ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to raise awareness of how research is

prevalent among SHS-STEM students as well as to acknowledge student and

teacher viewpoints. Furthermore, researchers are interested in the benefits and

drawbacks of conducting research. The study's respondents were fifteen to twenty

SHS-STEM students from Our Lady of Fatima University and three to five

licensed teachers from the province of Pampanga. Researchers implemented

unstructured interviews using Google Meet/Zoom and survey surveys via Google

Forms with the goal of collecting all of the participants' thoughts and ideas so that

they may participate and convey their personal views with others. The questions

that will be asked throughout the interviews and surveys are open-ended so that

the person responding can give an honest answer. This research included reviews

of the origin of research as well as the importance of research in education and

society. The advantages and disadvantages of research, especially qualitative and

quantitative research, were also explored throughout the study. This study will be

qualitative in nature. The study will be conducted at Our Lady of Fatima

University in Pampanga, Philippines. This place was selected to determine the

efficiency of the studies among the students of the said school. The researchers

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Research has become an integral element of human existence to resolve

unanswered questions through an investigation approach to discovering solutions

and conclusion to the designated study (Marton & Dall'Alba, 2016). Moreover,

research has become one of the most effective tools for enhancing human’s

critical thinking and fact-finding abilities, as well as addressing our

misunderstanding. Research propels humanity forward, according to an article

(Simboli, 2016). It is fueled by curiosity: humans get curious, ask questions, and

immerse themselves in discovering everything there is to know (Robinson, 2018).

Without curiosity and research, progress would slow to a halt, and lives would be

completely different. Behind the bright aspect of research are the unpleasant sides,

and the researchers have encountered several barriers in the Research course

(Dadipoor et al., 2019).

6
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Students in the Philippines have been educated in the research subject,

which begins in senior high school and progresses to higher level of education

(Abdul, 2020). Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), a

strand designed to prepare students who express keen interest in taking college

degrees focused on STEM, senior high school (SHS) students will be exposed to

learning activities that will hone their knowledge and skills in analyzing data,

understanding real-world impacts, and conducting research (AMA University,

2021). As mentioned, STEM students are mostly experienced doing research,

thesis and capstone projects. Students often wonder whether research is necessary

as they move on in their lives. The difficulties of learning and performing

research are unavoidable, particularly for students who are new to it (Qasem,

Fawaz & Zayid, Elrasheed. 2019). Some of the difficulties such as lack of English

skills, reliance on self-reported data without the availability of cross-checking,

and insufficiency for accurate data or information . Research is known to be

tedious and exhaustive, hence the pessimistic outlook on students (Mesmer,

2020). Nonetheless, the research course is genuinely beneficial in assisting our

approaches to locate data, answers, and conclusions that can be used in actual

situations. Benefits such as expanding your knowledge that can be applied both

academically and in our careers, improves your critical thinking and analytical

7
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

skills through hands-on learning, defines academic and personal interests, and so

much more.

The study aims to focus on how Research is significant to SHS-STEM

students and also to understand the viewpoints between students and teachers.

Researchers are likewise curious about the advantages and disadvantages of doing

research. Therefore, at Our Lady of Fatima University (OLFU), researchers

conducted a study to evaluate why it is relevant to students, specifically Senior

High School (SHS) STEM students in Grades 11 and 12.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Numerous students have been facing challenges and problems in doing

research (Qasem, Fawaz & Zayid, Elrasheed. 2019). It requires deep knowledge,

planning, and hard work to accomplish. The purpose of this study is to determine

how Research influences SHS students, specifically from the SHS-STEM strand.

Students tend to see the negativity in writing research because of its difficulty to

conduct. In many cases, researchers or students give up providing quality research

for the reason of struggling excessively (Enago Academy, 2021). In this study,

researchers will present advantages and disadvantages, as well as, comparing the

perception of both students and teachers in Research subject. In that manner, both

parties will be able to understand each other.

8

1.3 Objectives

This research aims to determine why Research among SHS-STEM

students is important by interrogating the respondents. The specific objectives of

this study will be written down below:

(1) How research influences the academic performance of SHS-STEM students

by conducting a survey.

(2) To compare the teachers’ and students’ outlook on the said topic through

interviews and questionnaires.

(3) Find out and explore the advantages of conducting research.

(4) To determine the students’ extent to their capabilities through utilizing

unstructured questionnaires.

1.4 Research Questions

The specific questions that revolve around this research paper are:

1. What are the hurdles that STEM students experience when it comes to

doing research?

