I. INTRODUCTORY
What are the prior knowledge, things, or information you know about him?

Honestly, I know very little about Rizal hence I have a short attention span when
learning about peoples history but some information I know about him is that every
time he moves from country to country is that he wants to expand his knowledge and
further studies to help him be our national hero today.

ASSESSMENT

A. To fully understand the history of the Rizal Law, read the Trials of the Rizal Bill and then
answer the questions below.

1. What was the major argument raised by Senator Francisco “Soc” Rodrigo against the
passage of the Rizal Bill?

According to Pilande (2018), His main argument was the novels Noli Me Tangere
and El Filibusterismo were an attack to ridicule the Catholic Church where Senator
Rodrigo had close ties with, he also commented that the books were clearly anti-
Catholic and a strategy to strike against the Catholic Church.

2. What was the major argument raised by Senator Jose P. Laurel and Clara M. Recto in
support of the passage of the Rizal Bill?

While Senator Francisco “Soc” Rodrigo was against the Rizal Bill, Senator Jose P.
Laurel and Claro M. Recto is in support and even said that Rizal’s' novels that it
aimed "at inculcating civic consciousness in the Filipinos, national dignity, personal
pride, and patriotism" and stated that even though he criticized and ridiculed some
churches, he made exceptions for the worthy ones.

3. Are there any points of convergence between the supporters and opposers of the Rizal
Bill based on their arguments?

Yes, there are some points of convergence between the supporters and opposers that
are still linked in the Rizal Bill's concept of the religion and morality that Filipinos
should preserve and spread.
B. Just like in the 1950s in Laurel and Recto’s time, how is the life and works of Jose Rizal
relevant to the present times?

Now in modern times, Rizal’s' life and works will be relevant not only for education but
also for inspiration. It can inspire the youth in this generation in many ways, for one, to
be true to yourself and undying love for the country. As one of the youths, I thought
learning life and works of Rizal will be unentertaining however it turned the other way
around and with that, I am now pleased to make use of this intelligence to teach the
youngsters. One fact about him is that he is famous for political writing and as for today
politics is one of the interests of many students considering that the government can
affect their education and importantly their future. Lastly, the adolescent now is too self-
conscious to speak, Rizal however was smart to write and speak through words in his
novels and that is where it can encourage them that not only speaking is the way to
change things but also, they can do it in writing.
