not done, then you will be a strong individual but you will never know how to
breach this boundary that you have set for yourself. If you cannot cross the boundary that you
have set up, that is a foolish way to live. You set up a boundary without knowing why and you
cannot cross it after some time and you start claiming, “This is how I am!” This is not how you
are. This is what you made yourself to be.
Cleansing becomes relevant when freedom and liberation become the goal of your life and you
want to extend yourself beyond these boundaries. If you want to be a concrete ball, there is no
need to cleanse at all. Concretization of karmic processes will make you rigid, and rigidity will
bring enormous amount of suffering. You do not need a calamity to happen; you are a calamity
by yourself. This is simply because the imprint is so deep that you behave in predetermined,
compulsive ways. The same situation has happened a thousand times, but the next time it
happens, you still react almost the same way. It takes a certain amount of awareness and shaking
you up to respond in a different way. Bhuta shuddhi is to do it at the most fundamental level.
𝐁𝐡𝐮𝐭𝐚 𝐒𝐡𝐮𝐝𝐝𝐡𝐢 - 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐊𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐭
If we cleanse your mind in the morning, by afternoon you will have a whole new world again. It
is really a waste. This is why no importance is given in the Yogic system towards your
psychological structure. It does not care about what you think and feel because if you change it
today, within a few hours you will change it back into something else again.
We are only interested in the body. This is why Yoga calls everything as body – physical body,
mental body, energy body – but no mind, because the psychological activity which you have
given enormous importance to is of no consequence or significance. Depending upon the type of
information imprinted within you, whatever is your karma and samskara, that is how you think
and feel. Everything happens that way. If you prune the tree, it will sprout back with vengeance
but if you handle the root, it will be gone. We are interested in handling the root and the very root
of karmic imprint is in the elements.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐃𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐬𝐡𝐚 𝐁𝐡𝐮𝐭𝐚 𝐒𝐡𝐮𝐝𝐝𝐡𝐢 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞
Bhuta shuddhi means you want to lose yourself. It does not matter whether it is good, bad, ugly
or beautiful, you want to lose everything that you have built so that the Creator’s creation will
stand up and shine within you. It will take a certain amount of work. The bhuta shuddhi that we
teach is very basic. If you want to do more serious forms of bhuta shuddhi, it is not something
that you do on the side; it becomes your entire life. But even if you do a very minor version of
bhuta shuddhi, you will see the change that happens in you is permanent. There is no tendency to
fall back, and that is important. Otherwise, everyone changes for three days and again they fall
back into the rut. That will not happen when you assist whatever else you are doing with the
bhuta shuddhi practice.
If you keep up the bhuta shuddhi practice, however small the practice is, you will see as time
progresses, its impact is undeniable. Suppose you do six months of Yogasanas and give it up for
one year; everything will be back as it was. If you do a powerful process like Shakti Chalana
Kriya, its impact will be there, but if you do not do it for a certain period of time, it will turn back
again. You do Shoonya meditation for some time and if you do not do it for a certain period of
time, it will slowly turn back. But that is not the nature of bhuta shuddhi. If you do bhuta shuddhi,
nothing seems to be happening because it is very fundamental and slow. But as long as you hold
this body, it stays with you. It will not go because it is on a very fundamental level. That is the
significance of bhuta shuddhi. If you do not hold a profession and if you do not have family
either, then we can start a more serious form of bhuta shuddhi because it will take a lot of time.
𝐀 𝐃𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐌𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐁𝐡𝐮𝐭𝐚 𝐒𝐡𝐮𝐝𝐝𝐡𝐢
Often, human beings are doing some kind of bhuta shuddhi unconsciously, unknowingly and
unintentionally. For example, there are leaders who change the atmosphere around them by their
sheer presence. There are many people – not only spiritual ones – who, when they walk into a
room, change the atmosphere there in an instant. This is a certain amount of bhuta shuddhi,
performed unconsciously. If you can do it consciously, it is far more result-oriented. There are
other aspects of energy that one can influence and thereby change the atmosphere, but this does
not impact other people as profoundly as when the elements rearrange themselves because of a
certain presence of energy and intention.
The idea of practicing bhuta shuddhi is to rearrange the way the elements function within you.
You want to change the intention with which they function within you. If the elements within you
function in the same way as they function in the earth or a tree, it is not useful to you. In the
human system, the elements function in a particular way. We want them to function that way and
to transform themselves into higher possibilities.
In fact, in every individual, the elements function in a unique manner. The traditional medical
systems in the East have always identified these individual differences. Their diagnosis is not
based on the disease or ailment that one has, but on how each individual’s system is constructed.
There is no common prescription for everyone. Unless the doctor is able to look at each
individual and identify what is needed for that particular person, the treatment does not work as
well as it should.
The treatment is according to how this particular body and human mechanism functions, and how
it is arranged within itself, not based on the symptoms of a certain ailment. In other words, in
Eastern systems, the treatment is never symptomatic, whereas the allopathic system is 100%
about symptomatic treatment. If five people have the same symptoms, all five will be given the
same medicine. But in Siddha and Ayurveda, if five people have the same symptoms, they will be
given different types of medicine because the medication is for that particular system, not for the
ailment.
These five elements coming together and producing something so complex and fantastic is a
tremendous love affair. Bhuta shuddhi should not happen like an exercise but like a love affair –
with absolute involvement. It should happen with a sense of devotion and love. Your mind,
emotions, energy and physical body – everything should be involved in this. Without this
involvement, you still may get certain physical benefits, but you will not know the full depth and
dimension of the process. If you give yourself totally to it, this simple process can change the
fundamentals of your life.
𝐀 𝐃𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐌𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐁𝐡𝐮𝐭𝐚 𝐒𝐡𝐮𝐝𝐝𝐡𝐢
The body is a play of five elements; so is the world; so is the universe. Everything is a play of
five elements. Unless you want to explore mystical dimensions, you do not have to bother about
akasha. Among the other four, seventy-two percent of the body is water, twelve percent is earth,
six percent is air, four percent is fire and the remaining is akasha. To live well, four elements are
enough; the fifth one (akasha) is not relevant for people who just want to live well.
Water is seventy-two percent of your body. It is in sync with the planet; approximately seventy-
two percent of the planet is water. That is how life has evolved. The nature of the planet has
manifested in your body in many different ways. When you eat food, you must always eat food
where the water content in the food is over seventy percent. This one thing that western societies
are ignoring and paying a huge price for. A vegetable is over seventy percent water, a fruit is over
ninety percent water. If you want cleansing to happen, you must eat fruit. If you just want to
maintain the body as it is, a vegetable does this. Almost any traditional Eastern cooking naturally
has over seventy percent water, because they were aware of this. If you drink water, it does not
work like that; the food should have over seventy percent water content.
All these four elements have memory. Particularly earth and water have a very strong sense of
memory. Today, modern science has explored this in a big way and they are proving to you that
water has tremendous memory. Much research has happened about water. Water behaves in a
certain way depending upon the type of memory it carries. This is why people are going to
consecrated spaces or temples and dying for a few drops of water, because the water has the
memory of the divine. Teerth is water which has the memory of the divine. You want that water
which has a good memory to go into you.
If you just make the waters within you sweet, you will become seventy-two percent okay. If you
do another twelve percent of earth, you are doing great with eighty-four percent. If you maintain
air, you are doing great with ninety percent. If you want to purify fire, it is much more work.
There are five dimensions of fire. There is reproductive fire, digestive fire, mental fire, heart fire
and inner fire. These five are difficult to work for ordinary people. It takes a lot of discipline, but
the three can be worked out. The reproductive, digestive and mental fires can be worked out very
easily, with little effort. The other two will take much more to work with. If you just purify these
fires, then you are no more an ordinary person. You are not just a healthy, happy person; you are
much more because once you have mastery over the fire element in you, then you are touching
the akasha. You are just one step away. Suddenly you are not just an ordinary human being,
something else is burning with you which is most people in the world do not know. Our objective
is that everyone should know it. If you took charge of the fire in your groin, the fire in your belly
and the fire in your mind, you could do many miraculous things with this life. You could live
consciously and by choice rather than be a slave of compulsiveness. This is not about denying
yourself this or that. This is just about everything happening by choice, not by compulsion.

