Science 9A/B
Unit Rationale
This unit will be the second unit of Science 9, with a nature of science emphasis. It will explore the
properties of various materials, and what happens to them during chemical change? It will also build on
discovering what evidence we have of a chemical change occurring, and explaining the ideas, theories
or models that can help us prove that evidence?
This unit will have a variety of formative assessments to help students with key concepts from class,
review vocabulary, apply their knowledge, and seek help.
Summary sheets for various topics will be printed as an extra resource for students to work on when
time is available in class, or for studying.
There will be (X) summative assignments that are unique in their own way. They allow the students to
apply the knowledge they have learned from class and formative assessments by completing
worksheets, reviews, case studies, or simulations.
There will be 2 quizzes throughout the unit. The first quiz will be about what was learned in the first
section including ____. The second quiz will cover_____ section. The unit exam will then cover all of
the material in the unit.
General Outcomes
Skill
Ask questions about the relationships between and among observable variables, and plan
investigations to address those questions
Conduct investigations into the relationships between and among observations, and gather and record
qualitative and quantitative data
Analyze qualitative and quantitative data, and develop and assess possible explanations
Work collaboratively on problems; and use appropriate language and formats to communicate ideas,
procedures and results
Focusing Questions
➔ What are the properties of materials, and what happens to them during chemical change?
➔ What evidence do we have of chemical change; and what ideas, theories or models help us
explain that evidence?
Unit Summary
In this unit, students are introduced to the formal study of chemical substances through laboratory
investigations and introductory studies of chemical theory. In the laboratory, students observe and
compare chemical substances and, with guidance on safety, investigate the properties of materials and
the ways they interact. In conjunction with these studies, students are introduced to ideas about
elements and compounds, and corresponding structural ideas about atoms and molecules. Theoretical
ideas are introduced as means for explaining, interpreting and extending their laboratory findings; these
ideas include a general introduction to the periodic table, chemical nomenclature and simplified ways of
representing chemical reactions.
Group work
Accommodations/Modifications to Assessment
Will include instruction, discussion based learning, personalized research on topics, creative
expression, videos, and group work.
Students may be given more time and more guided instruction when doing things such as lab
questions, punnett squares, etc.
Students may need personalized guided instruction to understand certain tasks and complete
assignments.
Gifted students can receive extra resources and worksheets that have more difficult questions,
assignments, and objectives
Students may have extended time limits for assignments if they are struggling working at an acceptable
pace
Modifications to add or subtract certain questions on the formative assessment activities based on
class focus and understanding.
Students who are struggling will get modified formative assignments, summative assessments, and
modified tests with readers if needed.