2. What will be the impact of researching on STEM students?

9
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

3. What advantages do STEM students gain from conducting research?

1.5 Scope and Limitations

This study emphasizes the importance of practical research to students. It

demonstrates how students deal with the difficulties and what beneficial results do

the students gain from conducting this research. The coverage of this study

involves 15-20 SHS students that are currently taking STEM, together with 3-5

licensed teachers who teach senior high school and college students within the

province of Pampanga. The researchers will conduct interviews through Google

Meet and survey questionnaires via Google Forms with a maximum of 45 minutes

to 1 hour that applies to both data-gathering methods as well as to collect personal

opinions of the participants. This study is limited to the significance of research to

SHS-STEM students.

1.6 Definition of Terms

SHS. is a school department that stands for Senior High School (Viloria Ed.D, E.

2016).

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

2.1 Origin of Research

In the 1570s, the noun Research is an “act of searching closely" for a

specific person or thing, from French recerche (1530s, Modern French recherche),

back-formation from Old French recercher "seek out, search closely". The

meaning "diligent scientific inquiry and investigation directed to the discovery of

some fact" is attested by the 1630s. The general sense of "investigations into

things, the habit of making close investigations" is by the 1690s. The phrase

research and development for "work on a large scale toward innovation" is

recorded in 1923. Whereas its verb form, in the former 1590s, "investigate or

study (a matter) closely, search or examine with continued care," from French

recercher, from Old French recercher "seek out, search closely," from re-, here

perhaps an intensive prefix (see re-), + cercher "to seek for," from Latin circare

"go about, wander, traverse," in Late Latin "to wander hither and thither (Harper,

n.d).

12

Most scientists at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century

chose to ignore the question of the origin of life on Earth, regarding it as too

mysterious and complex to handle. Yet, in the early 1950s an experimental field

devoted to the study of the problem made its first steps (Fry, 2006). The

innovative hypotheses of various scientists in the first decades of the 20th century,

particularly those of Russian biochemist Alexander I. Oparin and British

geneticist and biochemist J.B.S. Haldane played a crucial influence in this shift.

The views of Leonard Troland, a lesser-known American psychophysiologist,

were also influential in later advancements in origin-of-life research.

According to Frey (2018), Educational research has a nearly 200-year

history that began with the acknowledgement of education as a science in the

mid-1800s. Qualitative research began to emerge, as the impact of psychoanalysis

began to infiltrate the business sector around the turn of the 20th century (Conner,

2018). Paul Felix Lazersfield, the originator of qualitative research, demonstrated

in 1945 how psychology could be used to interpret human behavior. He

popularized unstructured interviewing and group conversations, emphasizing the

significance of addressing the crucial "why?" questions' enquiries. Projective

tactics including word associations, phrase completion, speech bubbles, and role

acting became popular in the 1960s and 1970s. As qualitative methods became

more established, the 'qual vs quant' dispute became more heated (Warren, 2020).

13
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Until this time, the dominant paradigm was scientific, demonstrable, quantitative

study.

2.2 Importance of Research

Research is often viewed as an academic activity conducted by others and

is not a concept acknowledged by managers, practitioners, and policymakers,

even though it should be. Karimi (2020) believes that professionals are always

learning and evaluating information, modifying their behavior in response to what

they discover, and aiming for improvement. Many undiscovered things have been

discovered by research that enhances functioning capabilities and develops the

understanding and decision-making of learners. Without research, one needs to

believe in intuition, which is not reliable (Goodrich, 2021). According to Azim

(2020), research is a knowledge-building tool; it enables efficient learning, helps

in understanding issues, and provides truthful evidence.

2.2.1 Importance of Research in Education

Research is a scientific and systematic investigation or inquiry

especially through search for new facts in any branch of knowledge (Basu,

2020). It is the most important tool humans have for broadening

knowledge and understanding of various topics and concepts. In

education, research is essential because it allows individuals to learn more

14
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

about the world around them. It produces better experiences and improves

the quality of education for all students and teachers.

The importance of research in education will continue to grow as

humans strive to improve as educators. It permits the public to evaluate

various school-based innovations, which is also necessary to advance the

field of education (Bellet, 2022). It also assures that students learn more,

or at least in different ways, than previous generations of students in order

to respond to changes and help create society's future.