Questioner: Namaskaram Sadhguru, I wanted to ask you about sleep. I know you have talked
about it a lot, but I wanted to see if we can get a little bit deeper into it. You mentioned that there
were some really simple things that one can do to drastically reduce their sleep quota. Even when
I do all my practices, I still feel like I need a lot more sleep than most people do.
Sadhguru: You want me to go deeper into sleep!
Questioner: Well, the science of it, yes.
Sadhguru: We must understand what sleep is. Sleep means servicing time for the body. That
means this is a time when the body gets rid of impurities. It is a maintenance and repair time for
the damage that happens to the body because of daily living – on the cellular level, on the energy
level, and in many different ways.
How much maintenance downtime you need simply depends on how much repair there is to be
done. In the course of living, how much damage do you cause to yourself – that is the question.
The damage will be maximum if there is too much friction in you. If your system is very well-
aligned and well-lubricated, there is least amount of friction and the downtime of maintenance
will naturally come down.
𝙏𝙞𝙥𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙍𝙚𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙚 𝙎𝙡𝙚𝙚𝙥 𝙌𝙪𝙤𝙩𝙖
#𝟭 𝗘𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗵 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱
Sadhguru: What are the things that you can do to bring down your sleep? The first thing is, eat
fresh food. In the Yogic culture, the simple understanding is that if you cook something, you
must consume it within a maximum of ninety minutes. After that, inertia will start setting in. If
you eat food with high inertia, the body becomes lethargic. It will need long periods of sleep
because the body needs to spend a lot of energy to counter that inertia. That means your
maintenance downtime increases because the fuel that you are putting into the system is low-
grade.
If food is cooked, in a way you have killed it. It is not live. Suppose you are dead and we keep
your body for three days, it will rot. That is so for every life. Whether it is vegetable matter or
animal flesh or many other things, the moment you take the life out of it by cooking, it begins to
rot.
There is nothing wrong with rotting because that is another form of life. Rotting means some
other life has started making this into their food. There is a whole host of life which may be
microscopic – you cannot see them but they are all having a party. If you eat that food and join
the party that the bacteria and whatever else are having, you will be in trouble. Trouble need not
necessarily mean you are immediately going to get some ailment because not all of them are
capable of infecting you with something. It is just that your energy goes down, so it causes inertia
in the body.
Think about when you go into a superstore and buy stuff. A whole lot of things there have been
there for over a month. Then you bring it and keep it in your refrigerator for another month and
have a bite whenever you feel like it. The doctors are prescribing that you must sleep for eight
hours, otherwise you will not be physically and mentally healthy because even they are eating the
same food!
#𝟮 𝗘𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲
The nature of a human being is such that while every other creature adapts to the situations it is
placed in, a human being is able to create the situations that he wants. That is what makes us
distinct. If you have any sort of concern for yourself, you have to be conscious about what goes
into your system.
If you eat that kind of food which has the least amount of complex memory in it, it will become
part of your system within two to four hours of consumption. That kind of food will lower the
sleep quota considerably. But in today’s world, it is becoming increasingly difficult to eat good
quality food because the food that you get is mostly kilograms of commerce, not really fuel for
the body. Any number of people – people who lived in Western countries, where they have been
eating this kind of food – have told me that when they come to the Isha Yoga Center, after two-
three months they start wondering, “Why am I not sleeping enough?” They believe that they must
be sleeping eight hours. But our standard is four hours. We are not just managing with four hours,
we are flourishing very well.
If there is too much chemical content and synthetic stuff, the body is not designed to digest that.
Even if one percent of the food that you consume is synthetic in nature, either in the form of
fertilizers, chemicals or preservatives, the entire digestive system becomes a struggle.
A huge amount of antacids are consumed in the United States. That means what you are putting
into the tummy is not suitable, for your tummy at least. Heartburn is not because you are in love.
Heartburn means your entire esophagus is burning up with acids or for a variety of reasons. Even
if there is less than one percent of synthetic stuff in the food that you eat, your ability to absorb
that into the system drops drastically, which also increases your sleep quota in a huge way.
Because the body is in struggle, so naturally it wants you to hibernate.
#𝟯 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗠𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝗘𝗮𝘁
How keenly you manage your energies is what decides your alertness. To meditate, alertness
should be not just of the mind but of your very energy. To assist this, for people on the Yogic
path, it is said that you should eat only twenty-four mouthfuls, and you must chew every
mouthful at least twenty-four times. This will ensure that food is pre-digested in your mouth
before it goes in, and it will not cause dullness.
If you do this during your evening meal, you will easily wake up at three-thirty in the morning. In
the Yogic system, this period is called the Brahma Muhurtam. It is an ideal time to do Yogic
practices because there is an extra support from nature at that time for your sadhana.
#𝟰 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗦𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗔𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗘𝗮𝘁
There are quite a few people who are in such a mental state that unless they load themselves with
food and make the body dull, they cannot fall asleep. If you are in a condition where you cannot
sleep unless you have a full stomach, you need to address this issue. This is not about sleep, this
is a certain mental state.
I would say 80% of the food that you eat will go waste if you fall asleep within two hours of
eating. You must give sufficient time for digestion to happen before you sleep.
#𝟱 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗽
When the body is positioned horizontally, you can immediately make out that your pulse rate
drops. The body makes this adjustment because if blood is pumped with the same force, too much
will go into your head, causing damage. The blood vessels which go upward are a finer
arrangement compared to those going down. As they go up into the brain, they become almost
hair-like, to a point that they cannot take an extra drop.
When you sleep, if you place your head towards the north and stay that way for 5 to 6 hours, the
magnetic pull of the Earth will cause pressure on your brain because iron is an important
ingredient in your blood. It is not that if you sleep this way you will fall dead. But if you do this
every day, you are asking for trouble. If you are beyond a certain age and your blood vessels are
weak, it can result in hemorrhages and paralytic strokes. If your system is sturdy, you may not
sleep very well because there is more circulation in the brain than there should be.
If you are in the northern hemisphere, East is the best direction to keep your head when you
sleep. Northeast is okay. West is alright. South, if you must. North, no. In the southern
hemisphere, don’t put your head to the south.
#𝟲 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗗𝗲𝗻𝘆 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗦𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗽
How much sleep your body needs depends on the level of physical activity you perform. There is
no need to fix the quantum of either food or sleep. When your activity levels are low, you eat
less. When they are high, you may eat more. The same goes for sleep. The moment the body is
well rested it will get up, whether at 3 AM or 8 AM. Your body should not wake up to an alarm
bell. Once it feels sufficiently rested, it must come awake.
If you forcefully deny sleep to the body, your physical and mental capabilities and whatever else
you have will drop. You should never do that. You must give the body how much sleep it needs.
But if the body is somehow trying to use the bed as a grave, it won’t want to come out. Someone
will have to raise you from the dead! It depends on how you are handling your life. If you are in a
mental state where you want to avoid life, you will naturally tend to eat and sleep more.
#𝟳 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗝𝗼𝘆𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲
Sleep means hibernation, temporary death, downtime for servicing, repairing. If you keep your
body in such a way that there is very little damage during the day, you will see the downtime for
servicing will naturally come down. This can be done by eating the right food and by keeping
your mind in a joyful state. If you keep yourself joyful, if there is no friction in your body, no
friction in your energy system because of the alignment that you have achieved, and no friction in
your mind and emotion, your sleep quota will just drop.
#𝟴 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲
The body needs rest, not sleep. In most people’s experience, sleep is the deepest form of
restfulness they know, so they talk about sleep. But essentially, the body is not asking for sleep, it
is looking for restfulness. Your mornings would be pretty bad if your nights were not restful. So
it is not sleep but restfulness that makes the difference.
If you keep your body relaxed throughout the day, if your work, exercise and every other activity
is a form of relaxation for you, your sleep quota will go down naturally. The problem is that
people have been taught to do everything hard – in tension. I see people walking very tense in the
park. This sort of exercise will bring more harm than wellbeing. Don’t go at everything like it is a
war. Whether you are walking, jogging or exercising, why don’t you do it easily, joyfully?
Don’t battle with life. Keeping yourself fit and well is not a battle. Play a game, swim, walk,
whatever you like. You will only have a problem if all you want to do is eat cheesecake!
Otherwise there is no problem about being relaxed with any activity.
#𝟵 𝗬𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 – 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶 𝗠𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗺𝘂𝗱𝗿𝗮
If you bring certain Yogic practices such as the Shambhavi Mahamudra into your life, one of the
first changes you will see is in your pulse rate. For example, someone who has just gone through
the Inner Engineering program and started Shambhavi, if he checks his pulse before and after
dinner and records it, and then practices Shambhavi twice a day for six weeks and checks his
pulse again, it would have come down by eight to fifteen counts. If one really sinks deep into
restfulness in Shambhavi, the pulse rate will go down further.
With 12 to 18 months of practice, you can bring your pulse rate down to around fifty or sixty in a
restful state. If this happens, your sleep quota will go down dramatically because the body is
generally restful through the day. Whatever activity you may be doing, it remains restful, so it
will not demand more sleep.
#𝟭𝟬 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗻𝘆𝗮 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
There is a certain meditation we teach which is called Shoonya. This is taught in a program that
we conduct only in the Isha centers in southern India and the United States. We do not teach it
elsewhere because it needs a certain atmosphere, training and other processes. Shoonya can bring
your sleep quota down dramatically. It is just a fifteen-minute meditation but you will see, if you
settle down into this meditation process properly, your metabolism will drop up to twenty-four
percent. Twenty-four percent is the deepest drop you can have in conscious states of meditation.
If you go beyond that, you will not be conscious in the usual sense. To be able to be relaxed to a
point and then to come out consciously, you cannot go beyond twenty-four percent.
You will find this fifteen minutes of meditation is equal to two to three hours of sleep in terms of
restfulness. Because there are such drastic physiological changes in the body, especially on the

