Importance of Wellness and Staying Healthy in Online Learning Modality of Grade 11

Students at St. Anthony’s College.

Background of the Study

The global pandemic of the Coronavirus 2019 disease, which began in Wuhan, Hubei

Province, China in December 2019, has spread throughout the world, affecting almost every

country. Countries all across the world took immediate precautions to prevent the virus from

entering their borders and spreading. Because of the rapid spread of the coronavirus pandemic

across the country, St Anthony's College, as well as other schools, have discontinued face-to-face

classes and have transitioned to online learning modality. This unexpected shift affected schools,

teachers, and parents, but especially students who had to adjust to a new learning environment.

There are still uncertainties about whether this online modality is truly effective, given the many

disadvantages. This affects not only the academic performance of students but also their well-

being. Students are exposed to a variety of health risks, including those associated with the use of

computers and the internet.

With the rampant pandemic of COVID-19, an increasing number of people are acquiring

knowledge through online learning methods. (Allen & Seaman, 2017). With this in mind,

technology has been a great help for students. Not only is it reliable, but it is something that is

familiar to our generation. Helping students with their homework, and making learning much

more enjoyable and easier, especially when students can work at their own pace.

While new technologies are often expected to make work easier, they also involve the

development of new competencies. This change may, in itself, elicit an emotional response, and,

more importantly, emotion may impact the experience of online learning. Knowledge about the

impact of emotion on learning broadly is available, but not about emotion and online learning

(Cleveland-Innes & Campbell, 2012). Given how newly implemented this way of learning, there

aren't that many resources that could be found on the internet, especially in implementing online

learning in both primary and secondary education. The impact of online education on the

psychology and physiology of students has not been sufficiently studied, there is a risk of

deteriorating health, as well as a drop in the quality of education (Dazhdikov, 2020).

Path analysis revealed that social support provided by teachers was the only interindividual

factor that influenced students' engagement. Moreover, the sense of community was also a

significant direct predictor of online learners' engagement. Finally, self-efficacy functioned as a

mediator only between the sense of community and engagement (Vayre & Vonthron, 2016).

This study makes certain that students of St. Anthony's College and other schools undergoing

the online learning modality are assured of their wellness and good condition despite being

molded through hardships and a fluid study environment. The study is also designed to better

understand how the online learning modality affects the health risks students will encounter and

how we avoid these issues. The online learning modality seemed to be demanding and stressful

to some learners as there is a sudden shift from the traditional face-to-face learning modality.

Although online learning is just one of the various modalities mandated by the Department of

Education, some schools are having difficulty adjusting as well as the learners (Cabansag, V.,

Cabansag, P., & Soriano, R. 2020) That's why, it is a must for each student to look upon their

wellness, and make their health optimized, for a stable and good handling of their studies. We

believe that choosing Grade 11 students of St. Anthony’s College as our respondents would suit

this study the most, especially when they are exposed to a new environment and are forced to

adapt to these changes.

Statement of the Problem

This study is focused on understanding The Importance of Wellness and Staying Healthy in

an Online Learning Modality for Grade 11 Students. Specifically, this study is aimed at

answering the following questions:

1. What issues do Grade 11 Students go through in an Online Learning

environment?

2. Are Grade 11 Students well aware of the effects of Online learning? If so,

what are the coping strategies they do?

3. What will happen if students are overwhelmed by the complexity in

Online Learning, how greatly will this affect their health?

Review of Related Literature

Several factors contribute to students' academic difficulties in online education. According to

Arkorful and Abaidoo (2015), Online Learning is conducted in a remote and contemplative

manner, resulting in a lack of student interaction. In comparison with the contemporary mode of

education, e-learning might result in being less effective due to the absence of face-to-face

encounters with instructions or teachers (Corbeil, J. R., 2003). Because of the study of Dabbagh,

Nada, Helen Fake, and Zhicheng Zhang (2019), Online learning demands a higher degree of

independence among students than face-to-face classes, which can be difficult for academically

challenged students or students with non-traditional enrollment trajectories.

