PSU & PoE Overview
• Power over Ethernet or PoE describes any of several standard or ad-hoc systems which pass electric power along with data on
twisted pair Ethernet cabling
• This allows a single cable to provide both data connection and electric power to devices such as wireless access points, IP
cameras, and VoIP phones
• There are several common techniques for transmitting power over Ethernet cabling
• Two of them have been standardized by IEEE 802.3 since 2003
• These standards are known as Alternative A and Alternative B
A. 10BASE-T
B. 100BASE-TX
• Only two of the four signal pairs in typical Cat 5 (Ethernet )cable are used
• Alternative B separates the data and the power conductors, making troubleshooting easier
• It also makes full use of all four twisted pairs in a typical Cat 5 (Ethernet) cable
• The positive voltage runs along pins 4 and 5, and the negative along pins 7 and 8

PSU & PoE Overview
• Alternative A transports power on the same wires as data for 10 and 100 Mbit/s Ethernet variants
• This is similar to the phantom power technique commonly used for powering condenser microphones
• Power is transmitted on the data conductors by applying a common voltage to each pair
• Because twisted-pair Ethernet uses differential signaling, this does not interfere with data transmission
• The common-mode voltage is easily extracted using the centre tap of the standard Ethernet pulse transformer
• Gigabit Ethernet and faster, all four pairs are used for data transmission, so BOTH Alternatives A and B transport power on wire
pairs also used for data
• In addition to standardizing existing practice for spare-pair (Alternative B) and common-mode data pair power (Alternative A)
transmission, the IEEE PoE standards provide for signalling between the power sourcing equipment (PSE) and powered device (PD)
• This signalling allows the presence of a conformant device to be detected by the power source, and allows the device and source to
negotiate the amount of power required or available

Power Supply Unit/Power Over Ethernet (PSU/PoE)

Airspan PSU & PoE Overview
• PoE supplies and provide the required output voltage for the equipment to operate (24V volt)
• The power source for the PoE supply is designed for a specific application. (AC mains input or DC input)
• For mains input most modern switch mode converters are designed to work over a full range of input voltages from around 100V to
264V this allows them to be used in countries with 110V 60Hz mains or countries with 230V 50Hz (including the anticipated voltage
variations)
• For the DC conversion a similar range of input voltages can be accommodated and typically they can be designed for 12V
(automobile applications), 24V (typical USA exchange voltage) or 48V (typical European exchange voltage)
• Specific case of the iB440 DC PoE supply the nominal input voltage is defined as 48V and the 36v – 72V input range is the
maximum range of input voltage variation that can be accommodated while still maintaining the correct output voltage.
• Input voltages outside of these extremes will result in output shutdown due to input over-voltage (at the high end) or input over-
current (at the lowest voltage)
• Note: These systems are often defined by the lead acid battery formats used for emergency back up.

Airspan Products PSU & PoE
• Products powered by Airspan PSU/PoE
• Products based on a 24V PSU/PoE
• AC/Internal/Indoor 3 Pin Power Lead
• DC/External/Outdoor Hard Wire Terminal Block
• They accept data-in via a Shielded RJ45 Input Jack Ethernet Connector
• Providing data and power on the Shielded RJ45 Output Jack Ethernet Connector
• They work by supplying power to the remote device on the 24v Unused Ethernet Pins
• Voltage ranges quoted are the input conditions for the nominal 48V going into the PSU/ PoE supply that provides the 24V via PoE
to the Radio or Antenna Transport Solution
• Ethernet Wires & RJ45 Connector Pins are used for power and data:-
• 1-3 & 2-6 (Data)
• 4-5 (Power)
• 7-8 (Earth)
