Teaching in Social Studies

Things to Ponder:
 What do you think are the reasons for such dismal state of Social
Studies education in the country?
 I think the reasons why there is such dismal state of Social Studies
education in the country is because of the out-of-field
teaching, where there is a lack of specialized social studies ,lack of
procedural content knowledge of social studies of a teachers, ending
up in learners low academic performance. Also the big impact of Social
Media especially the fake news resulting deviation from the truth
abHout the studies of any historical events in our country. And stu
dents who spent the most time using social media had fewer kjacademic
behaviors.
 How can the Commission on Higher education (CHED) assist the Department
of Education (DepEd) in solving the identified challenges?
 As DepEd Secretary Briones calls for collaborations with CHED to
identify issues and streamline programs related to improving the
state of Philippine education. That their must be thorough studies on
any historical or social studies, accounts or issues and events here
in the Philippines education.
 Suggest three interventions or programs that would address the
challenges enumerated above.
 Investigation on the reliability of sources.
 In -depth study of events, issues and happenings within the study of
social studies in the Philippine education
 They have to initiate measures to attract senior high school students
to take social studies as an area of specialization in their college

Exercise I : The Muddiest Point
In this particular lesson, what was not clear to you? What do you think
are the reasons for such?Write your answer in the space provided.
 In this lesson, what was not clear to me is why the DepEd allows to
have dismal state of social studies in the country and can’t even
find a way to prevent it.And why they insist that social studies is
not one of the learning area.
 Maybe because they find it difficult to teach lessons effectively due
to their little knowledge which results in limiting students learning
experiences. And the K to 12 curricula in the Philippines has evolved
with high expectations from Social Studies teachers.
Exercise II: Five-Minute Paper
What was the most useful or the most meaningful thing you learned in
Lesson I?Expand on your answer.
 The most meaningful thing I learned in lesson I is the importance of
studying in Social Studies, where as a learner I can truly understand
and have the curiosity about real-world issues. Where it helps as to
understand the developments that are taking place in society and the
world as well as their roles in shaping the future of the nation. And
as students we are supposed to understand the importance of history
to life and engage them in meaningful discussions on past and current
events.

Compose an essay on the experiences that you had in your social studies
class during your elementary and high school days.

During my time in high school I had it really good moments, but my best
moments that I’ve experienced are in a particular class during my Social
Studies(ECONOMICS) subject, it is beacause our teacher in this
subject(ECONOMICS) when I was in 4th year highschool in Manila is so strict
because he will throw away our notebook if he is not satisfied with our
answers. And as far as I can remember the content of our lesson in Economics is
current events it is about the understanding of the importance of people,
events, and issues in the news. It also refers to events in the recent past,
the effects of which have an immediate impact on and relevance for the
present. That’s why social studies is important in curriculum because it is
best to get us as a students to explore the world using our skills that we
learn and strengthen our understanding of daily life that is sometimes hidden
from us and exposed to us suddenly once we turn into adults.

