“Make Rizal Obsolete”

I have observed that Rizal in present times is not obsolete due to the happening in the
Philippines that he had encountered during that time, is still in the present society. I think that
due to the issues we face today, we can still apply what Rizal did and we still haven’t achieved
what he claims for our sense of nationalism growing by the future generations, much as what his
statements say.

one of Rizal statements say that “That the comments he made on that period are
applicable to ours shows that Philippine society has changed very little from his time.” “ He
might as well have been writing about our time, for all around us we see the same backwardness,
the same preponderance of intolerance, the same prevalence of ignorance, the same display of
opportunism and corruption, the same lack of nationalist sentiment, and the same disunity when
we should be working together in pursuit of common national goals.” And this made my
statement that Rizal isn’t really obsolete because first of all, we know what problems of the past
and it’s history yet we still don’t get rid of it. We still don’t focus in solving the issue. I feel that
we are supporting it more, rather that getting rid of it.

Another point that proves Rizal is not obsolete in the present day is that we think highly
enough at foreigners that they are better at us and more progressive. That they have more better
characteristics than our culture itself. we rather praise other race that to support one’s country to
for better improvement. With this kind of behavior, foreigners are the ones progressing rather
than our own country and we are still trapped in their hands obeying and following what they
have and trying to level with them.

Last point that makes Rizal not obsolete is that when it comes to the line of nationalism
of our people “In the indolence of the Filipinos, Rizal rebuked his countrymen for their lack of
nationalist sentiment by stating that “A man in the Philippines is only an individual. He is not a
member of a nation.” Many Filipinos today, like the Filipinos Rizal was referring to, are working
merely for their own interests, hardly taking into consideration the common good.

To sum it all up, what Rizal made to all of his writings about Philippines social status in
his time and by his statements, we can see that it still remained in our present daily living as if
we have embraced this kind of treatment. Based on the readings, it has stated that there are some
changes in our society that makes Rizal not obsolete in present day.
