CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION
1. Background.

Reading can sometimes be both enjoyable and exhausting. Limited time and a large number
of books to understand, force us to read as efficiently as possible. By using scanning
techniques in reading we can save a lot of time so that the material can be understood more
quickly because scanning is a way to get quick information from the text in a short time and
digesting the whole text is considered impractical mastering this method is considered very
necessary for every academic for more efficient learning.

CHAPTER 2

DISCUSSION

Scanning in Indonesian means cursory. This reading technique is used to get specific
information quickly and accurately from a book. Usually, scanning is used when we already
know what we want so that it will focus on the specific contents of the book. The usefulness
of scanning in research is to find certain facts, to study heavy topics, and to answer questions
that require factual support, in scanning, we must have a question in mind then we read a
section only to find the answer, and ignore unrelated information.

1. DEFINITION OF SCANNING

Scanning is a technique of skimming to find certain information in a passage quickly

and accurately. Scanning in English means reading at a glance. Scanning reading or also
called scanning is a reading technique to obtain information without reading others quickly
and accurately.

Another definition of scanning reading is a way of reading at a glance and quickly but
thoroughly which aims to find and get certain information or facts from a text.

1) According to SOEDARSO, scanning is a reading technique to get information

without reading anything else. So, directly on the problem being sought, namely specific facts
and certain information.

2) According to HARYADI, scanning is a fast and direct reading technique basically.

3) According to FARIDA RAHIM, scanning is very fast reading, which means

reading by prioritizing speed without neglecting understanding. Usually the speed is related
to the reader's purpose, needs, and reading material, meaning that a good fast reader does not
apply his reading speed constantly in various weather and reading conditions, so a person
who reads will not ignore the information he gets. Therefore, scanning reading does not need
to read the entire text, but only directly look for the core or information to be sought.

2. SCANNING READING STEPS

1. State the specific information you are looking for

2. Notice the use of sequences such as "numbers", "letters", "steps", "next", and so
on. Try to anticipate how the answer will appear and what clues we might use to
help find the answer. For example, if you are looking for a specific date, you will
quickly read a paragraph that only looks for numbers.
3. Look for words that are bolded, italicized, or printed differently from the rest of the
text.
4. Sometimes the writer places the word kuni at the paragraph boundary.

According to SOBIRIN NUR, scanning reading steps can be done by:

a. You must know what you are looking for, set first one word or fragment of a word
that becomes a keyword.

b. Search on which page can you find the keyword using the index on the page
attached to the back of the book.

c. Narrow the search area if there is no index, or there is an index in the book, by
reading the table of contents, knowing what chapter title and sub title the page
number is on. estimate whether the keywords and thoughts we are looking for
under the title or sub title match.

According to H.SUYANTO, scanning reading can be done on various special texts

such as telephone instruction books, the steps for reading instruction books
according to H.SUYANTO:

a. Find the name of the city you are looking for in the margin of the telephone
directory.

b. Find the first letter of the name of the person you are looking for, for example you
are looking for Park Chanyeol's phone number. Immediately open the page that
contains the first letter P.

c. Find a name that begins with park. You will find several park names.

d. Next, you just need to search for Park Chanyeol's name. There you will find his
name, address, and phone number.

3. BENEFITS OF READING BY SCANNING

1. Can find specific information needed from a reading text or book quickly and
efficiently.

2. Can browse through many pages of a book in a short time.

3. Does not waste too much time looking for something desired from a book,
especially actions that do not support information retrieval.

This allows you to read more efficiently and retain more information. By using
scanning reading techniques, we can break down information into smaller, more
manageable chunks.

4. COMMON MISTAKES TO AVOID IN READING SCANNING

One of the most common mistakes people make when scanning is trying to read
every word. this defeats the purpose of scanning, which is to identify important
information quickly. instead, focus on previewing the headings and subheadings, and
only read the parts that are relevant to your needs.

Another mistake is losing focus while scanning. it is very easy to get distracted by
other information on the page or by external factors such as noise or distractions.

CLOSING

1. CONCLUSIONS

The use of scanning in research is to find certain facts, to study heavy topics, and to

not need to read the contents of the entire text, but only directly look for the core or

2. ADVICE

Our suggestion as presenters, especially in learning about scanning, is that readers

should not only know what scanning is, what its benefits are and when to use it, but we
invite readers to apply it in reading techniques specifically.