Questioner: Does the amount of flexibility and the parts of the body that are flexible indicate
something about the person’s mental state, their personality, or even their karmic structure?
Sadhguru: That would be a very prejudiced way of looking at life. Let’s not get into judgments
about people around you. That somebody is not able to bend or sit on the floor could have many
reasons. It would be obnoxious and unnecessary to judge people like that. But to look at the
question of flexibility in general – a muscle is useful only if it is flexible. Wherever the body
wants 100% rigidity, it produced bones. Wherever it wants 75% rigidity, it produced tendons.
Wherever it wants 50% rigidity, it produced cartilages. Wherever it wants total flexibility, it
produced muscles. The body structure is made up of different levels of flexibility. If every part of
the body was flexible, you would sit like a bean bag.
Some parts of the body are rigid, some are semi-rigid, some are flexible – it is done in an
intelligent manner. It should be kept the way the Creator intended it to be. A three-year-old child
will be flexible enough to do any asana. You lost this flexibility because of disuse, because you
are trying to save your body for the grave. You want to be in a good shape when you go, but you
are not in a good shape when you are here. Increased acidity creates rigid muscles
If there is no injury or damage of any kind to the muscles and they still are tense and rigid, you
are probably generating acids in your body. You can notice this – if on a particular day, you are in
a mentally tense state, the next day you will find it much harder to bend. If the acid level
increases, the muscular structure tends to become rigid.
𝐄𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐲
Rigid muscles and rigid brains are no good. Only when your brain and muscles are flexible, they
are useful. If you sit here joyfully, the body will not generate acids. But if you are angry even for
five minutes, the acid level in your blood will increase dramatically, to the extent that it is
actually poisoning you, and it is this poison that makes the muscular structure rigid. Other than
that, lack of flexibility may be cultural, because you are simply not used to sitting on the floor or
using your body much. In any case, we cannot judge human beings by their flexibility in the
sense, “Tell me which asana you cannot do and I will tell you who you are.”

