BAB I
INTRODUCTION
A. Background

Reading skills are one of the four skills that students must master. Reading

skills are one of the skills emphasized by schools, apart from writing, speaking,

listening and arithmetic.

Learning to read basically aims to enable students to capture and understand

information conveyed through written media. In the current era of globalization,

various information is conveyed through various media such as the internet,

newspapers, magazines, newspapers, and so on. This requires students to have the

ability to read quickly and understand quickly in accessing this information.

Speed reading contains various implications such as reading goals, habits,

reasoning, and reading material. A fast reader does not mean applying the same

reading speed to every situation, atmosphere and type of reading he encounters. This

means that good readers do not apply a constant reading speed in various situations

and reading situations. In speed reading, readers prioritize speed but do not ignore

understanding of what is read. The opinion above shows that skimming and scanning

reading techniques can help and provide opportunities for students to improve their

reading skills for the better.

Speed reading is very useful for students to learn the knowledge they will

understand. If students' reading speed is less than optimal, it will hinder the learning

process. There are 2 factors that cause a person's reading speed to be less than

optimal, namely internal factors and external factors. First, internal factors include

intelligence (IQ), interests, attitudes, talents, motivation, reading goals, and so on.

Second, external factors, namely in the form of reading facilities, 4 reading texts
2

(simple-difficult, easy-difficult), environmental factors, or socio-economic

background factors, reading habits and traditions.

Therefore, to be able to improve students' reading skills well, teachers should

be able to use creative learning methods and not just use the lecture method. One

method that can be used to improve students' reading skills is skimming and scanning

reading techniques. Skimming and scanning reading techniques are two fast reading

techniques that can be used. Speed reading is a reading technique to obtain

information by jumping directly into the problem or fact being sought. Speed reading

is a reading method that is done by reading silently.

B. Formulation of the problem

From the background description above, several problems can be identified

that wish to be researched, including:

1. What is the meaning of scanning reading technique?

2. What is the meaning of the skimming reading technique?

C. Research purposes

1. To find out what is the meaning of scanning reading techniques?

2. To find out what is the meaning of the skimming reading technique?

DISCUSSION

A. Scanning dan Skimming

Skimming and scanning fast reading techniques - It turns out that reading also

has its own techniques. If previously all we knew was normal reading, this time

Merahitam will share a few tips regarding fast reading techniques, namely skimming

and scanning.

Why should you speed read? It turns out that speed reading has many benefits. Apart

from saving a lot of time, fast reading techniques can also make it easier for us to

understand the meaning of what we are reading, besides that it can also make the

brain smarter. In training to increase reading speed, there are several speed reading

techniques that can be used. These techniques include:

B. Understanding Scanning Reading

Face-to-face reading (scanning) or also called scanning reading is very fast

reading. When someone reads a scan, he or she will go beyond many words.

According to Mikulecky & Jeffries (in Farida Rahim, 2005), scanning reading is

important for improving reading skills. This reading technique is useful for finding

information as quickly as possible. Usually we read word for word of every sentence

we read. By practicing scanning reading techniques, a person can learn to read to

comprehend reading texts more quickly. However, reading by scanning is not only

used. If you need to read textbooks, poetry, important letters from legal experts, and

so on, you need to read them in more detail.

Scanning or reading scans means looking for certain information quickly and

accurately. Scanning means flying over the pages of a book. Reading using a scanning

technique means sweeping the pages of a book to find something you need. Scanning
4

has to do with moving the eyes quickly across specific parts of a page looking for

specific words and phrases.

The scanning reading technique is a technique of finding information from reading

material quickly, by sweeping page by page evenly, then when you get to the required

part, eye movements stop. The eyes move quickly, jump around, and don't look word

for word.

C. Langkah-langkah Scanning

1. Pay attention to the use of sequences such as 'number', 'letter', 'step', 'first',

'second', or 'next'.

2. Look for words that are bold, italicized, or printed differently from the rest of the

text.

