INTRODUCTION

⊹ The story, “Lost Spring” deals with the deplorable condition of poor
children who get forced to miss the simple joyful moments of
childhood because of their socio-economic conditions. These children
are not given the opportunity of schooling and are compelled to start
working early in life. The author Anees Jung strives hard to eliminate
child labour through her book. She propagates the education of
children and enforcement of strict laws against child labour by the
government. The message is to put an end to child exploitation and let
all children enjoy their days of the spring and joy .
⊹ Characters of the Lost Spring Saheb-e-Alam: A rag picker Mukesh:
Son of a bangle maker

7
THEME OF THE “ LOST SPRING”
⊹ The theme of the chapter is about perpetual poverty of certain groups of people and the traditions which make
poor children live a life of exploitation. They are stuck in a vicious cycle. The two stories narrated by the author
describe the poor state of street children who are forced into labour early in their lives instead of going to
school. The biased behaviour of society adds to the sufferings of these poor people.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
1) HARDIK BHARDWAJ

⊹ There are so many things I learnt whilst working in a team. I will highlight them here. Building up my interpersonal skills example, effective
communication. This is very crucial whilst working within a team. You should be able to walk through your problems and solutions with
someone else and the person be able to get an overview of the situation, Ability to collaborate with others is also one of the benefits you
derive from working with others in a group , Discover the knowledge gap between you and your group/team members. Quite often, a lot of
people have more understanding or expertise of a subject area than you do. This gives you the opportunity to learn from them and also for
them to learn from you.

10
2) AAKARSH CHOUDHARY
⊹ After completing this project I realized that being in a group
really helps us tackle more complex problems than they could
on their own. It helps us share diverse perspectives. we
pooled ideas and skills in this project .The point of group work
is that being social significantly enhances learning. Not only do
you have to hear others' perspectives, you also have to
compare, contrast and integrate their perspectives into your
own thinking. Perhaps someone else's perspective will change
your mind or show weaknesses in your own ideas.

11
3)UTKARSH DESHRAJ
⊹ I learned so many things through this project from interacting
with new students to knowing much about child exploitation.
Also I would like to mention some important points about this
chapter and the author below : The author Anees Jung strives
hard to eliminate child labour through her book. She
propagates the education of children and enforcement of strict
laws against child labour by the government. The message is
to put an end to child exploitation and let all children enjoy
their days of the spring and joy.

4) MAHIMA GARG

⊹ This group project taught me so many things and lead me to

explore new aspects like team work and innovation . We took
into account everyone’s ideas and brought them into this
project to make it authentic . It indeed is a challenge
sometimes to adjust but then one realizes the benefits to work
as a group. The burden gets low , work is efficient when done
on time and in harmony . Sometimes ideas may differ and
arguments might happen but if handled with patience
everything can be resolved . I learned these new values from
this particular task.

13
5) KARTIK KAUSHIK
⊹ This group project made me understood the importance of team work and working in a group . One can learn
new things , ideas and explore new stuff . Its difficult to understand someone else’s perspective but with some
patience you understand their ideas and tackle any problems maturely .

12 june marks the World Day Against Child Labour under the theme “Universal Social
Protection to End Child Labour.” 12 JunOn this day, the ILO, together with its constituents and
partners, is calling for increased investment in social protection systems and schemes to
establish solid social protection floors and protect children from child labour.

16

Let them earn knowledge,
not money.

17
RESOURCES
⊹ According to data from Census 2011, the number of child labourers in
India is 10.1 million of which 5.6 million are boys and 4.5 million are
girls. A total of 152 million children – 64 million girls and 88 million boys
– are estimated to be in child labour globally, accounting for almost one
in ten of all children worldwide.
⊹ Despite rates of child labour declining over the last few years, children
are still being used in some severe forms of child labour such as
bonded labour, child soldiers, and trafficking. Across India child
labourers can be found in a variety of industries: in brick kilns, carpet
weaving, garment making, domestic service, food and refreshment
services (such as tea stalls), agriculture, fisheries and mining. Children
are also at risk of various other forms of exploitation including sexual
exploitation and production of child pornography, including online

