CHAPTER 4-LINEAR EQUATIONS IN TWO VARIABLES

LEVEL-1

1. A salesperson makes a base salary of $10,000 a year plus a 5% commission on the

total sales for the year. Write a linear equation in two variables for his yearly
salary, where y represents the yearly salary and x represents the total yearly sales.
2. Find the value of k, if line represented by the equation 2x − ky = 9 passes through
the point(−1,−1).

3. Write the coordinates of any two points which lie on the line x + y = 8 . How
many such point exists?
4. The graph of the linear equation 3x + 5y =15 cuts the x-axis at the point

5. If the point ( 4, -2 ) lies on the graph of 2x = ay + 3 , then find the value of a

6. A three-wheeler scooter charges Rs. 10 for the first km and Rs. 4.50 each for every
subsequent km. For a distance of x km, an amount of Rs. Y is paid. Write the linear
equation representing the above information.

LEVEL-2

7. Draw the graph of the equation 2x + 3y = 6 . From the graph find the value of x,
when y = 4.

8. Draw the graph of the equation 2y −3x + 4 = 0 . From the graph, verify that
x= y = −5 is one of the solutions of the given equation.

9. “Six years from now the sum of the ages of Tom and Joann will be 79.” Write a
linear equation for the above and draw its graph.

10.“If the cost of 5 tables exceeds the cost of eight chairs by Rs. 150”, write a linear
equation in two variables to represent the statement and draw its graph. Also find
the cost of one table if cost of one chair is Rs.240.
LEVEL-3
11.Draw the graphs of the equations y = x and y = –x in the same graph paper. Find
the coordinates of the point where two lines intersect.
12.Draw the graphs of the equations 3x – 2y + 6 = 0 and x + 2y – 6 = 0 in the same
graph paper. Find the area of triangle formed by the two lines and x – axis.
13.The food charges in a hostel are as follows ,for the first day ,the charges are Rs
100 and for the subsequent days it is Rs 50 per day, taking the number of days
as x and the total charges as Rs y. Write a linear equation of this information
and draw its graph.
14.Draw the graph of the linear equation x + 2y = 8 and find the point on the
graph where abscissa is twice the value of ordinate
