a. What do the videos want to impart? Do you agree with it? Why or why not?

Lourd de Veyra emphasized in his episodes of WOTL: Nasa Puso Natin si

Rizal the sad reality of the Filipino people, and that is the fact that most of us
know Rizal’s name but not his legacy. Despite all the laws and measures that the
government has implemented in order for us to not forget Dr. Jose Rizal like
naming streets and places here in the Philippines after him, his face engraved in 1
peso coin, legislating Rizal law, and the like, we cannot deny that our ignorance
about his greatness remains profound as most of us only know his name.

In today’s time, I assume only a handful of Filipino people can really

answer questions regarding Rizal and his contributions to the Philippines that we
are enjoying right now. Despite studying Rizal and his works for years in one’s
academic life, only a few are able to learn it by heart and live by it. Personally, as I
was watching the video, I learned that there are a lot of things about Rizal that I
am also not aware of. I admit that I learned some of them when I was in High
School but I am afraid that just like others, I have also already forgotten most of
it. It is sad but I agree with the abovementioned.

b. Do you agree with Quizon that the Rizal law is ineffective? Why or why not?
Is it the law that is ineffective or is it the execution that makes it
ineffective? To quote Quizon, “In school we only get the basic information about
him. We get to read his novels and poems and learn of the places he visited and
even the women who became part of his life. But we have ended up not knowing
what he really stood for. We even wear shirts bearing his image, but we do not
go deeper in understanding him.”

The execution plays a big part in this issue. I strongly believe that Rizal
being a subject makes it difficult for students to actually learn his ideals and ideas
due to the fact that it can be easily seen as a requirement to fulfill their academic
needs rather than being an inspiring source to further foster the youth’s sense of
patriotism.

In my beliefs, I see nothing wrong with the Rizal law and its desire to
strengthen students’ civic conscience and to develop them into better citizens of
the Philippines but the means of it being taught is one of the things that hinder
the effectiveness of the subject.

c. What are the reasons, mentioned in the article, that makes the law ineffective?

Globalization and technology are two of the reasons, according to Quizon, that
makes the law ineffective. Because of this, it is easier for our interests to be shifted since
we are being aware of foreign elements. We are being fond of anything foreign than
patronizing our own. This is the sad reality that the Philippines is still facing up until to
this day.
Moreover, one thing that also hinders the law from being effective is the way
students perceive Rizal as a subject. In 2010, according to a blog authored by
TeamCrisostomo, UP conducted a survey regarding the essence of the Rizal course, and
results showed that this subject is deemed insignificant to most of the students. Some
also say that this subject just gives unnecessary workload to students and diverts their
focus from the major subjects. Even Quizon says that some college students who are
taking up technical courses like medicine and engineering are questioning the relevance
of this subject to their careers. The thing here is that students take this subject just as a
requirement in fulfilling their academic needs.

d. Are these reasons still applicable at the present time?

This law was legislated in order to honor the greatness of Rizal as well as to
kindle the flame of the Filipino youths’ sense of patriotism and nationalism. The fact that
the issue with regards to our sense of patriotism, even decades has already past, is still
evident in today’s time is very saddening. In fact, it is more profound than ever.

Many of the Filipino youth lacks interest in deeply understanding nationalism and
appreciating our beloved Philippines due to the modernization that has been done to
our country. It is undeniable that a lot of people prefer imported products than
purchasing ones that are locally made. With this, our own products are being
overshadowed by imported products. As a result, our local people are struggling to make
a living since sales of Filipino-made products do not go well. Moreover, many Filipinos
prefer working abroad, and even migrate there, which results in losses of our country’s
assets. With these, the sole purpose of the law is being taken away.

e. What can a student, like you, do to address the issues presented both in the videos
and in the article.

Every one of us has our own two cents on what is wrong with the world, but only a few
will do the work for the improvement of their lives. We can easily point our fingers to the

government and their efforts but have we ever asked ourselves, what have I done to make this
world a better place to live not just for me but for the future generations?

The only thing I can do to address the abovementioned issues is to be a better Filipino
citizen myself. I believe that I cannot convince other people to live by the ideals and ideas of
Rizal if I know for myself that I am also one of them who lacks knowledge and understanding
about this. I cannot teach someone what I do not know, I cannot give what I do not have.
By being a better Filipino citizen, I can foster my knowledge, skills, values, and
motivation to make a difference in my community. I can start it by practicing my rights as a
Filipino citizen. Voting for a better leader, being able to be aware of contemporary issues being
faced by our country, help those who need a helping hand, and of course learning to rise up and
fight for our country's rights and freedom especially in times of injustices and suffering of our
countrymen.
All of this can be achieved by living the ideals and ideas Dr. Jose Rizal alongside our other
national heroes. History repeats itself, may their bravery, dedication, and sacrifices be an
inspiration for us to be our heroes in our own ways. Just like Quizon said, “If the problems still
exist today, then it is our turn to become heroes, too.”
Let me end this by quoting Rizal, “I do not write for this generation. I am writing for
other ages. If this could read me, they would burn my books, the work of my whole life. On the
other hand, the generation which interprets these writings will be an educated generation; they
will understand me and say: 'Not all were asleep in the nighttime of our grandparents.”