Questioner: What is the importance of the sequence in which we are doing the asanas? Can we
change the order?
Sadhguru: The order is not something that you or I invented – it arises from the observation of
how not only the physical body but the whole human system functions.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭
In your system, there is something called skeletal comfort, muscular comfort, organ comfort, and
energy comfort. If you sit in a reclining chair, your muscles will be comfortable, but your joints
will be strained. You may have noticed that if you travel for some time sitting reclined in a plane
or a car, by the time you reach your destination, you will be exhausted. If you sit up straight, this
will not happen.
If you sit in a recliner, only your muscles are relaxed, but there is a lot of stress on the skeletal
system, and above all, on your organs. The vital organs in the trunk are not firmly fixed with
clamps and bolts or flanges but hang in connective tissue like in nets. If you sit in a recliner,
especially in a moving vehicle, your organs will suffer enormously. In a moving vehicle, you
must always sit straight, so that your organs have greater comfort. If you lean back, one organ
will press on the other.
𝐋𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝
This is why they say you should never lie down right after food. In India, they always told you
that you must eat before or just after sunset, and leave at least four hours before you go to bed,
because the food should have left the stomach by then. If the stomach is full and you lie down, it
presses on other organs. Let’s say you have one or one-and-a-half kilogram of food in your
stomach and you lie down for a few hours, depending upon how you are lying, this weight could
cause serious damage.
𝐃𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐣𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲
In Hatha Yoga, this organ comfort is always considered. Energy comfort is also considered. Your
energy functions in such a way that if you activate one aspect of your energy without activating
another aspect of it, your system will become disjointed. There are many disjointed bodies
everywhere. Disjointed energy means living a broken life. Somehow, you may manage to live
long, but no matter what enters your life, you will not be complete. You may win the lottery, you
may get married to the best man or woman in the world, you may pray 24 hours of the day – no
matter what you do, you will live a disjointed life.
𝐀𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐥𝐲
The order of the asanas is not according to my or your preference, it is the way the human system
is made. We need to activate it from one end to the other. Sudden activation of a certain part will
lead to disjointedness. Life situations can be such that there is no choice about how to act and no
system to it – you may have to jump into action whichever way it comes. But if you have
activated your system in a certain way, whatever situation occurs in your life, you will be able to
take it without causing too much disturbance to your system. One can distinctly see this – if you
do proper classical yoga, whatever situations you face, they will not leave you scattered. This
preparation creates a certain integrity in the system. So the order of asanas is not by choice, it is
according to the way the human system is structured.

PS:
Isha’s Hatha Yoga program offers a comprehensive set of yogasanas which require no special
physical agility or previous experience of yoga. It is a very subtle process of changing the energy
in the system, which in turn straightens out physical and mental imbalances.

𝗔𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗮 𝗦𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗵𝗶
People who have taken up hatha yoga as their way of life generally take up one asana for their
life’s sadhana. This is known as Asana Siddhi. Asana Siddhi means one is able to sit in a
particular way with absolute ease. For most people, whichever way they keep their body, it is not
at ease. If you sit, it is not comfortable. If you stand, it is not comfortable. If you lie down, it is
not comfortable. What the hell to do with this? If you give your body to the process of yoga,
slowly the body becomes at ease. If you sit like this, it is absolutely at ease. It is not trying to be
some other way.
𝐀𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧
A thinking mind cannot understand how a man can spend his whole life wanting to sit in a
particular way. But everything that can be perceived can be perceived, by having mastery over a
single physical posture. What you are calling as yogasanas is just to get this body geometrically
in line with the cosmic geometry. If you learn to just hold it right, you can download the whole
cosmos. This is yoga. If you simply sit right, everything that’s worth knowing can be known to
you from within.
𝐄𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 – 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐝 𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐛 𝐨𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐠𝐚
Patanjali describes the third limb of yoga, which is the asana, as "Sthiram, Sukham Asanam" - if
you are comfortable and stable, that is all the asana is about. Because "comfort" is such a misused
word, maybe a closer word to "sukha" in English would be "ease." It simply means that your
body is at ease, your mind is at ease, and your energy is at full vibrance and balance. Now you are
naturally meditative. You will find full potential to your life.
𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐞
The reason why hatha yoga has become ugly is because people start taking it like a circus. The
way hatha yoga is happening in the West scares me, because all kinds of things are done in the
name of yoga that are not yoga. Recently, I was playing golf with a group of young people and
they asked, “What do you do?”
I just ignored the question and took my shot and kept walking.
They asked somebody who was walking with me, and he said, “He teaches yoga.”
Immediately, they ran up to me and said, “Can you teach us something that will give us six-pack
abs?”
I said, “I can give you 14 if you are interested.”
This is not about sculpting your body and showing it off. This is to make the body into a fantastic
vessel, a fabulous device to receive the Divine. Hatha yoga is a phenomenal process, but today,
many physical therapists and experts are writing books on hatha yoga, making people believe it is
an exercise system. It is not an exercise system. Studio yoga is unfortunately just the physical
aspect of it. Teaching only the physical aspect of yoga is like having a stillborn baby. If you want
a living thing, it needs to be taught in a certain way. In a proper atmosphere, with a certain sense
of humility and inclusiveness about the whole process, hatha yoga is a very fantastic process. If I
do a two-day hatha yoga program, people will burst with tears of ecstasy simply doing asanas,
and that is the way yoga needs to be done.

