SCANNING AND SKIMMING

A. Reading Scanning

1. Understanding

Reading face to face (scanning) or also called scanning reading is very fast reading. When
someone reads a scan, he will transcend many words. According to Mikulecky & Jeffries (in
Farida Rahim, 2005), reading scan is important to improve reading skills. This reading technique
is useful for finding some information as quickly as possible. Usually we read word for word
from each sentence that is read. By practicing scan reading techniques, one can learn to read to
understand reading texts in a faster way. But, reading by scanning is not used origin. If you need
to read textbooks, poems, important letters from legal experts, etc., you need to read them in
more detail.

Scanning or reading scan means finding specific information quickly and accurately. Scanning
means to fly above the pages of a book. Reading by scanning technique means sweeping through
the pages of a book to find something that is needed. Scanning is concerned with moving the
eyes quickly throughout certain sections of the page to search for specific words and phrases.

Scan reading technique (scanning) is a technique of finding information from readings quickly,
by sweeping page by page evenly, then when it reaches the part needed, eye movements stop.
Eyes move fast, jump up and down, and do not see word for word.

2. Scanning steps

• Pay attention to the use of sequences such as 'numbers', 'letters', 'steps', 'first', 'second', or 'next'.

• Look for words that are bold, italic or that are printed differently from other text.
• Sometimes the writer places keywords in paragraph boundaries

Other scanning steps or processes are:

Scanning is done by:

1) Moving the eyes like an arrow directly sliding down to find information that has been set,

2) Having found the speed is slowed to find complete information from the information sought,
and

3) Readers are required to have a good understanding of the characteristics read (for example, the
dictionary is arranged alphabetically and there are keywords on each page at the top right,
encyclopedias are arranged alphabetically with reversals for terms consisting of two words, etc.)

3. Purpose

The purpose of reading scanning is:

• Search for information in a book quickly,

• Scanning is a speed reading technique to find information that has been determined by the
reader,

• The reader has determined the words sought before the scanning activity is carried out, the
reader does not read other parts of the text except the information sought.

• Get specific information from a text. Usually, this is done if you already know exactly what
you are looking for so concentrate on searching for specific answers.

Example
Reading scanning / reading, for example, reading the meaning of KTA in the dictionary, reading
broadcast programs on television, reading the travel list, looking for phone numbers in the
telephone book, reading the menu list at the restaurant, reading the lesson schedule, searching the
notice board, looking for topics on the list contents of a book etc.

B. Reading Skimming

1. Understanding

Skimming is reading quickly to find out the general contents or parts of a reading. (Farida
Rahim, 2005). Reading layap is needed to know the author's point of view about something, find
the pattern of paragraph organization, and find general ideas quickly (Mikulecky & Jeffries in
Farida Rahim, 2005).

Another understanding of skimming reading is skimming or speed reading to get information

from what we read. Skimming is done to do a quick reading in general in a reading material. In
skimming, the reading process is done by jumping around by looking at the main points in the
reading material while understanding the big theme.

In addition to getting the main idea from a text. To find out whether an article matches what we
are looking for. To assess the article, is it interesting to read further in detail. Skimming reading
speeds are usually around 3-4 times faster than normal reading.

2. Skimming steps

• Read the title, subheading and subheading to find out what the text is talking about.

• Pay attention to illustrations (pictures or photos) so that you get more information about the
topic.

• Read the beginning and end of each sentence

• Don't read word for word. Let your eyes skimming the skin outside a text. Look for keywords

• Continue to think about the meaning of the text

3. Purpose

Many interpret skimming as simply sweeping a page, while the real understanding is a reading
skill that is arranged systematically to get efficient results, for various purposes, such as the
following:

1. To recognize the topic of reading. If you go to the bookstore or library and want to find out
what discussion in the book you chose, you skimming for a few minutes (or browsing).
Skimming to see the material to be read, just to find out the material, also done by people to
choose articles in magazines and newspapers (clippings)

2. To find out people's opinions (opinions). Here you already know the topic discussed, what you
need is the author's opinion on the problem. For example, newspaper headings; You might just
read the first or final paragraph which usually contains the conclusions made by the author
(editor).

3. To get the important parts we need without reading them all. You need to look at all the
material to choose a good idea, but don't read it in full

1. To know the organization of writing, the order of the main ideas and the way they are arranged
in a unified mind and look for relationships between the reading passages. Maybe
chronologically, comparing, or other forms. Skimming is useful for choosing ingredients that
need to be studied and memorized. Skimming is useful for surveying books before reading, as
can be seen in the previous SQ3R description.

2. For refreshment that has been read, for example in preparing for an exam or before delivering
a lecture. This skimming is also referred to as a review.

Example

skimming to get the main idea from a textbook page so that it can decide whether the book is
useful and needs to be read more slowly and in detail.
