What I Need to Know (Concept)

A conjunction is a part of speech that joins words, phrases, clauses, or sentences.

There are two kinds of conjunctions:
1. Coordinating conjunctions connect words or groups of words that are of equal grammatical
functions. They may show contrast, choice, or addition.
The coordinating conjunctions are the following:
a. for- indicates reason (because)
Mark was sorry for he was late.
b. and- indicates connection or addition of items within the same class or type.
The porridge was hot and delicious.
c. nor – indicates that the second or last member of the series of items is negated.
The surprise party was not organized by you nor me!
d. but – indicates contrast or exception
Rona may be thin, but she is healthy.
e. or – indicates an alternative or choice
You may eat the cake with a fork or a spoon.
f. yet- indicates contrast or exception (but)
I don’t eat much, yet I am getting bigger!
g. so – indicates reason for doing the thing that one has just mentioned
Mother spoke in a very soft voice, so she will not wake the baby up.
2. Subordinating conjunctions connect a subordinate (or dependent) clause to the main
(or independent) clause.
Examples:
Elaine ate the vegetables although it was bitter.
We cannot understand the problem on overpopulation unless explicit explanations
and illustrations are given.
