Introduction:

Computers and Mobile Devices

Types of computers and mobile devices include:

- Laptops, tablets, and desktops


- Servers and terminals
- Smartphones, digital cameras, e-book readers, portable and digital media players and
wearable devices
- Game devices
- Embedded computers

Mobile Computers and Desktops

- A mobile computer is a portable personal computer, designed so that a user easily can carry
it from place to place
- A personal computer (PC) is a mobile computer or desktop that can perform all of its input,
processing, output, and storage activities by itself and is intended to be used by one person
at a time
- A laptop, also called a notebook computer, is a thin, lightweight mobile computer with a
screen in its lid and a keyboard in its base
- A tablet is a thin, lightweight mobile computer that has a touchscreen
- A hand-held computer is a computer small enough to fit in one hand
o Usually used by warehouse employees to take inventory and check supplies
- Stick computer is a small computer which usually is the same size as, or a little larger than, a
USB flash drive
o Can be connected to an HDMI port on a TV or a computer monitor
- A desktop, or desktop computer, is a personal computer designed to be in a stationary
location, where all of its components fit on or under a desk or table
- A server is a computer dedicated to providing one or more services to other computers or
devices on a network
o Rack server
 Mounted on standardized racks reaching up to 10 feet in height allowing the
data center to efficiently deploy dozens of rack-mounted servers
o Blade server
 Small circuit boards that act as servers within their server enclosure. An
excellent choice for high-processing power in a dense environment
o Tower server
 Comes with the capacity for high-optimization and customization allowing
organizations to match the server configuration to their needs

- Virtualization is the practice of sharing or pooling computing resources, such as servers and
storage devices
o Server virtualization uses software to enable a physical server to emulate the
hardware and computing capabilities of one or more servers, known as virtual
servers.
- A server farm is a network of several servers together in a single location
- A mainframe is a large, expensive, powerful server that can handle hundreds or thousands
of connected users simultaneously

Terminals

- A terminal is a computer, usually with limited processing power, that enables users to send
data to and/or receive information from a server, or host computer
- A thin client is a terminal that looks like a desktop but has limited capabilities and
components
- Most retail stores use a POST terminal to record purchases, process credit or debit cards,
and update inventory
o Many grocery stores offer self-service checkouts, where consumers use POS
terminals to scan purchases, scan their store or saver card and coupons, and then
pay for the goods.
- An ATM (Automated Teller Machine) is a self-service banking terminal that connects to a
host computer through a network
o An ATM allows customers to access their bank accounts
- A self-service kiosk is a free-standing terminal that usually has a touch screen for user
interaction
Type Typical Service Provided
Financial Kiosk Pay bills, add money to prepaid cards and phone plans, and perform
other financial activities.
Photo Kiosk Print photos from digital images. Some allow editing of digital photos.
Users may print directly at the kiosk or may send an order to a photo lab
to be printed.
Ticket Kiosk Print tickets. Located in airports, amusement parks, movie theaters,
rental companies, and train stations.
Vending Kiosk Dispense item after payment is received. Examples include DVD rentals
and license plate renewals.
Visitor Kiosk: Manage Located in businesses, police stations, schools, hospitals, and other areas
and track visitors upon where access is controlled or registration is required.

- A supercomputer is the fastest, most powerful computer – and the most expensive
o Capable of processing many trillions of instructions in a single second
o Can process more than quadrillion instructions in a single second

Cloud Computing

- Cloud computing refers to an environment that provides resources and services accessed via
the internet
o Delivery of computing services including servers, storage, databases, networking,
software, analytics, and intelligence over the internet or cloud to offer faster
innovation, flexible resources, and economies of scale

Mobile Devices

- A smartphone is an Internet-capable phone that usually also includes a calendar, an address


book, a calculator, a notepad, games, browser, and numerous other apps
o Many smartphones have touch screens. Instead of or in addition to an on-screen
keyboard, some have built-in mini keyboard on the front of the phone or a keyboard
that slides in and out from behind the phone
- Short Message Service (SMS)
o Most widely used messaging service
o Can send a message of up to 160 characters to another device
o Longer messages are usually split-up into multiple messages

- Multimedia Message Service (MMS)
o Can send a message including pictures, videos, and audio content to another device
o Requires a data plan or internet connection

- A digital camera is a mobile device that allows users to take photos and store the
photographed images digitally
o Many current models can capture sound or video in addition to still-images
o These stored images can be uploaded to a computer immediately or stored in a
camera for to be uploaded to a computer or printed later.
o Images may also be archived on a photographic compact disk or an external hard
disk

 SLR (Single Lens Reflex) camera
 SLR Digital cameras have lenses and other attachments, whereas
the lenses on point-and-shoot cameras are built into the device.
Many smartphones also have built-in digital cameras
- How a Digital Camera might work
o Step 1:
 Point to the image to photograph and take the photo. Light passes into the
lens of the camera
o Step 2:
 The image is focused on a chip called a charge-coupled device (CCD)
o Step 3:
 The CCD generates an analog signal that represents the image
o Step 4:
 The analog signal is converted to a digital signal by an analog-to-digital
converter (ADC)
o Step 5:
 A processor in the camera adjusts the quality of the image and usually
stores the digital photo on media inserted in the camera
- Resolution is the number of horizontal and vertical pixels in a display
o Used as a metric to measure the quality of monitors, printers, digital images, and
various other hardware or software technologies
o A pixel is the smallest element in an electronic image
- A portable media player is a mobile device on which you can store, organize, and play or
view digital media
o An umbrella term for a variety of hand-held devices that playback audio, video or
both
o Can also serve as a portable photo album for still images such as GIF and JPEG
o Some portable media players have touch screens; others have touch-sensitive pads
or buttons that enable you to access your media library
- A digital media player or streaming media player is a device, typically used in a home, that
streams digital media from a computer or network to a television, projector, or some other
entertainment device
- An e-book reader (short for electronic book reader), or e-reader, is a mobile device that is
used primarily for reading e-books and other digital publications
o E-book readers enable you to read e-books and other digital publications such as
newspapers and magazines
- A wearable device or wearable is a small, mobile computing device designed to be worn by
a consumer
o Three popular wearable devices include activity trackers, smartwatches, and smart
glasses