Sadhguru: Just spend a minute to identify at least one thing in your life that is not necessary and
kill that today. When I say “kill,” don’t start thinking about your boss, mother-in-law or neighbor.
You must kill something about you that is unnecessary for your life. Something like “I will kill
my anger” would be too general and this is not something that you can achieve by determination
– this requires consciousness.
Decide on something that you can do and that you will do. This is how to transform your life – by
taking small steps.
Identify something specific that you will be better off without, where you can take a concrete step
today – it does not matter how small it is. Choose one specific little thing that you will not do
anymore, no matter what. “I will not be angry” would be a lie, because this is not yet in your
control but it could be something like, “I will not speak angry words.”
Decide on something that you can do and that you will do. This is how to transform your life – by
taking small steps. But you should actually do it – it should not pop up again. If you kill
something, it should be dead. If you want to move towards the truth of life, your investment in
that which is not true has to be reduced. It may not all vanish immediately, but you must reduce it
step-by-step.
𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 #𝟐: 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐬 𝐪𝐮𝐨
Look at life in terms of what can be changed and do something about it. Crying about things that
you cannot change is a sure strategy to remain at status quo.
At least once a month, every full moon day, consciously look at this and identify one small thing
about yourself that you want to change. Like, “Every time before I eat, I will spend 10 seconds in
gratitude for this food which is going to become a part of me.” Or, “Every time I use anything
that is an essential element of my life, like the soil, the water, the air, and everything else around
me, I will save 1% of it.” Or, “I will see to it that I only put on my plate what I can eat.” These
small things will change your life and set you apart.

A significant thing every human being has to do is structure their psychological and emotional
framework around the most fundamental fact of their life – their mortality. Right now, it takes a
lifetime for people to understand that they are mortal; they need a heart attack or the appearance
of a malignant lump somewhere to remind them.
You are mortal and it is ticking away. So there is no time for frustration, depression, anxiety,
anger or for any unpleasantness in this life.
You need to celebrate and enjoy every moment of your life because life does not wait for you
even for a moment. If you were immortal, you could enjoy a hundred years each of depression,
anxiety, madness and misery and then on the 500th anniversary, you could become joyful. But
that is not the case. You are mortal and it is ticking away. So there is no time for frustration,
depression, anxiety, anger or for any unpleasantness in this life.
In the ashram I always tell people, no matter what work you are doing, every day you must stick
your fingers into the earth at least for an hour. This will build a natural physical memory, a bodily
memory in you that you are mortal.

Within yourself, is it more pleasant to be loving, or to be angry, hateful and jealous? Which is a
more intelligent way to exist? Loving, isn’t it? All I am saying is, please live intelligently. This is
not for someone else’s sake. It is pleasant and beautiful for you. Creating a loving world is not a
service that you do for someone else. It is an intelligent way to exist.
You can create a loving world in every single activity that you do in your life. Creating a loving
world does not mean doing something more or less. If you live your life constantly focused on
what you want, it will unquestionably happen in your immediate surroundings, and it will also
begin to happen in the larger surroundings.
𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 #𝟓: 𝐃𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞
In many ways, most people’s happiness, peace and love are mortgaged to the external situation.
So, if the stock market goes up you are happy, if the stock market goes down you are unhappy.
But the quality of life is not about what is around you. Our ability to live joyfully here does not
depend on the size of the house we live in or the car that we drive. These things make your life
comfortable and convenient but the essential quality of your life is how you are within yourself
right now.
Living joyfully and peacefully is not new to you. You were like that as a child, isn’t it? So, I am
not talking about taking you beyond, I am just talking about starting at the square one of your life.
𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 #𝟔: 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲
The difference between a fool and an intelligent person is that an intelligent person knows how
foolish he is; a fool does not. Noticing the stupidity of who you are is great intelligence. Anything
in this existence – a tree, a blade of grass, a grain of sand, one single atom – do you understand
any of these things fully? No. When this is your level of intelligence and perception, how should
you walk in the world? Gently, with a little humility, respect and love for everything around you.
If not love, then at least with awe, because you don’t understand a damn thing in this world.
If you just learn to walk like this, you will not escape a spiritual process. You don’t need any
teaching. It will happen to you anyway. This is why in the eastern cultures, always, you bow
down to whatever you see, whether it is a rock, towards the very earth that you walk upon,
towards the air that you breathe, the water that you drink, the food that you eat, the people that
you come in touch with and everything else that you use, including your body and mian animal or
a human being. Being in reverence towards the very earth that you walk upon, towards the air that
you breathe, the water that you drink, the food that you eat, the people that you come in touch
with and everything else that you use, including your body and mind, is a way of ensuring
success in every endeavor that we partake in.
𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 #𝟕: 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐚𝐝
Your inner world – if you want to call it that – should only be a reflection of what is around you.
This may be diametrically opposite to some moral theories that say the outer and the inner should
not touch each other, otherwise you would immediately get corrupted by everything around you.
That is not true. You get corrupted by what is around you only when you have opinions about
everything.
Creation is made so that you see it the way it is, not to make it the way you want to make it. This
is an obscenity that humanity is committing upon the Creator’s creation. Such a magnificent
creation – what is there for you to do? Absorb it if you can – nothing more – and even that is not
simple because creation is phenomenally multi-tiered. So many phenomena are happening right
here – one inside the other, all in one space, all in one time.
Everything that you think is past, everything that you think will be future is right here. If you see
everything the way it is, if the whole creation reflects within you, if you can contain creation the
way it is within you, you become the very source of creation. That is the way to be, inside and
outside.

