Lesson 1: Drafting Pattern for Household Linens

I Need to Know
Sewing is a life skill which can help you create something useful at
your home by simply sewing simple garments. Being able to sew enables us
to make the most out of existing items that need minor repairs for a longer
life span. Sewing is a sustainable hobby and helps you and your family save
money.It can help improve your self-esteem,especialy when learning a new
skill.

In this lesson, you are expected to:


1. drafts pattern for household linens (TLE6HE-0d-8);
2. follow the steps in drafting pattern of a simple table runner; and
3. observe safety precautions in drafting pattern for household linen.

Lesson Overview

What is Pattern Drafting?

Patter drafting is a pattern making process using the measurements


of different body areas to create basic patterns or blueprints of a garment. A
pattern is used as a guide when cutting fabric for garment making. It is the
most essential part in sewing before we proceed to our project.

A pattern paper is usually used in drafting a project like sewing a


blouse, a pair of pants or for household linens. These are items of cloth such
as tablecloths, sheets and pillowcases that are used at home which require
few measurements.
It enhance your motor skills,especially hand-eye-coordination.

For simple projects like a placemat, a table runner, or dish cloth, a


newspaper or a manila paper will serve the purpose.

Steps on How to Draft Pattern for Table Runner


1. A= Draw construction line mark point A as starting point.

2. AB = From point A measure 59 inches (150cms.) going to the right
and mark point B as the length of table runner

3. AC = From point A measure 12” upward and mark point C as the


width of table runner

4. D = Intersecting point of C and B

5. Add 1 inch for stitching line allowance using broken line

6. Cut pattern following the broken line as cutting line

Strictly following the suggested safety guidelines is one of the most
important parts you must remember in doing the project. Follow the
necessary instruction to reduce and eliminate accident or injury as much as
possible. Below is the list of suggested safety precautions in drafting
pattern.
Since sewing makes you remember specific steps, it works the brain
and keeps the mind clear,focused and active.
Safety Precautions in Drafting Pattern for Household Linen:
1. Do not draft when the light is very dim.
2. Do not use rusty needles and pins in your work.
3. When working, do not leave the scissors blades open.
4. Attach patterns to fabric with sharp ends of pins away from you.
5. Collect and dispose pieces of broken needles or pins, wrapped in
paper.
6. Keep the scissors in the case and out of reach of children.

8. When working closely, observe the direction of cutting. Do not cut in
motion.
9. Place the needles and pins in pincushion when not in use.
10. Have a sewing kit or box for you to place all sewing materials.

Always remember to follow safety and health practices while drafting

that might harm you or your health.

Lesson 2: Sewing Creative Household Linen

I Need to Know
After learning to draft pattern for table runner, you are ready now to
sew table runner project. Cotton is ideal clothing materials to be use for a
beginner like you.
Sewing will test your creativity.which improves the brain’s ability to
grow new brain cells and to promote mental growth.

In this lesson you are expected to:


1. sew creative and marketable household linens (table runner), to
augment family income; and
2. to assess the finished products as to the quality (using rubric).

Lesson Overview

Sewing Household Linen


Table runner is classified as household linen. Sewing table runner is
one of the easiest projects you can make. It is a long strip of cloth that is
place down in the middle of the table, in lengthways, for decoration, design
and to protect the surface from dishes. It adds color, texture that beautifies
your table in where you can enjoy your meal together with your family and
friends during occasions. Table runner can be marketed also to augment
family income.

These are example of Table Runners.

Before starting to sew, it is important to remember sewing practices


and safety habits:
1. Keep the room neat and clean before and after sewing.
2. Light should come from the left shoulder.
3. Do not sew when the light is very bright.
4. Sit erect on the chair while sewing.

5. Use scissors for cutting the thread. Do not cut the thread using your
teeth.
6. Use pincushion for pins and needles. Never take needles, pins in your
mouth and do not stick them in the clothes.
7. Do not hold scissors with side sharp up.
8. Keep your sewing materials after using in the sewing box.
How to Sew a Household Linen (Table Runner)

Materials:
Drafted pattern (measurement: 1.5-meter length and12 inches wide)
1.5-meter fabric (printed)
1 spool thread
Tailor’s chalk/pencil
Pins and needles

Tools:
Ruler
Tape measure
Scissors

Equipment:
Iron and ironing board

PROCEDURE: ILLUSTRATION:

1. Lay the fabric on the


table with the wrong side
up.

2. Lay the drafted pattern


on top of the fabric.

3. Pin the pattern on the


fabric to keep in place.

4. From the edges to the
pattern, mark with 1/2 -
inch allowance on the
fabric.

5. Cut the fabric all around


the pattern.

6. To form the hem, fold


the1/2- inch allowance in
ward. Then, pin.

7. Baste it all around.

8. Stitch/sew the hem by


hand all around.

9. Check each part and


remove hanging threads.

10. Press/iron the fabric.

Sewing is an important Life Skill and is the vehicle to teach self


confidence through skill building. It also keeps the mind of the learner stay
sharper and longer. It also encourages self-discipline, accomplishments, and
in stills pride which boosts mental health.