2.2.2 Importance of Research to Society

Early civilizations made significant contributions to modern

research; without their curiosity about the dark sky, we would know

nothing about space. Decades of research have brought us to this point: a

civilized society with the knowledge and tools to progress (Simboli,

2016). Research on society has an instrumental impact by influencing the

development of policy, practice, or services; shaping legislation; and

changing behavior; as well as a conceptual impact by contributing to

policy understanding and re-framing debates (UK Research and

Innovation, 2021). In addition, Humans now understand that modern

issues necessitate modern solutions. Research is a catalyst for resolving

15
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

the world's most pressing problems, which grow in complexity over time.

The sum total of all study results throughout history has led people to this

place in civilization, which explains why research is essential (SIS, 2020).

Research has the potential to benefit society and help us achieve

specific, desired societal outcomes (GPG Chapter III, n.d.). Leaders are

increasingly in need of information based on facts and empirical evidence

as we face a more complex future. Academic-business collaboration is

important, as it will drive future research influence (Saïd Business School,

2022). In the business world, research plays an undeniable role. Successful

businesses invest in research and development to ensure they have access

to all market information. The academic phase of a student prepares them

for any future research tasks that may be beneficial to them (Azim, 2020).

Furthermore, the future of research in society in which new technology is

used to transform research practice while also positively and

opportunistically adapting to technological, scientific, social, political, and

geopolitical changes (Barlow, 2019).

Individuals, organizations, and nations benefit from research in a

variety of ways, including increased effectiveness of public services and

policies; improved quality of life and health; and financial advantages

16
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

(Research Impact Academy, 2019), along with assisting our government

and businesses in developing services, policies, and products that respond

to an identified need (The Research Society, 2022).

2.3 Advantages of Research

A system that provides education, training, mentoring, and special

activities to researchers. Research is a one-of-a-kind initiative that provides

support to our researchers at all phases of their careers. Research benefits current

and future generations by improving services and treatments. It aids in the

development of new diagnostic tests, treatments, and processes that may one day

benefit your children or grandkids. You might be able to get treatment that is not

yet offered to the broader population (Dowd, 2018). The most obvious benefit of

study is that you will gain more knowledge. Even if you think you know

everything there is to know about a subject, there is always more to learn. If you

are not, research allows you to build on any prior knowledge you may have about

the topic. The research process provides fresh opportunities for learning and

growth. Conducting research is the best way to get the most up-to-date

information available (Huberty, 2020). There is always new knowledge and

discoveries being discovered in various sectors, particularly scientific fields.

Staying current keeps everyone from falling behind and providing information

17
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

that is either wrong or incomplete. People will be more equipped to discuss a

topic and build on ideas if you have the most up-to-date information.

When people can see you are well-informed, they will take your words

more seriously. Research provides a firm basis upon which to establish one's

views and opinions. You can confidently speak about something you know to be

true. Your research should concentrate on the most reliable sources. People are

more inclined to pay attention if your study is strong (Soken, 2020). Climate

change, racial prejudice, gender inequality, and other challenges are all addressed

through research. It is impossible to demonstrate that climate change is worsening

or that gender disparity is not progressing as swiftly as it should be without clear

data. The public needs to be aware of the facts so that they may understand what

"becoming worse" or "not progressing" implies (Huberty, 2020). Going beyond

the raw facts and offering real-life tales that have a more personal impact on

individuals is also part of research.

2.3.1 Advantages of Qualitative Research

Qualitative research provides more content that may be applied in

the real world, as well as the opportunity to produce specific insights

(Miller, 2019). Researchers also believe that everyone has their own

distinctive voice. Qualitative discussions that rely on description have the

18
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

ability to give the audience influence, reversing the traditional

researcher/respondent dynamic (Naresh, 2021). Furthermore, it focuses

less on the measurements of the data being collected and more on the

subtleties of what might be discovered in that data. This provides for a

higher level of detail in the data, which can lead to greater potential for

gleaning insights during examination (Gaille, 2017).

This approach has the ability to thoroughly study and collect rich

descriptive data on social issues through organized interviews, cultural

immersion, case studies, and observation, for example, benefits qualitative

research. Examples include ethnography, narratives, and grounded theory,

all of which must adhere to the positivist paradigm of measuring variables

(Dowd, 2018). Qualitative research is a much more adaptable method. If

useful insights are not being captured, researchers can quickly adapt

questions, change the setting, or any other variable to improve responses

(Vaughman, 2021) allowing researchers to generate more trustworthy and

accurate information (Rahman, 2021).