PS:

𝗦𝗮𝗱𝗵𝗴𝘂𝗿𝘂 𝗼𝗻 𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀
Sadhguru: Happiness does not only come from achievement. When you were a child you were
simply happy. That is your nature. If you go against your own nature to be happy, you will never
get anywhere. To be happy is not the ultimate aspect of life. It is the fundamental aspect of life. If
you are not happy, what else can you do with your life? Only if you are happy, can other great
possibilities arise in your life.
The first and most fundamental responsibility for a human being is to become a joyous being. It
does not matter what you are pursuing in your life, whether it is business, power, education or
service, you are doing so because somewhere deep inside you is a feeling that this will bring you
happiness. Every single action that we perform on this planet springs from an aspiration to be
happy because it is the original nature. Today we are seeking happiness so vigorously that the
very life of the planet is being threatened. All those people, who depend on external situations to
be happy, will never know true joy in their lives.
The source of joy is within you; you can take charge of it. When you are fundamentally joyous,
when you do not have to do anything to be happy, then every dimension of your life – the way
you perceive and express yourself and the world – will change. You will no longer have vested
interests because whether you do something or you do not do something, whether you get
something or do not get something, whether something happens or does not happen, you will be
joyous by your nature. When you are joyous by your nature, your actions will rise to a completely
different level.
It is definitely time we look inward and see how to create personal wellbeing. From your own
experience of life you can clearly see that true wellbeing will come to you only if your interiority
changes. At present, the quality of your life is not determined by the clothes that you wear, the
educational qualifications that you carry, the family background that you come from or the bank
balances that you hold. Rather, the quality of your life depends upon how peaceful and joyous
you are within yourself.
Unless something of true value happens within you, you cannot do anything of tremendous value
to the world. Whatever you do, it is only your inner quality that you are going to spread. Whether
you like it or not, that is the reality. If you are concerned about the world, the first thing you must
do is transform yourself into a joyous being.

𝗡𝗜𝗥𝗚𝗨𝗡 – 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗜𝘀 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗼𝗺

Sadhguru: One thing I often see when people believe they are on a spiritual path is they throw around terminology to
describe aspects that are not in their experience, and consequently have misconceptions about them. “Awareness” and its
related terms are some such examples. Awareness is often mixed up with alertness, though they are not the same. Alertness
is a quality of the mind and the body. Awareness is not of the mind or the body – it is the nature of life. Most people do not
make this distinction.
The root of everything is one, but it is the basis of all complexity. No mind can ever fathom the sophistication of what we
call awareness or the being. These two are not different things. You could also call it atman or self, paramatman or the
supreme self, anda and pinda or a piece of life, brahmanda or cosmos – but these are all just words. Essentially, we try to
refer to that which defies definition. No word can describe this limitless phenomenon.
Definition needs a form, a shape, and a quality. Awareness has no quality of its own. That is why we describe it in negative
terms. We call it nirgun, which means “that which has no quality.” This is as close as you can get to a definition. The logical
mind cannot grasp that which has no quality. And since it is everywhere, you cannot battle with it either. There is a beautiful
incident in the life of the great sage Allama Prabhu, who lived in northern Karnataka and is revered as one of the pillars of
the Veera Shaiva community.
One day, a yogi named Goraksha came seeking Allama because he had heard great things about Allama and wanted to
compete with him. They say Goraksha was a little over two hundred and eighty years at that time. With very rigorous yoga,
mastering the elements within the system, he had hardened his body in such a way he defied age. Everybody he knew had
fallen dead, but he was still alive and strong like a youth. That was his pride.
Goraksha met Allama on a river bank and told him, “I’m the real yogi. If you want to test me, take your sword, hit me on the
head, and see what happens.” Allama agreed, took his sword, and smashed it on the yogi’s head. It bounced back as if it hit a
rock. Goraksha said, “This is my strength. No sword can slice me. I am practically immortal. What can you do?” Allama
laughed and said, “Well, you can also use your sword.” The yogi hesitated at first because Allama did not look strong or
rock-like, but Allama encouraged him to go ahead. Goraksha took the sword and hit Allama’s head with full force. The
sword went straight through Allama’s body, as if through air. Goraksha lost his balance and fell. He asked, “What is this?”
Allama said, “This is not this or that. This is Shiva.”
When something is neither this nor that, it has no qualities. This is Shiva – “that which is not.” This is the nature of
awareness – it has no quality of its own, no resistance, nothing. This is also the nature of life and that which is the source of
life. But if at all people have any experience of awareness, it is mostly through the filters of their minds. There is no mind
without quality. At the most, you can calm the mind in such a way that it becomes mirror-like, without attributes, for a
period of time. The mind cannot function without attributes and information. If you bring the mind to a certain level of
calmness, you touch the dimension that we call awareness. We can also call it life, the source of life, the Divine, nirgun, or
atman – it is all the same.
For most people, awareness is heavily blurred by the mind, because awareness reflects through the mind. If the mind is still
for some time, awareness will be clear. But a bit of activity, thoughts, and emotions, and immediately, awareness will be
tainted. The very fact that you are awake and you read this now means you are aware. Trying to understand the language, the
importance, and the meaning behind it – all this comes from the mind. The mind cannot exist without outside input and
support.
If you go by the nature of your mind, whose content is largely based on social input, you will automatically seek bondage.
You want to bond with people and hold on to things you come in contact with. By contrast, the nature of awareness is
freedom. When the mind becomes absolutely still, you become free. Right now, awareness or the source of life is stuck to
your body because of karmic glue. If you dissolve the karmic glue, which could happen if your meditation becomes very
deep, you could leave the body. That is why I make sure no one gets enlightened right here. Not because I am avoiding
competition. The problem is you may rise in awareness, but you cannot rise in knowing and wisdom that easily.
If you do not create any obstructions, you can easily rise in awareness, beyond the limitations of your psychological and
physiological framework, because that is its nature. Right now, you are holding it down with so many obstructions. For
awareness to rise and at the same time to keep your physiological structure and the psychological framework intact, you need
to understand the nuts and bolts of how it is all made. This is a learning process that will take time.
Awareness never has a quality of its own. Only because you perceive everything through the tinted glass of your mind, it
looks like there are different kinds of awareness, while it actually is one. The air around you, the life within you, and what is
spreading across the cosmos are essentially of the same quality, or rather, beyond quality – nirgun.

