PRELIMINARY

1.1 Beground

Intensive reading has become an important aspect of reading understanding. In the learning
process, what is often used is extensive reading to understand a text. Intensive reading
unconsciously helps more students' understanding of a text, because it is done intensively.
Intensive reading is an activity to understand text sentences by using sentence. According to
the Nation (2009:25) as quoted by Widya (2009), intensive.reading text learning can be a
means to increase students' knowledge about language features and their control over
reading strategies. This can also improve their comprehension skills. Intensive reading
focuses on understanding of a particular text without thinking about whether the features
learned in the text will be useful when reading other texts.

Intensive Reading requires students to identify words, words, meaning of them and
determine accurate reading scenarios. Intensive reading practice can be considered as a
starting point for being critical because it allows students to recognize what the text says,
what the text does, and what the text does meaning through context, language, and structure.
Intensive reading has important role to play in helping learners gain fluency, first in critical
areas of vocabulary and word recognition and later in developing better reading
comprehension skills. Intensive reading practice can focus more on important core
vocabulary, text organization patterns and text types the processing required to adequately
understand any text. Intensive reading is a type of reading in which the reader other than
linguistics knowledge must understand semantic details and pay attention to text, because,
the goal is to obtain certain information. This provides a basis for explaining structural
difficulties and to expand knowledge of vocabulary and idioms. In this type of complex
reading material is commonly used, and the level of reading seems to be much lower than
other types of reading. Intensive reading is for a high level of understanding and retention
over a long period of time.
Intensive reading involves reading a text in detail with two objectives understand the text
and learn the characteristics of language through focus on these items.

DISCUSSION

2.1 Meaning and Purpose Of Intensive Reading

a. Intensive Reading

Intensive reading is a technique of reading seriously or seriously to understand the content


of the reading. Another definition according to Wikipedia, intensive reading is a careful
study, careful study, and detailed handling by readers of a short reading of about two to four
pages.

While the understanding of intensive reading ability is an ability to understand in detail the
contents of the reading completely, accurately and critically on a fact, concept, opinion,
idea, experience, feeling and message. When reading multiple readers often read only one or
only a few of the passages. This has the aim of growing and honing the ability to read
critically.

In intensive reading, it is likened to techniques in reading for learning. Intensive reading


skill of the readers is to understand the text, it can be lateral level, critical interactive, or
evaluative. In the cognitive aspect, the development of intensive reading techniques is for
comprehensive reading skills.

b. Purpose of Intensive Reading

The purpose of intensive reading is to obtain information from discussion material, besides
that it can also be used as a means in determining a subject matter or interesting subject
from the reading text so that it can be used as material in the discussion.

Intensive reading can also be applied as a means of choosing one or several appropriate
ideas to be discussed with friends. In addition to this method, we can also determine the
material for discussion by making a conclusion from the main ideas and then taking the
essence of the problem.

There are things that need to be considered about the existence of information that is worthy
of discussion, among others, it can add knowledge or insight, has benefits and would be
better if it became a topic of discussion in the community.
2.2 Characteristics Of Intensive Reading

The characteristics of intensive reading are as follows:

• Reading to gain a broad level of understanding in the hope of remembering it for a long
time.

• Read clearly and in detail in order to get an understanding of everything that includes the
content and parts of the reading text

• This type of reading is the basis for learning to do better comprehension and remember it
longer

• Intensive reading does not use a single reading method but uses a variety of reading
techniques, namely scanning, comprehensive reading, skimming, and other techniques

• The purpose of intensive reading is to develop detailed reading skills that emphasize word
understanding, vocabulary development, sentences and understanding all of the content of
the text

• This activity allows students to be trained to read text sentences carefully and with full
concentration, with accuracy they will find structural errors, vocabulary and also the use of
spelling or punctuation.

• This activity can train students to think more critically, creatively, and innovatively

2.3 How To Read Intensive Reading

There are several ways that must be considered in relation to information that is worth
discussing, among others, it can increase knowledge and insight, has benefits and is even
better if it becomes a topic of discussion in the community.

When inferring information or discussion-worthy subjects from a text, you should do the
following:

• Reading carefully will be able to determine what is most interesting about other things. But
it's good if you find the main ideas that exist and then choose the most suitable for
discussion.

• Considering the readiness of the self and the readiness of the discussion partners regarding
the ability to master or understand the material to be discussed. Do not let you determine a
good discussion but you yourself do not understand the problem.
• Consideration of references that belong to discussion participants related to the things to be
discussed.

2.4 Benefits Of Intensive Reading

When intensive reading is done, there are benefits, namely:

1). Readers can master the content of the text well

2). Readers can find out the background of writing the text

3). Readers can have longer memory related to text content

3.1 Conclusion

Intensive reading is one of the useful strategies in learning and teaching vocabulary, helping
students to understand the meaning of words. Many English learners find that learning new
vocabulary and words is one of the most challenging parts of mastering English.

The purpose of intensive reading is to focus on content and grammatical structure. Teachers
can also take part in the process by reading aloud, asking questions, and asking students to
predict text information. In this way, students get the opportunity to understand the meaning
of a text.
