Essay 1 Reflection

Since I took English 1301 very recently, I was able to carry some of the information that I

learned in that class over to this one. It’s something that made the writing process for this essay a

bit easier. Primarily, I learned all the MLA format stuff in 1301, so I didn’t really struggle when

it came to that sort of stuff. I simply set up the paper in that same format and went straight to

writing. Something else I managed to learn was to have the ideas for an essay in mind so that I

can think them over through with a lot of spare time. Despite this, there were certainly some

things that I came to learn much more recently in this class. What I found most interesting was

that I can add my own journal in the specific case of this essay in which I did most of the

research.

There weren’t really any specific things that I learned in English 1301 that I found

irrelevant when writing the first essay. If there were things that I found useless in that class I

have most likely already forgotten them and erased them from my mind, as strange as that may

sound. When it comes to other classes, I suppose I don’t really need to know what drives supply

and demand for me to write this essay. I’m sure it’s useful for other things but I don’t see myself

needing to know that sort of stuff in order to write this specific essay.

Of course, I do think that writing this essay serves as good practice, I’m sure that I will

eventually have to write another similar essay or conduct some sort of research in a similar

format. I’m not exactly sure when, but I do think that it’s something I will eventually have to do.

I’m supposed to do some more research papers too, so I believe that practicing how I cite

specific articles, and such can be useful in a variety of classes.

I don’t believe I will need to do any sort of similar research writing in classes such as

Algebra as there is not much writing when it comes to mathematics. It mostly seems to be

numbers so I don’t believe there is much I can learn from writing this essay that can help me in

mathematics classes.

I believe the thing that made writing this essay so different from earlier essays is the

focus on myself conducting the experiment. Along with that, I was not allowed to refer to myself

in the first person which was a bit confusing at times. It is certainly something that I was not

used to, but I believe that it can help me adapt to other forms of writing in the future. I also had

to find some sources that were backing up the research that I had found so that was a bit

frustrating at times.

It seems that my greatest weakness is that my sentences were far too repetitive in some

cases. Specifically, in one paragraph I kept starting my sentences with “the subject” as I was

describing the routine of the experiment. It was very difficult for me to not use “the subject” as I

couldn’t really think of any other way to refer to myself in the third person while at the same

time sounding right. This is something that I struggled with greatly, but I don’t think it was such

a massive weakness as it is only something I encountered while writing this essay. I had a few

other weaknesses in 1301 which primarily came from paragraph structure. Since then, however, I

believe that I have improved on that specific issue.

The most difficult part of this essay was certainly conducting the experiment in the time

that I was given with no setbacks. I had to stay on schedule and stay in my room for the entire

day, so it was a bit difficult when there were other things I had to do. It was also a bit difficult to

get the necessary temperature in the room during the experiment. Due to insulation, it takes a

while for the temperature to change in the room completely, so I instead decided to have a few

days in between the sections of the experiment in order to get the conditions for the experiment

just right. Other than that, I don’t think there were many issues when it came to writing the essay

itself.