18
GOVERNMENT MEASURES AND IMPACT
UPON THE SITUATION

⊹ Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act(1986) to prohibit the

engagement of children in certain employments and to regulate the
conditions of work of children in certain other employments.
⊹ Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2016 : The
Amendment Act completely prohibits the employment of children
below 14 years .
⊹ Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act2000 and

22
REPORT
⊹ Child Labour means the employment of children in any kind of work
that hampers their physical and mental development, deprives them of
their basic educational and recreational requirements. A large number
of children are compelled to work in various hazardous and non-
hazardous activities such as in the agriculture sector, glass factories,
carpet industry, brass industries, matchbox factories, and as domestic
help. It is a blot on our society and speaks immensely about the
inability of our society to provide a congenial environment for the
growth and development of children. People believe that child labor
does not affect them, not realizing that the Persian rugs they put their
feet on are made by suffering children in a dark, small room. They
don’t realize the soccer balls that their children are kicking around
outside are made by children themselves, who slave away for little or
no pay at all. In 1999, ap-proximately 250 million children are
employed or enslaved across the world for little or no money at all.

23
CONTINUED….
⊹ Imagine how these child workers are depraved from experiences the joys of
childhood. These poor children never get to play outside or enjoy a simple game.
Childhood is the greatest and happiest period of everyone’s life, during which
one learns about the basic strategy of life from parents, loved ones and
nature.Child labour interferes with the proper growth and development of
children in all aspects, mentally, physically, socially and intellectually. Childhood
is the birthright of everyone, which he should live under the love and care of his
parents, but this illegal act of child labour forces a child to live life like a grown-
up.Children should be provided opportunities to develop in a healthy manner and
in a free and respectful environment in which they are protected against
exploitation of their childhood and adolescence.Letting children to get involved in
age inappropriate activities leads to many bad influences on the child. Some
children suffer a bad childhood because their parents create a hostile
environment for them, some others are unprivileged because they cannot afford
good education and a basic livelihood, and some curse their own being as they
are handicapped off their very existence by a section of anti-social elements in
the country.

24
……..
⊹ Life does not offer a smooth ride at every stage. It is said that
childhood is the golden period of one’s life and we cannot afford to get
it back whenever we want it back . Children should be allowed to play
with their friends and make their childhood memorable . Child labor, as
a deadly evil, deprives children of a quality childhood as children
engage themselves in hazardous work areas like mines and industries
for their livelihood and to generate income for their family . If children
start working at such an early age they can in no way enjoy their
childhood or have pleasant memories of a good childhood. If young
children are forced to work at their tender ages in mines and
industries, they are prone to various health issues and hazards, while
they won’t even be having stamina to face mental and physical
problems . Working in mines and factories can lead to serious
respiratory problems and can become lifelong victims of such dreaded
diseases.

25
…….
⊹ if children work in the mines and industries for their livelihood and to help
their parents and siblings for generating money, they obviously cannot go
to school for their education.Education can help them to be self
dependent and walk on their own feet in the society. Sadly, if we are not
educated and are unskilled, we would not be employed by any good hirer
and have to lead a life full of struggles.Every problem has a possible
solution. Yes and even a big menace like child labour can be stopped and
prevented in a large country like India. It all depends on changing
mindsets and evaluating situations from time to time.Strict enforcement’s
of laws together with rapid action committees to bring about execution of
laws will be torch bearers for a better tomorrow and can throw light in the
aspect of changing many innocent lives.f free education for one and all is
made mandatory by the government, then to some extent it helps to
check child labour.Children from poor families are most likely to get
involved in child labour cases. They are exploited by rich and influential
people for managing their household work.

26
……
⊹ It’s not right on the part of affluent people to bring in helpless people from their
communities and involve them in age inappropriate chores. It goes against laws
and if we also take up initiatives to empower them enough, then they cannot be
exploited by such persons*.*Indian Government on their part has done a
fascinating work in carrying on their mission of eliminating child labour from
India. They have made strict rules such as Factory act and mines act which
prohibit any children to work in such hazardous environment. Plus they have
also made rules for free education and mid-day meals in various states of India
which has currently garnered an overwhelming response from all sections of
society.*It is time to consign child labour to the history books and to allow all
children to realise their rights*. Child labour is a fact of life for children and it is
an issue that effect of all us in a country.
