Citratus Extract Air Freshener and Fly Repellent

RESEARCH PLAN

Rationale

Fannia Canicularis adults are diurnally active and widely dispersed on poultry ranches

during the day (Anderson and Poorbaugh 1964). Adult flies can disperse to nearby residential

homes where they can pose a nuisance to homeowners(Meyer et al. 1987, Meyer 1993). Fannia

Canicularis often enter homes and/or form mating swarms in areas protected from wind/direct

sunlight, such as beneath trees and shade structures, or in covered porch areas (Zeil 1986,

Rozkosny et al. 1997). Females aggregate on walls and ceilings within poultry houses as well as

in trees and shrubs outdoor (Lewallen 1954, Anderson and Poorbaugh 1964).

Since cinnamon contains strong compounds that makes it an extremely potent air freshener

that can deter flies from getting close to the area of scent (pesky little critters, 2021). Also flies

are petrified to the odor of lemongrass because citronella contains citral and geraniol that will

keep the flies away (atalian, 2019). This can help people with managing with flies, Since flies

can carry a lot of diseases. To manage the fly problem, people buy commercial fly repellents

which can cost a lot. So this can really help people repel flies while have saving money.
Research Objectives/ Hypothesis/ Expected outcomes

1. Research Objectives

This study aims to find out the Potential of Cinnamon Cinnamomum Zeylanicum Powder and

Lemongrass Cymbopogon Citratus Extract as an Air Freshener and Fly Repellent. Specifically

this study will:

1.1 determine the significant difference in the effect of Cinnamon Cinnamomum

Zeylanicum Powder and Lemongrass Cymbopogon Citratus Extract at different

levels of concentration on house flies Fannia Canicularis.

1.2 Compare the significant difference in the efficacy of treatments between Cinnamon

Cinnamomum Zeylanicum Powder and Lemongrass Cymbopogon Citratus Extract

and commercial fly repellent.

2. Hypothesis

The following hypothesis will be put forward:

2.1 There will be no significant difference in the effect of Cinnamon Cinnamomum

Zeylanicum Powder and Lemongrass Cymbopogon Citratus Extract at different levels of

concentration on house flies Fannia Canicularis

2.2 There will be no significant difference in the efficacy of treatments between Cinnamon

Cinnamomum Zeylanicum Powder and Lemongrass Cymbopogon Citratus Extract and

commercial fly repellent.

3. Expected Outcomes

The study will expect that:

 3.1 Cinnamon Cinnamomum Zeylanicum Powder and Lemongrass Cymbopogon Citratus

Extract will repel house flies at different levels of concentration.

3.2 Cinnamon Cinnamomum Zeylanicum Powder and Lemongrass Cymbopogon Citratus

Extract will be as effective as the commercial fly repellent.

Description in Detail of Methods and Procedure

1. Preparation of Research Equipment

(1) L distilled water, electric blender, (4)spray bottles, (20)lemongrass leaves, (4)cups of

Cinnamon powder and gloves. Other materials such as beakers, funnels, stirring rod and knife

will be obtained from the Physics/Chemical Laboratory of Antique National School.

2. Collection and Extraction of Lemongrass Cymbopogon Citratus

The Lemongrass Cymbopogon Citratus will be collected in a garden in San Jose, Antique. It

will be extracted by putting ½ cup of distilled water and Lemongrass Cymbopogon Citratus in

the electric blender and blend it.

3. Steps on Making the Cinnamon Cinnamomum Zeylanicum Powder and Lemongrass

Cymbopogon Citratus Extract Fly Repellent

The Lemongrass Cymbopogon Citratus Extract will be mixed with Cinnamon Cinnamomum

Zeylanicum Powder using the blender. After mixing it will be put in a spray bottle.

4. Treatment Preparation

There will be 6 Treatments and 3 replicates, 1 Treatment for every Fly infested area. The

Cinnamon Cinnamomum Zeylanicum Powder and Lemongrass Cymbopogon Citratus Extract

will be sprayed in a Fly infested area. The result of the extract will be monitored, noted and will
be compared to other concentrations to see if on which is will be the most effective treatment

closest to the commercial fly repellent.

There will be six (6) treatments with three (3) replicates for each treatment. The six (6)

treatments will be used in the study are as follows:

 Treatment A-25% extract

=25mL of Cinnamon Cinnamomum Zeylanicum Powder and Lemongrass

Cymbopogon Citratus Extract + 75mL distilled water

 Treatment B-50% extract

=50mL of Cinnamon Cinnamomum Zeylanicum Powder and Lemongrass

Cymbopogon Citratus Extract + 50mL distilled water

 Treatment C-75% extract

=75mL of Cinnamon Cinnamomum Zeylanicum Powder and Lemongrass

Cymbopogon Citratus Extract + 25mL distilled water

 Treatment D-100% extract

=100mL of Cinnamon Cinnamomum Zeylanicum Powder and Lemongrass

Cymbopogon Citratus Extract

 Treatment E (Positive Control)

=Commercial Fly Repellant

 Treatment F (Negative Control

=No treatment
Ways Of Proper Disposal

The left over residues will be put in a garbage bag and will be disposed

immediately and the equipment and materials will be cleaned and sterilized.

Risk and Safety

The primary responsibility for proper hazard evaluations and risk assessments lies

within the person who will perform the experiment. That being said, the responsibility

will also be shared by the laboratory supervisor. The supervisor will be responsible for

ensuring that everyone involved in an experiment and those nearby understand the

evaluations and assessments. As part of a culture of safety, all of these groups will

work cooperatively to create a safe environment and to ensure that hazards will be

appropriately identified and assessed prior to beginning work.