𝗘𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿: 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵!

Sadhguru: How audacious that we can even think we can allot a day for the earth! Both day and
night happen only because the earth revolves. Our very body is an extract from this planet. For
human beings who have forgotten that they have just temporarily come out of the womb of this
earth and one day will be sucked back into this earth, this day is a reminder that you are a part of
this earth. If humanity has to live for a long time, you have to think and act like the earth and be
the earth because that is what you are.
This is the first time in humanity’s history that we have to talk about protecting this planet which
has nourished thousands of generations of human beings. None of them ever thought a day would
come when we have to take care of the planet. We are like an infant talking about saving the
mother. But that’s the reality.
My interest is not ecology, my interest is life. The preservation and nurturing of this planet is not
different from aspiring for a good life for ourselves, because there is no good life without a good
planet. The very body that we carry is just an outcrop of this planet. However, our ideas of
development and economy have taken us away from this reality. It is time that we realize that the
fanciful ideas we have about life, economy, and the world do not work anymore. We have to do
something more mature to make this work. This maturity needs to arise in the business, industry,
government, and whoever else is involved in managing or destroying the planet. This has to
happen.
Right now we are looking at ecological concerns as an obligation to fulfill. It is not an obligation,
it is our life. Somewhere we believe only we are life, and everything else is not life. This is
happening because the whole experience of life is limited to the physical sensations of life. What
one thinks is life is just his body, so he thinks only he is life, and the rest is not. If you are
spiritually aware, then you would naturally know that everything is life. No one would have to
tell you to protect the ecology. People are talking about ecological awareness today not because
of overwhelming love for other creatures, but because they have begun to realize, “My life is
under threat right now. If this continues, I will not live and my children will not live. We have to
do something about it.” Someone has reminded you that your survival is under threat. This is a
very unfortunate way of caring for other life around us.
Our lives are not separate from each other; our life is an integrated, connected life. How healthy
the worms are today will determine how healthy we are tomorrow. Spirituality essentially means
an all-inclusive experience. When there is an all-inclusive experience, being concerned and
caring about everything around you is very natural because anyone who looks into himself,
anyone who turns inward, naturally realizes that his existence and the outside existence are not
different.
Today, we have the necessary technology, resource and capability to address every fundamental
issue on the planet. Never before in the history of humanity have human beings been as capable
as we are today. The only thing missing is inclusive consciousness.
In our lives, if we do not do what we cannot do, there is no problem. But if we do not do what we
can do, we are a disaster. It is my wish that we as a generation do not become a disaster in every
sense.

𝗨𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘂𝗹𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀?

Question: Sadhguru, I am not happy with the fact that compulsions have been popping up as I am
doing my sadhana.
Sadhguru: You must learn to be happy with your compulsions. Anyway you have the
compulsion. If you are not happy with it, now you have two problems - compulsion and
unhappiness! Already you have one problem, don’t create the next one. At least if you have one
problem, it is easier to deal with it.
Unhappiness is unpleasantness. Why we are always talking about joy and love is to keep your
mind and emotions pleasant. When these are pleasant, you are flexible and we can do many
things with you. When your mind and your emotions are unpleasant, you become rigid; nothing
can be done about you. If you are in a state of pleasantness, you are willing to be molded into a
different shape. When you are in a state of unpleasantness, you are not even willing to be
touched.
𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗔𝘁 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘂𝗹𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗝𝗼𝘆𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆
Unhappiness is a bigger problem than whatever compulsions you have. It is a far bigger problem
because now you cannot be touched, molded or helped. Whatever nonsense you are, the first
thing is to learn to be joyful and loving. You have your compulsions - just learn to look at them
joyfully. Then it will be easy to work with you, help you, reach out to you - to do things with you
beyond your likes and dislikes. Your likes and dislikes are the most basic compulsions; if we
have to help you out of these, you have to be in a pleasant state. If you are in an unpleasant state,
we cannot make you do something that you do not like; you will do only what you like. The more
unhappy people are, the more they will insist, “I will do only this. This is how I am!” Joyful
people are flexible - you can make them dance, you can make them cry, you can make them
jump, you can make them do funny things, you can ask them to crawl around; they will do
everything when they are happy. They are flexible.
Don’t lose your flexibility. That is most important. Flexibility is not possible when you are in any
state of unpleasantness, either in the mind or in the emotion. Being joyful, loving and peaceful is
important only for this reason - because you have many compulsions.
𝗞𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗮 𝗣𝗼𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗲𝘀
Karma is like a sack of potatoes. The deeper you bury these compulsions, the more they will
grow. Sadhana is to pull them out and dry them in such a way that they cannot grow again. If you
put yourself through a period of intense sadhana, you will see that when you go out in the world,
so many of your simple compulsions are gone. But still there are a lot of potatoes to pull out.
Every day you need to pull them out and dry them to such a point where they cannot sprout again.
If the same potato grows into a million, that is an exaggerated potato. Let us say you have five
minutes of intense experience - of pain, fear, some torturous experience or something which was
abhorrent to you. In these five minutes of potatoes, they will multiply and multiply and rule your
whole life. Wherever you go, that is what you will talk about, what you think about. You buried
them and they are multiplying. They will become millions of potatoes of the same abhorrent kind.
Now if you dry this potato and keep it there, it is a good experience. Even if you went through a
really bad experience, it is a good experience because what you learn through unpleasant
moments in your life is invaluable. Only a fool will try to forget. If you are smart, you must
always remember every unpleasant experience you have had - without resentment or anger - so
that you never ever get into the same situations again.

