Computer and Mobile Devices: Evaluating Options for Home and Work
Introduction:
- A mobile computer is a portable personal computer, designed so that a user easily can carry
it from place to place
- A personal computer (PC) is a mobile computer or desktop that can perform all of its input,
processing, output, and storage activities by itself and is intended to be used by one person
at a time
- A laptop, also called a notebook computer, is a thin, lightweight mobile computer with a
screen in its lid and a keyboard in its base
- A tablet is a thin, lightweight mobile computer that has a touchscreen
- A hand-held computer is a computer small enough to fit in one hand
o Usually used by warehouse employees to take inventory and check supplies
- Stick computer is a small computer which usually is the same size as, or a little larger than, a
USB flash drive
o Can be connected to an HDMI port on a TV or a computer monitor
- A desktop, or desktop computer, is a personal computer designed to be in a stationary
location, where all of its components fit on or under a desk or table
- A server is a computer dedicated to providing one or more services to other computers or
devices on a network
o Rack server
Mounted on standardized racks reaching up to 10 feet in height allowing the
data center to efficiently deploy dozens of rack-mounted servers
o Blade server
Small circuit boards that act as servers within their server enclosure. An
excellent choice for high-processing power in a dense environment
o Tower server
Comes with the capacity for high-optimization and customization allowing
organizations to match the server configuration to their needs
Table: Dedicated Servers
- Virtualization is the practice of sharing or pooling computing resources, such as servers and
storage devices
o Server virtualization uses software to enable a physical server to emulate the
hardware and computing capabilities of one or more servers, known as virtual
servers.
- A server farm is a network of several servers together in a single location
- A mainframe is a large, expensive, powerful server that can handle hundreds or thousands
of connected users simultaneously
Terminals
- A terminal is a computer, usually with limited processing power, that enables users to send
data to and/or receive information from a server, or host computer
- A thin client is a terminal that looks like a desktop but has limited capabilities and
components
- Most retail stores use a POST terminal to record purchases, process credit or debit cards,
and update inventory
o Many grocery stores offer self-service checkouts, where consumers use POS
terminals to scan purchases, scan their store or saver card and coupons, and then
pay for the goods.
- An ATM (Automated Teller Machine) is a self-service banking terminal that connects to a
host computer through a network
o An ATM allows customers to access their bank accounts
- A self-service kiosk is a free-standing terminal that usually has a touch screen for user
interaction
Type Typical Service Provided
Financial Kiosk Pay bills, add money to prepaid cards and phone plans, and perform
other financial activities.
Photo Kiosk Print photos from digital images. Some allow editing of digital photos.
Users may print directly at the kiosk or may send an order to a photo lab
to be printed.
Ticket Kiosk Print tickets. Located in airports, amusement parks, movie theaters,
rental companies, and train stations.
Vending Kiosk Dispense item after payment is received. Examples include DVD rentals
and license plate renewals.
Visitor Kiosk: Manage Located in businesses, police stations, schools, hospitals, and other areas
and track visitors upon where access is controlled or registration is required.

Supercomputers
- A supercomputer is the fastest, most powerful computer – and the most expensive
o Capable of processing many trillions of instructions in a single second
o Can process more than quadrillion instructions in a single second
Cloud Computing
- Cloud computing refers to an environment that provides resources and services accessed via
the internet
o Delivery of computing services including servers, storage, databases, networking,
software, analytics, and intelligence over the internet or cloud to offer faster
innovation, flexible resources, and economies of scale
Mobile Devices
Game Devices
Embedded Computers
o
- A USB port, short for universal serial bus port, can connect up to 127 different peripheral
devices together with a single connector
o An industry-standard for short-distance, digital data communications
o Can also supply electric power across the cable to devices that need it
o Instead of connecting peripheral devices directly to ports on a mobile computer,
some mobile users prefer the flexibility of port replicators and docking stations
o Docking stations often are used with tablets and other mobile computers, providing
connections to peripheral devices
o Instead of connecting computers and mobile devices to peripheral devices with a
cable, some peripheral devices use wireless communications technologies
Bluetooth
Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity)
NFC (Near Field Communication)
Enables short ranged communication between compatible devices,
requires at least one transmitting device and another to receive it
Allows user to transfer small payloads of data from NFC to Android
or Android to Android
Protecting Hardware
- To help reduce the chances of theft, companies and schools use a variety of security
measures
o Physical access controls
o Alarm system
o Physical security devices
o Security or device-tracking app
o Require identification
Pointing Devices
- A pointer is a small symbol on the screen whose location and shape change as a user moves
a pointing device
- A mouse is a pointing device that fits under the palm of your hand comfortably
o Optical mouse has buttons
o Touch mouse often has no buttons
- A touchpad is a small, flat, rectangular pointing device that is sensitive to pressure and
motion
o It can be an external device but most of the time it is built-in most of today’s laptops
- A trackball is a stationary pointing device with a ball on its top or side
Touchscreen
- A display device that allows the user to interact with the computer by using their finger or
stylus pen. A useful alternative to a mouse or keyboard for navigating a GUI (Graphical User
Interface)
o A touchscreen is a touch-sensitive display
o Used in computer and laptop displays, smartphones, tablets, cash registers, and
information kiosks
o Some touchscreens use a grid of infrared beams to sense the presence of a finger
instead of utilizing touch-sensitive input
Pen Input
- With pen input, you touch a stylus or digital pen on a flat surface to write, draw, or make
selections
o Mostly used on graphics tablet (digitizer), smartphones, and signature capture pads
o Unlike real pens, styluses have plastic or felt tip depending on the purpose or
functionality
- A graphics tablet, also called a digitizer, is an electronic plastic board that detects and
converts movement of a style or digital pen into signals that are sent to the computer
o Can be used in replacement of a mouse
- With motion input, sometimes called gesture recognition, users can guide on-screen
elements using air gestures
o Air gestures include the movement of the body or the hand-held given device in air
- Voice input is the process of entering input by speaking into a microphone
- Voice recognition, also called speech recognition, is the computer or mobile device’s
capability of distinguishing spoken words
- Audio input is the process of entering any sound into the computer such as speech, music,
and sound effects
- Music production software allows users to record, compose, mix, and edit music and sounds
o FL Studio
- Video input is the process of capturing full-motion images and storing them on a computer
or mobile device’s storage medium
- A webcam is a type of DV (Digital Video) camera that enables a user to:
o Capture video and still images
o Send email messages with video attachments
o Broadcast live images or video over the Internet
o Conduct videoconferences
o Make video calls
- A videoconference is a meeting between two or more geographically separated people
o To save on travel expenses, many large businesses use videoconferencing
