First, language is indeed a tool for communication because it is what we use to

language we may have the capability to influence or persuade other

people/community.

1. Language, as a tool for communication, can change the society. - TRUE. Language is

indeed a tool for communication as that is what we use to understand each other’s point of

view on certain things. It can also change the society since language can be really powerful and

reliable or true, such examples are; fake news and online scams.

4.Globalization, through communication, distorts the sovereignty of a nation. - FALSE. I don not

MODULE 5B

DANIEL JOSH D. MERCADO

Activity:

Come up with a list of countries in which English is not a native language but is

used as an international or intranational language by people living there. List

the differences in their greetings and share your list results to your classmates.

Singapore - Ni hao

Norway - Hallo

Denmark - Hej!

South Africa - Howzit

Analysis:

1. How do they greet their parents? Their friends? Their supervisor? Do their

ways of greeting people vary? Why?

- The mentioned countries greet their parents in a respectful or disciplined way,

they greet their friends in a way that may sound more quaint or slangy, and

they greet their supervisor by exerting confidence and values at the same time.

I think their way of greetings are quite the same, they may only vary when it

comes to what is their relationship with a certain person.

2. Have you ever experienced difficulty in transacting or communicating in

English with Filipinos?

- Yes, sometimes I do find it difficult to communicate with fellow Filipinos who

speaks English, since English is not my first language I tend to doubt myself

more on vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar, for example, if I messed up

some words or sentences, because Filipinos can sometimes judge and laugh

instead of educating or correcting your flaws.

does each of these terms fall.

A. Look for one news report written in Philippine English and another news

report in any of the following: African English, Thai English, Indonesian English,

Malaysian English, Singaporean English. Compare the two news reports in

terms of their lexis, grammar, and spelling.

- I compared the Philippine English article and the Indonesian English Article.

Based on what I have read in a Philippine-made English article is that, the

journalist/s writing is very wise in using or picking certain words to put, the

grammar is understandable, and you can almost find no issues with the

spelling. On the other hand, the Indonesian article was actually better than I

expected, some of problems are; certain parts on the article was lacking some

punctuation marks which makes the readers confuse and the choice of words

are not that good, but overall it did manage to deliver information.
B. Answer one question only.

Discuss what does the mixing of local languages with English accomplish for

users of that English variety.

- The Philippines would be one of the best examples, where Americans first

arrived in 1898 and have remained for many years. There is an unique English

style that differs from that spoken in English-speaking nations. Filipinos'

utilization of English is distinctly Filipino, it might be difficult for Americans to

comprehend at times, so I think what accomplish mixing of local languages

with English is that it showcases the culture through innovation of usage of

words or phrases.
