June 12, 1956 Roman Catholic Church Fr. Jesus Cavanna

Domocao Alonto Mariano Jesus Cuenco May 12, 1956

Sen.Claro M. Recto RA 1425 Archbishop Rufino
Santos
Noli Me Tangere Antonio Morga The Board of National
Education

RA 14251. It mandates the inclusion of Rizal’s life and writings in the curriculum of
educational institutions.
Roman Catholic Church 2. This institution led the opposition of the Rizal Law.
Noli Me Tangere 3. It is one of Rizal’s novels which exposed the abuses of the
Spanish friars during his days.
June 12, 1956 4. It is the date of enactment of the Rizal Law.
May 12, 1956 5. The date in which the bill emphasized that only college students
would have the option of reading unexpurgated versions of contested reading
materials.

his writings became a Bible of Indonesian in quest of their independence.
Fr. Jesus Cavanna 7. He claimed that Rizal's works in view of the past injustices
would corrupt the present setup of Catholic churches in the

Sen. Claro M. Recto 10. He is a senator and is the main proponent of the Rizal bill.
Let’s Analyze
Activity 1. Based on what you have learned, elucidate the following questions:
(Your answers will be graded on the basis of the rubric provided.)
1. Is R.A. 1425 considered a victory for the Catholic Church? Why or why not?
Absolutely not, in fact, this bill proposed by the sen. Recto are being opposed
by the Catholic church because of its contents. Accordingly, Rizal’s law
indicates that all public and private school shall take a subject about the life,
works and writings of Dr. Jose Rizal. Furthermore, the church doesn’t like the
idea because primarily the novels of Rizal makes the church dirty and making
them unbelievable to their believers. It’s clearly a loss for them because it is
being enacted in June 12, 1956 and until now it is being practiced.

2. Rizal’s life, works, and writings particularly his novels, Noli Me Tangere and El
Filibusterismo, shall be included in the curricula of all schools, colleges, and
universities, public or private, as long as they are original or unexpurgated editions
of these novels. Explain this.
For me, this statement should be enacted as a way of spreading knowledge
about history when Rizal tries to make us realize on how cruel those past
priest. In my case, I am ager to know more about those events because I think
those previous novels of Rizal which is Noli and El Fili are lacking on details
because I think it is censored for those brutal events that Rizal witnessed. We
have the right to know about all of this, it may ruin the image of the Roman
Catholic Church but the past is just a past, we can try to not make it happen
again.

3. If the Rizal Bill had not existed before and it was proposed today, would there
be objections to it? Why or why not?
I think there is a opposition particularly the current Roman Catholic Church
that is being targeted by Rizal’s novel for their bad deeds. They will always
contradict to these law even if it is not proposed in the past because they will
try to maintain the good image of the church. To add up, I think even if it is
proposed now and not in the past and it is being opposed be the church it
would still win against them because there are a lot of eager Filipinos who
wants to know the past, the life of Rizal and the bravery and patriotism of Rizal
as he fights the Spaniards and abusive Priest with his pen and paper.

Let’s Analyze
Activity 1. Answer the following questions on the spaces provided below.
1. How was Dr. Rizal’s personality developed in relation to his own childhood and
adolescent experiences?
Rizal’s childhood affects his very own personality in a unique way. As we all
know, Rizal’s childhood is a bit complicated compared to everyone’s
childhood. He is shaped by the different events that has happened in his life
prior to the deaths of his siblings as well the problem he encounters because
of being a filipino citizen. He achieved strong will and a brave heart to face the
reality and the wrong doings of higher ups during his times.
2. If given the chance that you were Jose Rizal, would you still choose the peaceful
campaign in attaining our country’s independence or would you settle for a bloody
revolution? Why or Why not?
If I were Dr. Jose Rizal and I were to fight the independence of our country, I
would use my knowledge to achieve such goals in both ways. I would use
every ounce of my knowledge to plan an action in which it contradicts the
wrong doings of Spaniards. I will gather some men and plan an all out attack
of a very good strategic plan in order to obliterate the Spaniards and at the
same time lessen the casualties of men. I will also remain as a writer and
writes novels or scriptures against Spanish colonizers, but the difference is I
am the leader of a secret force to punish those bastards.

Let’s Analyze
1. Did the industrialization bring economic progress to the local inhabitants of the
island?
For me, it may vary from one individual to another. As what I have perceived
on our current situation, industrialization may take place from time to time and
it affects huge amount of people. Others may say it bring progress in every
aspect of a certain community because they have directly affected by it and
they have the proper stance on the progressing society. On the other hand,
those unfortunate ones have suffered directly due to industrialization
especially those farmers because they have nothing left to farm due to
continuous building of huge infrastructure and factories
2. Among the challenges during the Spanish period what do you think are the
challenges that still Filipino face up to the present? Cite examples.
We are still inclined in foreign products and services. Another example is
discrimination, which is very rampant in our society. To add up, the worst is
the abuse of power, for example corruption and abuse to human rights.
3. If you were present during the 19th century what reforms would you seek that
would address the political structure and the challenges in the 19th century
Philippines?
I would probably, suggest a federal type of government just like the
government of USA. We can reflect from them, admit it, we are still lacking
knowledge and power that’s why we primarily rely on other powerful countries.
We shall depend on them and learn from them but not to the extent that they
would abuse their seniority to us. In order for a certain nation to progress, it
must undergo certain changes and huge gamble. An action to corruption and a
great perspective for development of the nation in the future

When we talk about nationalism, it is an act that is the result for their love on

I think he is an idealist type of person, because he always seeks for additional

his time. He doesn’t care about what’s going to happen to him as long as he