2.3.2 Advantages of Quantitative Research

The approach and conclusions of quantitative research are valid,

dependable, and generalizable to a larger population. Quantitative

19
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Research data can be collected passively, however qualitative research

requires close attention to the data collection technique. Asynchronous

data collection methods such as surveys, polls, and other asynchronous

data collection methods deliver data points over a specified period of time,

allowing researchers to focus on more important activities (Adam, 2022).

Because it is based on statistical analysis, it takes less time. As a result,

researchers are relieved of the stress of devising explanatory techniques in

order to attain a goal (Samuel, 2021). Quantitative surveys can provide

dependable, reproducible information, thus a credible data collection can

provide you peace of mind while making future preparations (Sheragy,

2017). The quantitative findings are likely to be generalized to a full

population or a sub-population because it involves a larger sample that is

randomly selected. Data processing takes less time than sampling since

statistical procedures are used.

2.4 Disadvantages of Research

Qualitative research has the issue of not providing statistical

representation and only providing research data from individual perspectives,

making it a statistically worthless data collection method. Another downside is

that the results can be difficult to replicate. It's nearly impossible to duplicate

20
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

qualitative research findings because it relies on individual perspectives (Gaille,

2018). It is typically based on a hypothesis. Research can be highly reliant on the

outcomes, which can be discouraging when you are looking for a phenomenon

that does not exist (Estes, 2022). Although there are various advantages to

incorporating researchers' personal perspectives in qualitative research, the data

they collect will always have a subjective nature and disadvantages. Research data

can be modified to produce a subjective outcome, whether owing to researcher

bias or a simple mistake. When data are not provided in their complete context or

are collected improperly or deceptively, the resulting findings cannot be

accurately comprehended (Adam, 2022). Added that some people will always

believe that certain essential elements are more important to their conclusions

than others. (Miller, 2019). Some research methods ignore contextual sensitivity

in favor of focusing on meanings and experiences. For example, a

phenomenological approach aims to uncover, interpret, and comprehend the

participants' experiences and knowledge (Neubauer, 2019). Based on the study of

Rahman (2016), using previously collected data is likely to be a more complex

and time-consuming continual process of doing research.

Bastis (2021) explained there is a lot of unreviewed stuff on the internet,

who knows where they got their information. The internet does not always

provide accurate information. The majority of trustworthy resources on the

21
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

internet require money to access the complete information (Amy, 2017). When

conducting qualitative research, you must carefully formulate a hypothesis and

build up appropriate questionnaires for data collection and analysis. Any faults in

your arrangement, prejudice on the side of the researcher, or problems in

execution can render all of your results incorrect (Hans, 2020).

2.4.1 Disadvantages of Qualitative Research

Qualitative studies typically take longer to complete owing to the

laborious task of gathering and evaluating field notes, transcribing

interviews, finding themes, and reviewing images, for example (Dowd,

2018). Added that the information gathered entirely relied on open-ended

dialogues. As studied by Rahman (2021), because Qualitative research is

subjective, many people criticize it. As a result, researchers must exercise

extra caution to ensure that data is collected and analyzed professionally.

The quality of qualitative data is determined by the quality of the

researchers. Because of its extremely subjective nature, the researcher

becomes the dominating figure as the interviewer, resulting in the

collection of facts that they may find valuable or not, necessary or not

(Chukwuemeka ACMC, 2021). Another weakness is that Qualitative data

collection takes time.

22
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

2.4.2 Disadvantages of Quantitative Research

Quantitative research approaches are effective in the laboratory

under strictly controlled conditions. Assessing phenomena such as human

behavior in real situations is more difficult. Survey devices are susceptible

to problems such as measurement errors and poor sample practices

(Dowd, 2018). Furthermore, it has the disadvantage of not being able to

accurately generalize the data collected. Although Qualitative research

may reveal a big majority in favor, because there is no way to reexamine

the data, attitudes may shift with time (Chukwuemeka ACMC, 2021). As

examined by Savela (2018), on one hand, they fall short in terms of detail

when compared to qualitative approaches. That cannot be denied. Each

item can only be studied up to a specific extent, yielding just a limited set

of data that applies to all items. The minor variances between items within

those categories cannot be accommodated since they must be crammed

into a small number of categories. David (2021) states that since

quantitative research is focused on numerical data, researchers are unable

to investigate respondents' behaviors and opinions and may ignore deeper

themes and relationships. This form of study does not allow organizations

to fully comprehend their clients' thoughts. The limitation of using

quantitative methods is that the results may be overly generalized, and

23
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

most likely limited to the research paper's aims and objectives (SAGE

Publications, 2016). This is the case when the researcher does not use the

appropriate quantitative tools and does not focus on a representative

sample of the total population.