3. Sometimes writers place keywords at paragraph boundaries

Other scanning steps or processes are:

Scanning is done by:

1. Move your eyes like an arrow that slides straight down to search for

predetermined information,

2. Once found, the speed is slowed down to find a complete picture of the

information sought, and

3. Readers must have a good understanding of the characteristics of what they read

(for example, a dictionary is arranged alphabetically and there are keywords on

each page at the top right, an encyclopedia is arranged alphabetically with terms

consisting of two words reversed, and so on).

D. Scan destination

The purpose of scanning readings is:

1. Search for information in books quickly,

5

2. Scanning is a fast reading technique to find information that has been determined

by the reader,

3. The reader has determined the words he is looking for before the scanning activity

is carried out, the reader does not read other parts of the text except the

information he is looking for.

4. Get specific information from a text. Usually this is done when you already know

exactly what you are looking for so concentrate on looking for a specific answer.

E. Example

Scanning for example reading, looking up the meaning of words in the

dictionary, reading programs broadcast on television, reading travel lists, looking for

telephone numbers in the telephone book, reading menus in restaurants, reading class

schedules, searching on bulletin boards, searching for topics on lists. contents of

books etc.

F. Understanding Skimming Reading

Skimming is reading quickly to find out the content or general part of a

reading. (Farida Rahim, 2005). Screen reading is needed to find out the author's point

of view about something, find paragraph organization patterns, and find general ideas

quickly (Mikulecky & Jeffries in Farida Rahim, 2005).

Another meaning of skimming is skimming or reading quickly to get

information from what we read. Skimming is used to do a general quick reading of

reading material. In skimming, the reading process is done by jumping around by

looking at the main ideas in the reading material while understanding the big themes.

Apart from getting the main idea of a text. To find out whether an article

matches what we are looking for. To judge whether the article is interesting, read
6

further in detail. Skimming reading speed is usually around 3-4 times faster than

regular reading.

G. Skimming Steps

1. Read the title, subtitle and subheadings to find out what the text is talking about.

2. Look at the illustrations (pictures or photos) so you can get further information

about the topic.

3. Read the beginning and end of the sentence of each paragraph

4. Don't read word for word. Let your eyes explore the outer shell of a text. Search

for keywords or keywords

5. Continue by thinking about the meaning of the text

H. The purpose of skimming

Many people interpret skimming as simply sweeping the page, even though

the actual meaning is a reading skill that is arranged systematically to get efficient

results, for various purposes, such as the following:

1. To identify the reading topic. If you go to a bookstore or library and want to

know what is covered in the book you chose, you skim for a few minutes (or

browse). Skimming to see the material to be read, just to find out the material, is

also done by people to select articles in magazines and newspapers (clippings).

2. To find out the opinion (opinion) of the community. Here you already know the

topic being discussed, what you need is the author's opinion about it. For

example, newspaper headlines; You might read the first or last paragraph which

usually contains the conclusion made by the author (editor).

3. To get the important parts we need without reading the whole thing. You need to

look at all that material to pick out good ideas, but not read it in full
7

1. Understand the organization of writing, the order of main ideas and how

everything is arranged in a unified thought and look for relationships between

parts of the reading. It may be chronological, comparative, or in some other

form. Skimming is useful for selecting material that needs to be studied and

remembered. Skimming is useful for surveying a book before reading, as

seen in the previous description of SQ3R.

2. To refresh what you have read, for example when preparing for an exam or

before delivering a lecture. This skimming is also called a review.

page looking for specific words and phrases. scanning to find specific numbers in the

telephone directory, words in the dictionary.

Skimming is used to get the main idea of a text. To find out whether an article

matches what we are looking for. To judge whether the article is interesting, read

further in detail. Skimming reading speed is usually around 3-4 times faster than regular

reading. skimming to get the main ideas from the textbook pages so you can decide

whether the book is useful and whether it should be read more slowly and in detail.
