SYN-PSD-0027 – Netspan NBIF Product Specification
This document describes the transportation mechanism implemented in Netspan to interface
with the customer OSS through an NBIF.
Note: To avail Airspan’s Customer Care Help Desk support, you must be a registered user and must
have a valid support contract. To register, click here and fill the Registration form.
To create and update issue logs, send e-mails to Customer Care Help Desk. Once you submit your
issue, the system generates a new issue and sends an issue number for your reference. The system
uses this issue number to categorize and store e-mails under the appropriate issue.
To help Customer Care Help Desk identify your issue, include the issue number and your Customer
Care Helpdesk account details in all further communications.
1 Overview
This document provides a comprehensive overview of Netspan alarms and events.
A Netspan event is a notification indicating the occurrence of a condition on the Netspan server or any
NEs - for example - Channel Action Error, where the node reports a change in its status per channel.
The following conditions can raise a Netspan event:
The receipt of the SNMP traps or notifications by Netspan.
The transmission of any internal Netspan notification to Event Service by any Netspan
component.
The occurrence of a significant change (for example, rebooting the server or change of an alarm
status).
A Netspan alarm indicates the presence of a fault condition on the Netspan server or any NEs - for
example - Node Lost Comms, which indicates that the EMS server is unable to communicate with the
SNMP agent on the node.
Note: Not all events raise alarms. Only events notifying fault conditions raise alarms.
Depending on the event severity, Netspan raises an alarm until the subsequent condition is cleared.
Resolving a fault in the network clears the associated alarm, but an event remains until it is expired
from the Netspan event buffer.
Figure 1 illustrates the Netspan fault management mechanism.
Figure 1: Netspan Fault Management Mechanism
The node or NE sends the SNMP trap notifications (for example, Cold Start) to Event Service. Event
Service converts those notifications to Netspan events.
Event Service also performs the background polling of the NE alarm state and raises internal events to
synchronise the alarms. Certain events are forwarded to Alarm Service, which raises or clears alarms
as required.
If the NBIF event and alarm forwarding is configured, the events and alarms are forwarded as SNMP
traps to a high level management system.
2 Netspan Alarms
An alarm is the response to one or more associated events. In Netspan, alarms are raised and cleared
by events.

3 Netspan Events
An event indicates the occurrence of a typical condition (a fault or change in a state) in the network. An
event indicating a fault triggers an alarm.
Netspan stores events in its database. The Netspan events buffer can store up to a maximum of 1
million events. An event remains until it is expired from the Netspan event buffer.
Using Filter – Click on the Filter checkbox and select the preferred search criterion listed in
the Filter drop-down box. For more information on the available search criteria, see Table 8.
Table 8. Event Search Criteria