24
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

3.1 Research Design

This study will be using a qualitative design. Qualitative research is the

gathering and evaluating of non-numerical data (such as text, video, or audio) to

understand concepts, viewpoints, or experiences (Bhandari, 2020). The design

aims to focus on how research is significant to SHS-STEM students and to

understand the viewpoints of students and teachers. Hence, the researchers will

use a qualitative, grounded theory-based analysis with qualitative data to support

the most appropriate approach.

3.2 Research Locale

The study will be conducted at Our Lady of Fatima University in

Pampanga, Philippines. This place was selected to determine the efficiency of the

studies among the students of the said school. The SHS STEM students and

licensed teachers of Our Lady of Fatima University in Pampanga, Philippines

were chosen by the researchers as the respondents of the study. These respondents

will be interviewed via Google Meet or Zoom and will be given survey

questionnaires depending on their availability.

25
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

3.3 Population and Sampling

This study will be conducted for the population and sampling. The

researcher needs to determine the population before collecting the sample. Allen

(2017) explains that a population is made up of all the things or occurrences of a

particular category about which researchers want to learn more.

The population of this study consists of 15-20 SHS STEM students and

Licensed Professional Teachers in the A.Y. 2021–2022 within the province of

Pampanga.

In this study, the researchers will utilize purposive sampling. Sampling is

the act of selecting a predefined number of observations from a larger population.

Depending on the sort of study being conducted, these methods will be utilized to

sample from a broader population (Tuovila, 2020).

Researchers have to interview roughly 15 to 20 SHS STEM students and 3

to 5 Licensed Professional Teachers. The researchers will utilize the

questionnaires to collect information. Using this method, the researchers will be

able to obtain the data needed for this inquiry.

26
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

3.4 Research Ethics

The researchers followed all essential procedures to guarantee that no

ethical codes were violated in conducting the study. For example, the researchers

paraphrased and summarized the necessary literature and studies to avoid

plagiarism. In the sources section, all references were appropriately cited.

Likewise, the researchers ensured that the data collection method was ethical.

Participants were not compelled to participate in the research study, and they were

not obliged to reveal their identities. Apart from this, the respondents were asked

for consent, and they agreed to participate in the study.

To protect their anonymity and safety, it was decided to withhold the

names of the respondents. In terms of protecting the respondents' personal

information, the questionnaire forms were also kept secure. Subsequently, the

respondents were free to respond to the questions whenever they wanted.

3.5 Research Instruments

This study's researchers will conduct an interview, which will be the

primary instrument for acquiring data for this study. This data-gathering tool will

aid the researchers in gaining a better understanding of the interviewee's

experiences and perspectives on the topic. The researchers devised an

unstructured interview in which the interviewer would deliver a series of

27
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

questions and the interviewee will be given the opportunity to answer each

question based on their own ideas and feelings, as well as explain why they

responded the way they did.

The interview was done using digital communication devices in the

presence of both the interviewer and the interviewee. The applications utilized to

conduct the data-gathering were Google Meet/Zoom and Google Forms.

3.6 Data Collection

The researchers generated interviews and questions and gathered all of the

participants' views and ideas so that they could engage and express their

perspectives with others. Researchers created a Google Form (Gform) for those

who are covered by the inquiry, which includes the chosen SHS - STEM students

and Licensed Professional Teachers around the province of Pampanga.

Using interviews and questionnaires, researchers elicited the responses

and perspectives of each person covered by the inquiry. During the interview, the

types of questions used are open-ended questions. When conducting usability

studies or field studies, it’s a great idea to ask lots of open-ended questions.

Typically, researchers ask questions before, during, and after research sessions.

It’s easy to focus on what you want to know rather than on how you ask, but the

way you ask questions matters a lot in terms of what and how much you can

28
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

discover. You can learn unexpected and important things with this easy technique

(Farrell, 2016).

3.7 Data Analysis

The researchers will carry out thematic analysis through an inductive

approach throughout the entire study. Afterwards, the information will be kept

private and used as the foundation for the research. The results will be thoroughly

studied in order to determine the students' viewpoints on the topic.

The data will be thoroughly examined by developing and interpreting

logical meaning for major themes as they emerge naturally from the category

scheme. Eventually, these analyzed data will be utilized to build the conclusion.
