CHAPTER I

1. Previewing

A. Definition of Previewing
Previewing is pre-reading skill by which the reader tries to gather as much
information about the text as he/she can before reading it. This gathering of information
helps the reader to have a general picture of the text. Previewing is a way to view text
globally. The purpose of previewing is simply to obtain general information about the
content of a text, especially the topic of reading text, previewing before reading the text
makes an important contribution to the process of understanding information quickly.
Previewing is done by looking at the first sentences and the last sentence in each
paragraph. This is because the writing patterns people based English have an inductive
tendency, “straight to the point” in that case, the topic sentence always appears in the first
sentences of each paragraph.
Previewing also gives you the experience that you are can take the essence of
information from a reading text without having the raed word by word. This previewing
activity also provides the ability to be one of the basic assets to improve the level of
reading speed and henceforth used in skimming.

B. How Does It Work?

Before reading, look at the title of the text. Try to find out what the writer(s)
wants to tell you. Look at the photos, illustrations, and the other graphics in a text before
you read. This will give you a visual idea of what the text is about. Also read the first
sentence or paragraph of the text. Another way to preview is to look at the structure of the
written discourse. The structure of a letter is different from that of a newspaper article.
C. Steps for Applying the Skill
Read the tittle. Quite often the main idea of the text is:
 Summarized the right in the tittle.
 Read the boldface headings and words in boldfaced type. The headings condense
the text content for you into just a few words and give you an idea the author is
headed.
 Look over any graphics. Are there photo, maps or charts? These graphic aids
provide you with a quick look at the text contents and main purpose.
 Read the first paragraph and/or the last paragraph. First paragraph most often
contains the topic and the main idea. By previewing the first paragraph you will
have a pretty good sense where the author is headed.
CHAPTER II

1. Predicting

A. Definition of Predicting
Predicting is ability to predict what will come by using grammatical, logical and
cultural. Instructions. Before reading a book, we usually estimate the contents of the book
from the cover image or from the cover image or from the title and then we read the
abstract contained on the cover of the back of the book.
In addition to guessing the contents of the book, we can also guess the contents of
an article and paragraph. In this discussion in particular we will discuss about estimating
the last sentence of a paragraph. For example, we are currently reading paragraph 1, then
reading paragraphs 2,3, and so on. So before moving on to paragraph 2 we can estimate
the contents of that paragraph from the last sentence of the paragraph that we are reading.
Predicting is an important reading strategy. When making predictions, we
envision what will come next in the text, based on their prior knowledge. Making
predictions encourages readers to use crtical thinking and problem solving skills. Readers
are given the opportunity to reflect and evaluate the text, this extracting deeper meaning
and comprehension skills. Students will also be more interested in the raeding material
when they connect their knowledge with the new information that is being learned.

B. How to Predict
 Review the front and back of a book, the table of contents, the chapter names,
subhedaings and diagrams prior to reading.
 Make conversations to the text using your prior knowledge.
 Create your prediction.

2. Guidelines for Previewing and Predicting Longer Passages

 Preview for only a few seconds.
 Read the title.
 Decide what kind of the text it is.
 Look at the length and organization of the passage.
 Notice if there are maps, pictures, charts, names, dates, or numbers in the passage.
 Look at the first line or sentence of each paragraph and the last sentence of the
final paragraph.
Conclusion :
Previewing means looking for information before you read and help you read faster and
understand better. Predicting is ability to predict what will come by using grammatical, logical
and cultural. Instructions. Previewing and predicting help you read and understand better. This is
because you are already thinking about what you will read. You should always preview and
predict before you read. One way to enter a text is to preview titles, subtitles, visuals, and other
text features and make a prediction about the topic and purpose of the text. The Previewing and
Predicting process will lead students through a series of questions that will help them make an
accurate prediction.
