Sem I 2015/2016
M Kasim A Jalil, PhD
Lower Limb Stroke Patient Rehab Device

• Increasing number of people are suffering from full- or

partial-body stroke.
• Major issues in post-stroke treatment are equipment –cost,
human resource and space limitation in public hospitals
• Your task is to design a low-cost lower limb rehab device
for stroke patients to be used in Malaysian Public
Hospital/Home
Stair Lift
• Many homes in Malaysia are more than one-story
• The country population is ageing and the quality of
life (income) has improved significantly in the past
15-20 years.
• Many senior citizens have difficulty getting to the
upper levels due to health reasons.
• Your task is to design the stair lift to overcome this
problem.
Wheelchair Lift
• Disability access has become a requirement in many
building in Malaysia.
• The major challenge is always the cost and space-
limitation especially to old buildings.
• Your task is to design a wheelchair lift to enable
disabled people to get access to building, public
offices, and public facilities such as mosques,
museums, colleges and shops.
Movable (Wheel)chair Stair Lift
• Moving up and down the stairs are difficult for people with
medical conditions (permanent or temporary) in the
absence of disable-friendly lift/elevator.
• A simple solution to this problem is a ‘movable’ or ‘portable’
stair lift.
• Your task is to design a low-cost/affordable (Wheel)chair
Stair Lift to be used in Malaysian public hospital.
General Instructions
Group meetings & progress
• Every group (of 5 members) will be headed by a group leader. The
group leader must delegate and manage tasks effectively. Every
member must be well aware of and understand the development of
the group.
• Apart from the class meetings, every group is expected to meet at
least once a week outside class hours. The progress of your group
must be recorded in a log book (planned activities, meeting
outcomes, member assignment, and comments) and a file (to keep
downloaded materials, copies of valuable information).
Final Tender Evaluation Concept
• Every member must work as a team. The final evaluation will be
treated as a tender bidding process.
• The best design will be considered the winner! Therefore try to
produce the most cost effective design with the best performance.
Final submission
• At the end of this course, each group is expected to submit a final report
and design portfolio (log book, developmental drawings, and files
containing the collected information).
• The final report must be professionally done and spiral‐bound. The report
must have the following sections:
• Title page, Summary, Table of Content, List of Figures, List of Tables,
Reference Section, and Appendices.
• The final report should cover the project background, underlying
engineering fundamentals, analysis, design, summary and technical
documentation (technical drawings).
• The technical drawing must be CAD‐drawn and must comply with technical
drawing standards.
