Reading
Read the following texts about machinery.
Answer these questions.
1. What must marine machinery be capable of?

2. Why may essential equipment be duplicated?

3. What is the purpose of having isolation valves?

Meaning from context.

There are some highlighted words in the previous reading. Get their meanings and
write the number on the corresponding list of synonyms provided below.

Language in use
Complete the following passage about engine performance and maintenance. Use the
words in the box.
Be capable of
 Having the ability or quality necessary to do or achieve a specified thing.
 Able to achieve efficiently whatever one has to do; competent.

The adjective capable is never followed by an infinitive; instead ing verb ending
must be used. For example:
1. Marine machinery must be capable of withstanding the marine environment.
2. Deck members are capable of handling deck machinery.
Now, write your own sentences.
1.- ________________________________________________________________
2.- ________________________________________________________________
3.- ________________________________________________________________

Be able to
 Used for saying that it is possible for someone to do something.

Able is always followed by an infinitive. For example:

1. I am able to act as fast as possible in an emergency situation.
2. Engine members are able to withstand the hard conditions of the engine room.
Now, write your own sentences.
1.- ________________________________________________________________
2.- ________________________________________________________________
3.- ________________________________________________________________

Forms such as have been able to and will be able to are sometimes considered as
tenses of the verb can. For example:
1. She has been able to manage the situation promptly.
2. The cadets will be able to perform all the duties when requested.
Now, write your own sentences.
1.- ________________________________________________________________
2.- ________________________________________________________________
3.- ________________________________________________________________

Read the following sentences. Find the mistake and write the sentence in the correct
form.

1. Both sexes are capable to do military service.

2. A university graduate is expected to be able of

enduring such a situation.
3. An engine officer is capable of start up a
machine.
4. The deck officer will can handle the deck
equipment.
Deck equipment consists of all
equipment used in the application of
deck seamanship

Deck fittings are used aboard ships Ground tackle is the equipment used in
and boats mainly for the securing anchoring and mooring with anchors.
of mooring lines. Deck fittings It includes anchors, anchor cables and
include bitts, cleats, chocks, chains, and associated equipment, such
fairleads and towing pad eye. as chain stoppers, bending shackles,
outboard swivel shots, and detachable
Bollards are pier fittings. links.
Windlasses, capstans and chain stoppers

A capstan is a mechanical device used mainly on board ships or in shipyards for

moving heavy weights by means of ropes, cables, or chains. A capstan consists of a
drum, driven either manually or by steam or electricity that rotates about a vertical axis
to wind in a line wrapped around it.
A windlass is a device that functions very similarly to a capstan, but instead of
featuring a vertical barrel, the windlass will feature a horizontal pulley or barrel. These
devices are often used for the same purposes in different applications as well.
The chain stopper or anchor lock is a fail safe to prevent anchor free fall at any
point while the anchor is in the raised position. Any boat using a windlass should also
be equipped with a chain stopper.

The maintenance and lubrication of heavy deck

equipment (such as winches, cranes, and anchor
windlasses) are performed by personnel of the
engineering department. You need to keep in mind that
you must work with this equipment. Therefore, for
your own protection, you should assist as much as
possible in the maintenance and lubrication of this
equipment.
Answer these questions.
1. What are deck fittings? What do they include?

2. What does ground tackle refer to? What does it comprise?

3. What is the difference between the windlass and the capstan?

4. What does the chain stopper prevent from?

5. Who is in charge of the deck machinery maintenance?

Look at the pictures and label them.
