Reading is the most important skill


in other language from other
language skill is in acquiring
language. It is a cognitive process of
decoding symbols to derive meaning
from text(as in reading a book or
reading a music.)
Why do we read?
 Information
 Verify existing Knowledge
 Pleasure
 Have access to the literature
 Interest
 Enhance knowledge
 Exam!!
What is the content?
 Fiction (Long and Short)
 Songs
 Plays
 Current events, feature articles and essay
 Academic articles, reports, reviews
 Warnings, Direction
 Letters, Postcards, and notes
 Business letters
Hard to believe but ….
 READING applies to every class and everything you do
on a daily basis.

- English
- and YES Computers too.

According to research that 40-
50% of the material we read is
forgotten very shortly about 15
minutes.
Over 40% of high school students fail to
graduate because many of them can’t
read enough to keep up.
Over 50% of college students fail to
graduate because they are not prepared
for the amount of reading needed in
college.

What is Skimming??

Skimming - a reading technique means going


quickly over the material in order to get an
idea of it’s subject matter without having to
pay close attention to details.
This is a technique used to identify the main
ideas of a text.
What is Scanning?
Scanning refers to reading a text quickly in order to locate
specific pieces of information.

When scanning,

1. Don’t start from the beginning and read to the end


2. Jump around in the information you need.
3. Do not read every word
4. Look for information as quickly as you can.