According to Aragon and Johnson, (2008), there are numerous reasons as to why students

struggle with online learning, including personal issues, instructor responsiveness and delivery in

online classes, computer, and internet issues, advising, class enrolment and cancellation

procedures, and perceived learning conduciveness of online courses. Furthermore a study

conducted by Drane et. al (2020) observed that students from more vulnerable backgrounds are

likely to experience persistent disadvantage through a range of barriers, for instance, long-term

educational disengagement, digital exclusion, poor technology management, and increased

psychosocial challenges Availability of resources is another factor that facilitates the success of

online education. Previous research has shown that one of the main challenges for implementing

a virtual mode of learning is an internet connection which has proven to be a significant issue for

students, especially those located in remote areas. (Al-Maskari,Al-Riyama, & Kunjumuhammed,

2021)

According to Alexandria Palmieri, (2020) students have trouble keeping up with online

learning, which is negatively impacting their mental health. Most students were already stressed

before online learning implementation, but today they are significantly more burdened. Many

aspects of online learning are problematic, but the biggest issues for students include social

interaction, engagement in class, and the overall stress of dealing with online learning

furthermore a large aspect of education is the social connection students have with other

students, as well as teachers and other faculty members, which students have when they are in a

conventional setting. When students undertake online learning, they do not have that interaction.

According to the study of Alyoubi, Halstead, Zambelli, Z, Dimitriou (2021), students in

undergraduate programs had high levels of anxiety, depression, insomnia, and low levels of

resilience throughout the pandemic, whereas other studies found that students and the general

population had moderate levels of depression, stress, and anxiety symptoms. Students are bound

by different emotionally demanding states, such as homework, assignments, quizzes,

examinations, and deadlines, which are connected that encompass their psychological intentions

(Tyng, Amin, Saad, and Malik, 2017).

According to Tuominen–Soini et. al (2012) study, well-being is an important indicator for

various educational outcomes and because adolescents’ lives revolve mostly around their studies,

it is reasonable to define well-being in the context of education hence, academic well-being. In

addition, Selligman, Gillham Reivich, and Linkins (2009) claim that well-being is an important

concept in positive psychology and is needed to be seen as a core element of education.

Gillis and Krull, (2020) observed that students experienced barriers to learning due to the

pandemic, including distractions, increased anxiety, and feeling less motivated. Furthermore,

Aristovnik et. al (2020), found that students experienced boredom, anxiety, and frustration due to

the adoption of particular hygienic behaviors that prevented them from performing simple daily

practices such as shaking hands and getting in touch with their family members and friends.

With the current coronavirus pandemic, numerous students are discovering that school is not

only important to just learn, but it is also necessary for social interaction, which clarifies why

various understudies report missing face-to-face cooperation with their peers and teachers. For

certain students, this absence of social collaboration can start sentiments of seclusion. (Robinson,

2020) We all know this year is going to test everyone’s limits and endurance in class when

learning, that is why it’s important to adapt to the situation sooner than later. As the school year

progresses, many teachers hope students have more opportunities to befriend and learn about

their peers in a virtual environment. (Robinson, 2020)

Majority of the total population will be randomly selected for inclusion in the survey. All grade

11 students are eligible to be part of the survey.

Questionnaires and Measurements

Socio-demographic data includes name (optional), age, and sex of the student

respondents. Age will be defined randomly and sex will be defined as male and female. The final

questionnaire aims to test how knowledgeable grade 11 students in St. Anthony’s College are in

their health in an online learning environment.

The questionnaire will be answerable by “Strongly Agree”, “Agree”, “Undecided”,

“Disagree”, “Strongly Disagree”, and “Yes” or “No”.

Data Management and Analysis

In order to analyze data, descriptive statistics such as Mean, Standard Deviation and

Variance will be used. The mean will be used to determine the arithmetic average of the scores,

calculated by adding all the scores and dividing the total number of scores. The standard

deviation will be used to tell us the variability, or spread, of a distribution. The variance will be

used to determine the measurement of the spread between numbers in a data set. T-test will be

used to test hypotheses.
