give all the money in his purse to any man who was stronger than himself.
One day, when the general was out riding with some friends, his horse stumbled and cast a shoe. The general
asked a black smith to bring out one of his best horseshoes. With one twist, the general broke the iron shoe like a
biscuit.
For a moment the black smith looked at him then he brought out another shoe, which the general treated in the
same way. Then, the general said, “I see it no use picking and choosing among such a trashy lot. Give me another shoe
and let me go away.”
The black smith brought another shoe and fitted it on the horse. Then the general tossed him a gold coin. The
black smith held it up to the light and said, “This coin of yours is poor stuff, my lord. Look here!”
He took the coin between his finger and thumb, and with one pinch, he cracked it in two like a wafer. It was now
the general’s turn to stare. He gave the man a second coin, and it was broken in the same way. Then the black smith
said, “I see it is no used picking and choosing such a trashy lot, give me another coin and we will say goodbye.”
The general look at him then burst into a laugh, “fairly caught!” he then said, “My man, I promised all the money

Then she whispered to Sammy, “Remember the duck?” Sammy got nervous knowing his sister knew about the
duck and if he didn’t obey, she might tell his grandparents about it. So, without saying anything he did the dishes.
Later that day, Grandpa asked if the children wanted to go fishing but Grandma said, “I’m sorry but I need Marie
to help make a supper.” Marie just smiled and said, “Well that’s all right because Sammy told me he wanted to help.”
She whispered again to Sammy, “Remember the duck?” So, Marie went fishing and Sammy stayed to help. After
several days of Marie taking advantage of Sammy, he finally couldn’t stand it any longer. He came to Grandma and
confessed that he had killed the duck.
Grandma knelt down, gave him a hug and said, “Sweetheart, I know. I was standing at the window, and I saw
the whole thing but because I love you, I forgave you. I was just wondering how long you would let Marie take
advantage of you.”
