A. SCANNING SUMMARY

Scanning is a comprehensive technique that is able to quickly skim the entire reading

material. This technique applies speed reading to get one piece of information without

reading the others.

How does it work? This reading technique is useful for finding some information as

quickly as possible. Usually we read word for word from every sentence he reads. By

practicing Scanning reading techniques, we can learn to read to understand reading texts in a

faster way.

Steps to read Scanning:

1. take a quick look at the table of contents and preface

2. Briefly review the background of the book's writing

3. Read the introduction briefly

4. Look in the table of contents for the important chapters.

5. read the conclusion section (if any)

6. see at a glance the bibliography, index list, or appendix.

The material used for Scanning is usually organized in the following ways:

alphabetical, chronological, non-alphabetical, by category, or textual. Alphabetical

information is arranged in order from A to Z, while chronological information is arranged in

time or numerical order.

Learning to use your hands while scanning is very helpful in finding specific

information. Did you do something with your hands to look up a word in the dictionary? To

find meeting times on your calendar? To read train or bus schedules? Using your hands or

fingers is helpful in focusing your attention and keeping your place while scanning the

column of material.
Why should Scan? For example, in everyday life you can use Scanning to look up

phone numbers, look up words in the dictionary, look up television shows and look up travel

lists. That way you will easily know whether the reading contains the information you want.

B. PREVIEWING & PREDICTING SUMMARY

Previewing and Predicting is estimating or predicting a text or narrative so that we can

estimate whether the text or narrative that we have is in accordance with the information we

are looking for. We must have an underlying reason why we predict a text or a narrative.

Examples of use:

- See the cover of a book whether it matches the information we need or not.

- Listen to the text read aloud, to guess from the image or matching information

previewing is a speed reading activity. This activity allows you, the students, to put

the text accordingly the context. This activity also helps you to assess the level of the

difficulty of a reading text, and how deep the background knowledge is you on the topic

discussed. So, this is the analogy. When you are about to embark on a journey, and you

already have a map then you can design the trip You. You will also have an idea of what will

be you meet on the way. Such is the benefit of previewing. By because you by skimming first

then that will make it easier for you when doing reading activities.

Previewing also gives you the experience that you can take the essence of information

from a reading text without having to read word for word. This previewing activity also

provides ability which is one of the basic capital to increase reading speed level and also for

further use in skimming.

As for predicting, it is a reading skill in which you, have awareness and vigilance of

the thought processes that occur when we draw an "inference". Some of the learning activities

here will show how to find indications of evidence for inference that you do. After studying

this module you are expected to have: the right skills and strategies needed to understand a
variety of texts; mastering various reading skills, namely: previewing, scanning, guessing

words, and skimming; and have interest and able to enjoy reading in English.

C. MAIN IDEAS SUMMARY

The main sentence, the main idea, the main idea, and the main idea are four terms that

can actually be reduced to two; Main sentence and main idea/main idea/main thought.

Main idea, main idea, and main idea are three different terms that refer to the same

problem. "Idea" in the Big Indonesian Dictionary (KBBI) is defined as a design that is

arranged in the mind. Meanwhile, "idea" means the result of thought. And "mind" is the

result of thinking. But in English the three terms designate one term "Idea" although of

course the etymology will be different.

I conclude that "idea" is an absorption language for the meaning which is also referred

to as "idea" or "thought". The main idea, main idea, and main idea in English is called "main

idea". So we will discuss the meaning of “main sentence” and “main idea/main idea/main

thought. The main idea or in English "main idea" can simply be interpreted as the core of the

main sentence. This understanding is the result of the approach of the application, not the

creative process of writing. Because basically, the main idea will be forced or naturally stated

clearly in the main sentence.

In the example paragraph above, the main idea is “that signs of infection can be found

on their own by closely observing the child's skin.” The main idea is abstract. That is, the

main idea is not only stated concretely in a paragraph. This main idea will be stated in the

form of the main sentence. While sentences can take various forms and points of view.

From the description above, we will easily find the main idea of a paragraph when the

main sentence is found. Vice versa, the main sentence will be easy to find, when the main

idea can be captured. However, because the main sentence is more applicable, it will be more

objective if the search for the main sentence takes precedence over the main idea.
Understanding of the two things above is only possible through a continuous

process of practice. In the learning process at school, students should be directed to continue

to practice finding these two things in one or three full discourses. Discourse can be taken

from trusted newspapers or other media.

Looking for the main idea in the Orientation paragraph

Pay attention to this paragraph bellows !

On Friday I went to Mount Bromo. It is one of the mountains Iwant to see very

much. It is near Probolinggo. That is why I stayed at Nida and Hasan's house at Cemara

Lawang, Probolinggo.

Remember :

- main idea is the main idea (main idea) in a paragraph.

- The main idea can be placed at the front, middle or end of the paragraph.

Example :

The main idea in the paragraph above is at the beginning of the paragraph, namely:

"On Friday I went to Mount Bromo".
