1 Safety
1 Safety
The press is/becomes a component of a press system.
When assembling the press the following described conditions must be
fulfilled, so that the press can be assembled duly and without impairment of
security and health of persons together with other parts to a complete
functioning machine.
The press must be designed and manufactured according to the valid safety
regulations and the latest state of technology. Furthermore the press must
be checked for its function and safety. By that the operational safety is
guaranteed. Nevertheless the press system can involve risks, if
• it is not used in accordance with its designated use,
• it is operated by untrained personnel,
• it is modified or converted incorrectly or
• the safety regulations are not observed.
Any other use for any purposes other than those described above is
considered contrary to its designated use. The manufacturer cannot be held
liable for damages resulting from this.
Without SafetyModule When not using a SCHMIDT Safety Module, the press may only be used if
the press system is automatically loaded and unloaded. Make sure that
• the press system is operated with a safe tool. The tool must be designed
so that it is not possible to reach into the hazard zones.
OR
• the press system or the tool is equipped with a fixed cover. The cover
must be designed so that it is not possible to reach into the hazard
zones.
For the determination of the hazard zone, the standard DIN EN ISO 13857
(Safety of machinery - Safety distances to prevent hazard zones being
reached by upper and lower limbs) applies in both cases.

1.3 Risks
The press system must be designed so that when using correctly a risk of
the operator is excluded as far as possible.
Certain places at the press system cannot be protected without limiting the
functionality and usability of the press. Therefore, there still remains a
residual danger. Safe press operation requires the proper interaction of
press, press control, pressing tool, protective device(s) and action of the
users in accordance with safety procedures.
DANGER
! Protective devices
The press system may only be used if all required protective devices have
been completely assembled and are effective. The protective devices must

The designations are those of the pneumatic plan from the technical
documentation included in the delivery.
Function The two-channel pneumatic safety block is connected to the compressed air
supply via the compressed air connection (1). The filter regulator (FDM) is
used to dehydrate and clean (filter pore with 40 µm) the compressed air and
pre-select a starting pressure of about 3 to 6 bar. If you want to reduce the
pressing force even further, you will need the optionally available force
output preselector (adjustable to about 1 bar).
The on-off valve (Y1) is switched on and off by the connected control unit.
The pressure switch (S2) is used to monitor the mains pressure. When the
mains pressure drops below a certain value, the control unit will be switched
off. The solenoid valves (Y2) and (Y3) and the home position switches (S5)
and (S6) are used to activate the working stroke and return stroke.
The distributor block (LVt) allows you to connect additional valves G1/8” for
application-specific tasks.
Additional pneumatic control elements, such as one-way flow control valves
for setting the stroke speed or a pilot-controlled check valve as device for
retention of ram in home position for particularly heavy tools, can be seen
from the enclosed pneumatic plan.

Structure
Function
In working stroke, the three pistons (2) connected by the piston rod (4) are
pressurized with compressed air via the air connection (1) and move
downwards. The air below the pistons escapes from the cylinder chambers
via the depressurized connection (3) and the vents (5). The ram (6) moves
up to the maximum working stroke.
10 ®
SCHMIDT PneumaticPress 20-36 – V2.3
2 PneumaticPress
In return stroke, the top cylinder chambers are vented via the connection (1)
and only the bottommost piston is pressurised with compressed air via the
connection (3). Ambient air enters the two remaining cylinder chambers via
the vents (5). The ram, together with the three pistons, moves upward.
Direct-acting press During the press process, the pneumatic cylinder is pressurized with
compressed air. A force which acts on the piston moves the ram over the
entire working stroke.
Toggle press During the press process, the pneumatic cylinder is pressurized with
compressed air. A force which acts on the toggle via the piston moves the
ram over the entire working stroke.
The power of the press depends on the expanded position of the toggle.