Teaching Social Studies in Elementary Grades
Experience
Using the Araling Panlipunan Curriculum Guide, explain how the following
themes/topics are articulated from Grade 1 to Grade 10.
 Citizenship
 Consumption
 Nationalism
 Rights and responsibilities
 Diversity
Kids in the first grade are usually six- or seven-years-old.As
early as Grade 1, they are learning to read and understand new concepts in
mathematics, science, english and values at the most basic of levels. It is also
the time to begin teaching them how to be a valuable member of
society.Learners in first graders learn about the responsibilities of
Citizenship by incorporating them in daily classroom activities where learners
have to exposed and show their identity and personal characteristics to their
fellow human beings by showing their traits as a good citizen: respect,
courage, responsibility, compassion and honesty. And in this themes children
learn the important information regarding their local, state, and national
government and culture.By putting together all this knowledge, skills, and
values necessary to form the foundation to be a good citizen, by this topic
educators can ensure that learners are in the very best position possible to
become contributing members to society as adults.
As they advance in Grade 2,they already know their rights and
responsibilities not just in their home but also inside of the school
community.Political science comes in as learners study their rights and
responsibilities and they role.Where they will learn to be responsible for all
their actions,by obeying the rules inside the classroom . And by this
themes/topic educators need class needs rules and share with them that all
citizens of the classroom community need to be honest, show respect and take
responsibility for their actions. Let the kids know there will be consequences
when the rules are broken.
In Grade 3 and 4,Diversity in and out of the classroom will
continue to grow, so it’s essential we prepare students to adapt to an
evolving world and embrace those different from themselves by highlightning
its local history, and culture.By preparing the learners to be global citizens
by exposing them to people from different cultures and social groups, gender,
socioeconomic status, religion, and family structures. We can teach children to
respect and value people regardless of the color of their skin, their physical
abilities, or the language they speak. And also in Grade 3 and 4,their studies
of consumption were significantly related to economics status. The primary goal
is helping students show their behaviors and actions on how to save.Learners
need to have money of their own so they can learn how to make decisions about
using it on how to spend it.Where they can also tell their parents that
instead of money they will only bread and juice.
As learners enters Grade 5 and 6,Nationalism where Philippine
history will comprehensively examined.Teaching nationalism in schools
will help students build up a sense of identity. It will help them feel like
they belong in their country. The students get the chance to understand that
they have a purpose in society. It helps builds the students' character
development.
In this study,as a learners from Grades 1-6 it gives the students
the opportunity to develop skills for dealing with today's information
especially in a rapidly changing world. The purpose of this study was to
explore the effectiveness of an integrated curriculum,it shows here that an
integrated curriculum gave students a better understanding of the relationship
between subjects.

Challenge
Answer the following questions.Substantiate your point by providing
relevant facts/data.
1. Enumerate and explain the importance of an integrated curriculum.
 Integrated curriculum is a study in which children broadly
explore knowledge in various subject related to certain
aspects of their environment. It says here that children can
easily learn and have a wide range of knowledge due to the
various disciplines covered in this curriculum.
 It allows students to move across disciplines as they learn
about their world. It says here that every students have to
focuse on making connections and allowing them to engage in
relevant, meaningful activities that can be connected to
real life.Understand how to apply what they’re learning to
real-world scenarios better
 It presents rich opportunities for learners to become
socially aware and engaged. It says here that learners have
to develop different or multiple perspectives, points of
views, and values to become a contributing member of
society.

2. Prove that Araling Panlipunan is an integrated subject.Cite at least three

pieces of evidence.
 In basic education curriculum,Araling Panlipunan stand out
among other learning areas and its because of integrative
nature.Where both learners and teachers were examined
themselves and the society where they belong.
 Araling Panlipunan is of course an integrated subject not
only teaches students about our history or should I say the
history of the Philippines where it uses the perspective of
time to explore the causes and effects of events in the
past.It also teaches the primary grades includes reading,
writing, listening, speaking, literature, drama, social
studies, math, science, health, physical education, music,
and visual arts.
 It also about the study of different disciplines like
health, values and mathematics.Just like the practice of
vaccination around the world where in Araling Panlipunan
economics or current events are integrated, that what the DOH
wants to convey is the safety of the people against COVID-19
where health is integrated in this matter.
3. Discuss the challenges and their corresponding solutions in implementing an
integrated and interdisciplinary curriculum.
 The challenges in implementing an integrated and
interdisciplinary curriculum are the following,understanding
concepts, level of experiences, time and availability of
resources. And find it difficult to teach lessons effectively
due to their little knowledge because of the changing which
results in limiting students learning experiences.
 The corresponding solutions to the implementation of an
integrated and interdisciplinary curriculum were teachers should
have time to seek more meaningful learning so that they can
carry out the knowledge they should be able to share for their
students. That while they are teaching they also need to study so
that they can relay a deeper knowledge to the learners.Where it
helps a child to become more specific in their understanding and
use of language as it assists their ability to follow
instructions and be specific in what they are talking about. And
by introducing oneself as a teacher is a great help for children
to come out and show their ability to interact with other people
with their classmates.Educators, are constantly searching for new
ways to help students make sense of the multitude of life’s
experiences and the bits and pieces of knowledge they gain from
departmentalized curriculum. That learners must provides a
opportunities to apply to the skills they have learned and
encourages them to be active in participation in relevant real-
life experiences.

