World renowned nose

1. Why was the man dismissed?

Answer: The man became an object of curiosity because of his long nose. Due to
which people, photographers and reporters started visiting him every time. The
people for whom he was working as a cook could not find peace due to this
continuous disturbance, hence he was dismissed from service.

2. How did the man’s decision to keep visitors out of his hut have a
fortunate result?

Answer: As the man lost his job, he was left with no money and was starving in his
hut. Even then, people from distant lands came to see him. They looked at his nose
with surprise and even touched it out of curiosity, however none asked him for food
or about his deteriorating health. One day he got frustrated and asked his mother to
keep the visitors out of his hut. However, as the visitors were quite curious to have a
look at his long nose, they started bribing the mother to see her son ‘s nose. This
became a regular practice with both mother and son and resulted in their fortune.

3. How did the Government try to capture the long-nosed man?

Answer: Government tried a confidence trick; they awarded him the title 'Chief
among the long-nosed ones' and gave him a gold medal. The President himself tied
the medal around his neck and instead of shaking hands, the President tweaked the
tip of the long nose which was filmed by a newsreel cameraman and shown in all
theatres.

4. Question 4: How was confusion caused in the minds of the people?

Answer: The members of the opposition political party approached one of the
secretaries of Long-nose and convinced her to issue a scathing statement that Long-
nose is not real but made of rubber and he the Long-nose has deceived the people.
This news spread like wildfire through all the newspapers. People went against
Long-nose.
To answer this protest, the ruling party approached the other secretary of Long-
nose and convinced her to issue a counter statement that the statement given by the
opposition party is a lie and I being the loyal secretary of Long-nose support the fact
that his nose is real and not made of rubber.
Both these contradicting statements created confusions in the minds of the people.

5. "Six poets wrote epic poems.........and won wealth and acclaim.”


“Explain the use of irony in this text
Answer: Irony is the use of speech or writing express something other than and
especially the opposite of the literal meaning. 
This is an example of irony. Poets and writers have written poems and biographies of a
man who was perceived to have no sign of intelligence or even a basic understanding of
common sense. The only reason they would even be writing about his life would be his
nose. After his nose received international recognition, many writers would have
wanted a piece of that pie. So, they wrote about the long nosed one mentioning noble
quality which were thought to be lacking in the man just to gain fame and success. It
can also be assumed that most of the information given in the biographies would be
fabricated, as the man had no interesting or different life. This was just a game of self-
interest of political parties’ media and particular self-interest of people 

6. How did the doctors prove that the nose was genuine?
Answer: Expert doctors from 48 countries were invited by the President to examine Long-
nose in the presence of the President and cabinet ministers. One doctor blocked the
nostrils of the long-nosed one, he immediately opened his mouth wide. Another doctor
took a needle and punctured the tip of his nose and a drop of blood appeared at the Up of
his nose. At the end the doctors gave their unanimous verdict that the nose is genuine.

Answer: The narrator here is referring to the significance of twenty-fourth year a person's
life. He supports his statement by saying that, if we look through the recorded pages of
world history, we can find that the twenty-fourth year had a significance in many great
lives. This is what students of history need not be told.
(b) How does the life of the main character of the story change?
Answer: The main character of the story, who is a simple cook and has his life confined to
limited activities of a kitchen in the initial part of the story, later became a person great
interest and curiosity. The same cook who was dismissed from service and was starving
without food in his lowly hut, became a person of political interest and became a
millionaire in six years. He acted thrice in films, six poets wrote epic poems about the
noble qualities of long-nosed one, nine well known writers wrote biographies on him and
he won wealth and acclaim. Now, the place where he lived was no longer a lowly hut,
however a guest house which was open to all and anyone could get a meal anytime over
there.

Answer: No, nobody came to explain this to him. He himself felt and got convinced of this
fact
(b) How did the publicity change his life initially?
Answer: Initially, he was a simple cook, and his life was confined to limited activities of a
kitchen, who later became of a person great interest and curiosity. The same cook who
was dismissed from service and was starving without food in his lowly hut, became a
person of political interest and became a millionaire in six years. He acted thrice in films,
six poets wrote epic poems about the noble qualities of long nosed one, nine well known
writers wrote biographies on him and he won wealth and acclaim. Now, the place where
he lived was no longer a lowly hut, however a guest house which was open to all and

(c) How did it change his life in the long run?
Answer: In the long run, his life became messy. Conspiracies were hatched to capture him.
Political games were played by the government to get his support, whereas the opposition
party tried to malign his image with lies and tagging him as a cheater. During this episode
the people went against him and he was even arrested and taken away.

As this shouting and revelry ended, the President thought of another gimmick.
(a) What is a gimmick?
Answer: Gimmick is a trick intended to attract attention, publicity, or trade.
(b) What was the first gimmick that President tried?
Answer: Government tried a confidence trick; they awarded him the title 'Chief among the
long-nosed ones' and gave him a gold medal. The President himself tied the medal around

(c) Did the members of the press try any gimmicks? Why?
Answer: Yes, the press did try their gimmicks. They asked the long-nosed one to give his
opinion on important world events. Newspapers started publishing his comments. They
did this to get the attention and publicity for their newspaper. Long-nose became a public
figure and people loved him. His long nose reaching down to the navel was considered a
sign of greatness. If he said nothing about an event, that was considered as an
unimportant one.
