1. Democratic, involves all employees


Situations in which to use this style;
 Team is skilled and eager to share ideas
 Leaders does not have all the information
 Co-operations is need
 Decisions need to be looked at from several perspectives

Advantages

- Sense of empowerment
- Variety of ideas given
- Clear the way of communication
- Authority is delegated which motivates
- Complex decisions can be made

Disadvantages

- Erroneous decisions
- Time consuming
- Feelings of discouragement
- Not effective in times in crisis
- Leaders may depend too much on input

2. Autocratic Style, makes all the decision on his own.


When to use this style;
 Time of crisis
 All information is available
 When employees are not cooperative

Advantages

- Quick decisions
- Work is completed on time
- Line of communication is clear
- Direct supervision and strict control
- Provides strong relationships
- Works well in large organizations
- Useful in crisis
Disadvantages

- Demotivating may resist this leadership style


- Experienced staff
- High staff turnover

3. Laissez – Faire – Charming and Inspiring


When to use this style;
 Employees are experts
 Leader is busy and needs to delegate
 Leadership skills need to be developed

Advantages

- Make own decisions


- Maximum freedom
- Work independently
- Leader motivates through trust
- Authority is delegated

Disadvantages

- Lack of clear direction


- Employees are held responsible
- Can cause conflict
- Workers solve their own output
- Productivity could decrease

4. Charismatic – “leave alone”


When to use this style;
 Achieve results
 Motivate and energize
 Inspire loyalty

Advantages

- Achieve excellent results


- Employees are motivated
- Encourage loyalty and hard work among employees

Disadvantages

- Leader believe in himself/herself


- Projects can collapse
- Leaders are in tolerant of challenges
5. Transactional – transaction – give and take
When to use this style;
 Maximize employee performance
 Under pressure
 Low morale

Advantages

- Work hard for rewards


- Employees productivity and morale
- Gold’s can be achieved
- Employees know expectations
- Disciplinary action are well communicated

Disadvantages

- Boredom
- Lots of monitoring
- Controlling employees can be time consuming
- Demoralized and unmotivated if they don’t get reward
- Not good for teamwork