SIMILARITIES
CHALLENGE
Answer the following questions. Substantiate your point by providing
relevant facts/data.
1. Are themes in Araling Panlipunan relevant to the context of the Philippine
society?.
 Yes!The themes of Araling Panlipunan is relevant to the context of
the Philippine society because it study the focuses on human
connections and how society functions. It is a portion of a school
curriculum that includes classes in history, government, economics,
civics, sociology, geography, and anthropology and is focused on
the study of social relationships and the functioning of
society. They learn about other people and their values in different
times, places and conditions. They also develop the perspective of
their environment and the process of its advancement.
2. Is the expanding environment model appropriate for the elementary social
studies curriculum?Prove your answer.
 For me Yes!expanding environment model is appropriate for the
elementary grades, its because they can use the primary and
secondary sources to describe how people developed and evolved over
time. That things from the past can help them shape the present, were
they can compare people from different cultures and they can easily
deal with their physical environment.
3. Suggest ways on how to make the elementary social studies curriculum more
relevant for the 21st century Filipino learners.
 Teach what the kids want to learn because learners are curious
about the world around them and they love to discover why things
are the way they are. That we need to show students the world, not
just by telling them about it.We need a role plays, and
demonstrations that can bring it alive in the classroom.
 Elementary learners build analyzation skills and their own opinions
supported by facts through these activities learners can create
their own pathways for thinking instead of following a lecture
based lesson.
 Project based learning by creating these learning, learners have
the opportunity to research, discuss and present more relevant
historical event in Philippines.
 Using a technology placed as the most creative and innovative work
of 21st-century, and becomes a central issue and theme in many
innovations and new vision of education, including Social
Studies. This is because it has advantages than a traditional
learning mode in terms of flexibility in the time and place where
students improve their collaboration, interaction, and
participation in their learning activities, and support them to
create constructive learning environments.

HARNESS
Interview elementary social studies teachers regarding the challenges they
are encountering in implementing the standards as prescribed in the
curriculum. Use the guide questions provided.
Guide Question:
 Are the standards(performance,content,and learning
competencies)clearly articulated?If not,can you please elaborate
your response?
 Curriculum contains all the activities in the teaching
learning process. This is the standard or basis for all
the teachings learning activities.Since this is the
standard and guide, all the competencies to be developed,
the content to be taken up and the performances to be
performed or accomplished are clearly articulated and
laid up to the smallest details for smooth teaching-
learning process and goals to be achievable.
 Are the prescribed standards achievable? Why or why not?
 For as long as the teacher is well-versed on the topic
and subject matter and has mastery of the subject
matter,this is achievable,because every
competency, activity and content are simplified to the
smallest details that every learner may grasp.
 Can you suggest way on how to improve the said standards?
 With the advent of so many Social Media flat
forms, standards should be revised more often to cope up
with the rapid changes of time caused by the modern
information technology.
 allign instructions to learning standards - it should
always be clearly aligned to the learning target and task
for mastering a learning standard.
 Include formative assessment - this helps to show where
students need improvement.Students become more motivated
about learning and confident in their abilities.
 Use the feedback loop concept - Students’movement from
one learning target to another works best when students
receive feedback to help them improve. Students rely on
feedback and, without it, their chance for remaining
engaged learners spirals downward.

 In the second tenets of constructivism, the children are able to take

new behaviors that make them better prepared to deal with the world

 The third tenets of constructivism, this is when the learner may
process new information and gain new knowledge. When they stored
information from the past meets new information, their brain’s ability
to store knowledge is boosted.

Implement constructivist learning principles.Clarify the enabling and
hindering factors in the realization of constructivism as a learning
philosophy.
Enabling Factors Hindering Factors
My analysis here is that social constructivism is involve in these key stage
standards as an educational philosophy, its because it covers community events
to which young students belong. And also I believe that knowledge is actively
constructed by the individual through their interactions with each other and
their environment, and that learning is not passively receiving information
but the result of people actively constructing knowledge. That in these cases
most children are already aware of what is happening around them because of
social media and also because of what they see on television, internet and
other technology related. That for today's youth they can easily learn because
of modern technology.Where their learning is by engaging in real life
situation.
