Scavenger Hunt: “The World of Magnets”

● Subject Area (QEP): Science and Technology

● Grade Level: 3 (cycle 2)

● Competencies (QEP):

Science and Technology Competency 3 To communicate in the

languages used in Science
and Technology

Cross Curricular Competency 1 To use information

Competencies

Competency 2 To solve problems

Competency 5 To adopt effective work

methods

Competency 6 To use information and

communication technologies
(ICT)

● Essential Knowledges

○ Material World (C. Forces and motion)

■ Recognizes the effects of magnetism on magnets (attraction and

repulsion)

■ Identifies situations in which magnets are used

● Objective of the Scavenger Hunt (Bloom’s Taxonomy)

○ Remembering: Students will be able to define what a magnet is.

○ Understanding: Students will explain what causes magnetism.

○ Applying: Students will choose an object with strong magnetic properties and

provide reason.
○ Analyzing: Students will compare the magnetic properties between hard and soft

magnets.

○ Evaluating: Students will select which objects are magnetic and which are not

using informational references.

○ Creating: Students will write another use for magnets and explain their

reasoning

The World of Magnets
What exactly are magnets? Together, let’s find out all the information we need in

the world of magnets and explore its powers! Visit the link from Britannica Kids to

start our scavenger hunt:

1. Visit the website above to start reading about magnets. Once all the sections

have been read, answer these questions:

a. What is a magnet?

_______________________________________________________________________________

b. How is magnetism created?

_______________________________________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________________________________

c. All objects in the universe are made up of units called atoms. What are atoms

made up of?

_______________________________________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________________________________

d. List the 3 forces of nature that relate to magnets.

_______________________________________________________________________________

e. What is the main difference between hard magnets and soft magnets? Can

you name the 4 metals that make great hard magnets?

_______________________________________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________________________________
f. After watching the video on the website, can you explain what a magnetic field

is? Also, why does a compass always point north?

_______________________________________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________________________________

g. In your classroom, choose an object you believe is a hard magnet and explain

why. (You may ask the teacher to test your object!)

_______________________________________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________________________________

h. BONUS: The North and South poles are considered ‘magnetic poles’. Looking

at the image of two magnets on the website, which poles attract and which

poles repel? Why?

2. TRUE or FALSE:

a. A magnet does not have to be touching an object to pull it. __________

b. A Lodestone is not a natural magnet. __________

c. Electricity can also create magnets. __________

d. Water, air, and wood have very strong magnetic properties. __________

e. North poles attract the south poles of other magnets. __________

f. Magnets strongly attract Iron, Steel, Nickel, and Silver __________

g. Earth is a giant magnet. __________

h. The compass needle always points toward the north pole. __________
3. Sort the objects into the correct box. You must decide which objects are magnetic

and which are not!

Hard Magnets Soft Magnets

Iron Pickaxe Pencil Scissors Steel Spoon

Eraser Pillow Key Paper

Paper clip Compass Plastic Bottle Soap

4. Based on all the information you read on magnets, you must:

Write about a NEW use of magnets that was not mentioned on the website and

explain your reasoning. You may use the website and internet research to write

about a new magnet!

(It cannot be a: compass, paper holder, credit card, automatic door, speaker)