Question: Namaskaram. During the practice of kriyas, there is always this challenge of thoughts
entering my mind. I’m trying hard to keep them away and focus on the kriya, but this doesn’t
really work. How to control your thoughts during meditation or kriyas?
Sadhguru: You are focusing hard and trying to banish the thoughts, and they are not going away.
This is the nature of the mind, but it looks like you are very prejudiced against your mind. When
you are doing your kriya or your meditation, you don’t mind if your kidneys or your lungs are
functioning or if your heart is beating. You don’t mind all the other processes in the body – only
your brain should not function! The notion that if you do something spiritual, your brain should
stop working is simply wrong.
Your thoughts are just the smells – either fragrance or stink – of the stuff that you carry within
you. Nothing new arises. If you don’t let the stuff that you have gathered go into your brain, your
brain will work in phenomenal ways. It can do things that you have not imagined possible. But it
is full of your own rubbish right now – that is the struggle; that is why you want it to stop. Instead
of the brain being the crown of your life, it has become the garbage bin of your life. Physically, it
is the crown. In the symbolism of yoga, Sahasrar is a lotus with one thousand petals – “one
thousand” not as a literal number, but as something innumerable. If your brain was rooted in the
existential process, innumerable possibilities would open up. But right now, your brain is only
rooted in the mental process.
Now you may say, “Sadhguru, that’s exactly what I am saying – how to control thoughts?” No,
that is not what you are saying. You don’t want your thoughts to interfere with your illusory idea
of enlightenment. Illusory because enlightenment is not something that you cause. You don’t
cause light, but you see light. When the sun rises in the morning, you do not cause the light, but
you are able to see it if your eyes are open. If you cause light – let’s say with a torch or by any
other means – you always have to keep it up, and there will always be the fear that it will go out.
The difference between education and enlightenment is just this – you can educate yourself with
1, 10, or 1000 books, but still you will run out of material at some point. Enlightenment means
you did not educate yourself with books – you are simply there; it is an endless process. Is there
something particular that an enlightened person knows that you do not know? No. Is there
something particular that an enlightened person does not know? No. I am not playing with words.
This is the nature of existence.

What is happening in your liver and kidneys is a lot more complex than the thoughts that you
generate. If the activity of your organs does not disturb you, why do your thoughts disturb you?
Because you think you are your thoughts. When you think, you don’t see it as “my thoughts” –
you say, “I think so.” Because you are deeply identified with your thought process, it is bothering
you. You are not identified with your kidneys unless you have a kidney problem. If they function
normally, most people do not even feel if they have kidneys or not. Kidneys are a device – they
are functioning so efficiently we can forget about them.
You are always conscious of that which does not function efficiently. You know, I am making a
statement about your brain. If it was functioning smoothly, you would not notice your brain, like
you do not notice your kidneys or liver. If you were not identified with it, you would not notice it.
If you are identified with it, it is a big deal. You are not your thought. You are identified with
something that you are not. Once you are identified with something that you are not, you cannot
stop the mental process – it will just go on endlessly. It is like when you have eaten bad food, gas
will develop. You cannot stop it with a wine cork. You just have to stop eating bad food.
The bad food for you is right now, you believe yourself to be things that you are not. The moment
you identify yourself with your body, your thoughts, your emotions, and many other things
around you, the thought process will be endless. People think that is how the mind is. That is not
how mind is, or rather, that it is not how it is supposed to be. If you constantly had a stomach
ache, you would think that is how the stomach is.

The brain is much more sensitive than other organs. All other organs have specific functions, but
the brain has a few specific functions, and the rest is left open. This is the problem of being
human. Any other creature has specific goals, nothing more. They must eat well, grow well,
reproduce well, and die one day – everything is set. Only a human being is wondering, “Why am
I here? What is the nature of my life? Where do I come from? Where do I go?” All these
questions only come up when you are human. The difference between a human being and any
other creature is that in human beings, the cerebral cortex and other parts of the brain have
flowered.
You complain about a new possibility that has arisen within you, a possibility that an ape, a
monkey, or any other creature does not have. Do not treat a possibility as a problem. It is not a
problem – it is a possibility that you can sit here and think of something that is 1000 miles away,
1000 years ago, 1000 years later, or whatever else. It has become a problem for a lot of people
because they have never looked at the user manual.
First stop giving the brain bad food – feed it with Truth, not untruth. We are in the hands of
Truth. We don’t have Truth in our hands. We have a complex bunch of lies in our hands. If you
keep down all the things that you believe, all the things that you have made up, you will see, if
you sit here, your mind could be simply empty. If it is empty, what is the use? The use is it can
reflect the whole cosmos. Otherwise, it is quite comic. This is the choice – you can make your
mind into a comical place or a cosmic space. For it to become a cosmic space, you must keep all
the lies down – then Truth will flourish by its own nature. The absence of falsehood is Truth.
Only a fool will talk about what Truth is. One who knows will only talk around it, because you
cannot talk about it. You can only define and describe that which has some kind of substance, that
which has measurable parameters, or boundaries. If something has no boundaries and no
parameters, you cannot talk about it. The whole work is about clearing the mess you have created,
not about establishing Truth. There is no need to establish Truth. It is in the lap of Truth that all
of us exist.
I will not ask you to confess what thoughts you are getting while doing your kriya. Do not be
concerned about your thoughts. Above all, do not try to stop them. Let them happen like the
activity of your kidneys is happening. Not everything in your kidneys is clean. Not everything in
your brain is clean either – what is your problem?

Do not discriminate between good and bad thoughts. There are no good and bad thoughts – there
are just thoughts. Your thoughts depend upon what kind of garbage you have – that kind of smell
will emanate. Today’s smell depends on yesterday’s garbage. It depends on what you threw into
the bin. If you watched a movie yesterday or something else happened, today, that will come back
to you again. Do not judge your thoughts – it is just rubbish. First of all, they are not even real. A
thought means that it is not real. The largest part of who you are is unconscious right now. You
are making things up all the time. If you want to know the nature of creation and the Creator, it is
important that you do not make things up, which is what you are trying to do right now. Trying to
make things up is a hopeless method.
If you try to maintain a continuous stream of thoughts while doing your kriya, suddenly, they will
not come. Suddenly, you will get constipated in the head. Do not bother about your thoughts or
about how to control your thoughts. Depending upon what is there inside today, thoughts will
flow. There is no significance or consequence to this. You just need to do the kriya – do not do
the thoughts. Whether you try to remove them or to have continuous thoughts or 108 sacred
thoughts during meditation, you are still trying to do the thoughts. The kidneys will do their own
thing; the liver will do its own thing; the brain will do its own thing; you do the kriya – that is all.
