PORTAL FRAMED STRUCTURE.

Portal frames: Are generally low rise structure comprising columns,beams, purlins and horizontal or
pitched rafters connected by Moment resisting connection.

COMPONENTS OF PORTAL FRAMED STRUCTURES.


1.Columns.Are vertically members in portal framed structure which receive loads from the Beams that is
from the top roofing structures and covering materials and sending the received loads to the base i.e
Footings.

2. Beams. Are the horizontal members that receive the loading from the Rafters and all loadings from
top structures that is purlins and the roofing covering materials.
3. Rafters. Is an inclined horizontal members normally at the top and they Carry the purlins that used to
attach the roofing covering materials.
4.Purlins. Are the horizontal members which lies on the top of the rafters and it's main function is to
attach the Roofing covering materials also purlins in Portal framed structures are the ones on the sides
of the portal frames which provides attachment of the side covering materials.
5.French Angle. Are connecting members which are normally inclined/Angled and normally connecting
between two members i.e Beams and Columns, Rafters and Beams.
6.Bracing. Are connecting members which usually inserted in crossing ways too support the lateral
loadings and bracing are normally inserted in pairs so as to give equal lateral supports.
7. Sag Road. Are purely vertical members which connecting between the side purlins and provide series
of inter connection from the top side purlins to bottom side purlins.