Game Devices

- A game console is a mobile computing device designed for single-player or multiplayer


video games
- A hand-held game device is a small mobile device that contains a screen, speakers, controls,
and game console all in one unit
- Game controllers include gamepads, joysticks and wheels, dance pads, and a variety of
motion-sensing controllers
o Gamers have a variety of ways to direct movement and actions of on-screen objects

Embedded Computers

- An embedded computer is a special-purpose computer that functions as a component in a


larger product
o A microprocessor base system that specially designed to perform a specific function
and belong in a larger system
o Comes with a combination of hardware and software to achieve a unique task to
withstand different conditions
o Commonly used in

 Home automation devices
 Automobiles
 Process controllers and robotics
 Computer devices and office machines
o Some of the embedded computers designed to improve your safety, security, and
performance in today’s vehicles

Ports and Connections

- A port is the point at which a peripheral device attaches to or communicates with a


computer or mobile device so that the peripheral device can send data to or receive
information from the computer or mobile device
o Most computers and mobile devices have ports so that you can connect the
computer or device to peripherals
- A connector joins a cable to a port
o A connector at one end of a cable attaches to a port on the computer or mobile
device, and a connector at the other end of the cable attaches to a port on the
peripheral device

- A USB port, short for universal serial bus port, can connect up to 127 different peripheral
devices together with a single connector
o An industry-standard for short-distance, digital data communications
o Can also supply electric power across the cable to devices that need it
o Instead of connecting peripheral devices directly to ports on a mobile computer,
some mobile users prefer the flexibility of port replicators and docking stations
o Docking stations often are used with tablets and other mobile computers, providing
connections to peripheral devices
o Instead of connecting computers and mobile devices to peripheral devices with a
cable, some peripheral devices use wireless communications technologies

Pointing Devices

- A pointer is a small symbol on the screen whose location and shape change as a user moves
a pointing device
- A mouse is a pointing device that fits under the palm of your hand comfortably
o Optical mouse has buttons
o Touch mouse often has no buttons
- A touchpad is a small, flat, rectangular pointing device that is sensitive to pressure and
motion
o It can be an external device but most of the time it is built-in most of today’s laptops
- A trackball is a stationary pointing device with a ball on its top or side
Touchscreen

- A display device that allows the user to interact with the computer by using their finger or
stylus pen. A useful alternative to a mouse or keyboard for navigating a GUI (Graphical User
Interface)
o A touchscreen is a touch-sensitive display
o Used in computer and laptop displays, smartphones, tablets, cash registers, and
information kiosks
o Some touchscreens use a grid of infrared beams to sense the presence of a finger
instead of utilizing touch-sensitive input

Pen Input

- With pen input, you touch a stylus or digital pen on a flat surface to write, draw, or make
selections
o Mostly used on graphics tablet (digitizer), smartphones, and signature capture pads
o Unlike real pens, styluses have plastic or felt tip depending on the purpose or
functionality
- A graphics tablet, also called a digitizer, is an electronic plastic board that detects and
converts movement of a style or digital pen into signals that are sent to the computer
o Can be used in replacement of a mouse

Motion, Voice, and Video Input

- With motion input, sometimes called gesture recognition, users can guide on-screen
elements using air gestures
o Air gestures include the movement of the body or the hand-held given device in air
- Voice input is the process of entering input by speaking into a microphone
- Voice recognition, also called speech recognition, is the computer or mobile device’s
capability of distinguishing spoken words
- Audio input is the process of entering any sound into the computer such as speech, music,
and sound effects
- Music production software allows users to record, compose, mix, and edit music and sounds

- Video input is the process of capturing full-motion images and storing them on a computer
or mobile device’s storage medium
- A webcam is a type of DV (Digital Video) camera that enables a user to:
o Capture video and still images
o Send email messages with video attachments
o Broadcast live images or video over the Internet
o Conduct videoconferences
o Make video calls
- A videoconference is a meeting between two or more geographically separated people
o To save on travel expenses, many large businesses use videoconferencing

What is Output?

- Output is data that has been processed into a useful form


o The four types of output are
 Text
 Graphics
 Audio
 Video

Displays

- A display visually conveys text, graphics, and video information


- A monitor is a display that is packaged as a separate peripheral device
o Cathode Ray Tube Monitors (CRT), This monitor applies CRT technology which is
used commonly on manufacturing of television screens
o Liquid Crystal Display Monitors (LCD), incorporates one of the most advance
technologies available today. LCD monitors are flat-panel, slightly curved displays
which makes use of light-emitting diodes for backlighting instead of Cold Cathode
Fluorescent Lighting (CCFL) used in LCDs
o Light-Emitting Diode Monitors (LED) are said to use much lesser power than CRT and
LCD and are considered far more environmentally friendly
