1 Safety
The press is/becomes a component of a press system.
When assembling the press the following described conditions must be
fulfilled, so that the press can be assembled duly and without impairment of
security and health of persons together with other parts to a complete
functioning machine.

The press must be designed and manufactured according to the valid safety
regulations and the latest state of technology. Furthermore the press must
be checked for its function and safety. By that the operational safety is
guaranteed. Nevertheless the press system can involve risks, if
• it is not used in accordance with its designated use,
• it is operated by untrained personnel,
• it is modified or converted incorrectly or
• the safety regulations are not observed.

The press system is only allowed to be used in perfect technical condition.

All existing protective devices must be present and fully functional.
Independently of the instructions specified in this manual the current country
specific regulations regarding work safety and health protection are valid.

1.1 Designated Use

With SafetyModule In combination with a SCHMIDT SafetyModule and a SCHMIDT
PressControl control unit, the press system may be used in manual
workstations with manual loading and unloading for the following press
processes:
• Assembling • Forming
• Riveting • Pressing
• Crimping • Flaring
• Bonding • Punching

Any other use for any purposes other than those described above is
considered contrary to its designated use. The manufacturer cannot be held
liable for damages resulting from this.

Without SafetyModule When not using a SCHMIDT Safety Module, the press may only be used if
the press system is automatically loaded and unloaded. Make sure that
• the press system is operated with a safe tool. The tool must be designed
so that it is not possible to reach into the hazard zones.
OR
• the press system or the tool is equipped with a fixed cover. The cover
must be designed so that it is not possible to reach into the hazard
zones.

For the determination of the hazard zone, the standard DIN EN ISO 13857
(Safety of machinery - Safety distances to prevent hazard zones being
reached by upper and lower limbs) applies in both cases.

Function

Figure 4: Functional principle

1 Air connection 4 Piston rod
2 Piston 5 Vents
3 Air connection 6 Ram

In working stroke, the three pistons (2) connected by the piston rod (4) are
pressurized with compressed air via the air connection (1) and move
downwards. The air below the pistons escapes from the cylinder chambers
via the depressurized connection (3) and the vents (5). The ram (6) moves
up to the maximum working stroke.

10 ®
SCHMIDT PneumaticPress 20-36 – V2.3
2 PneumaticPress

In return stroke, the top cylinder chambers are vented via the connection (1)
and only the bottommost piston is pressurised with compressed air via the
connection (3). Ambient air enters the two remaining cylinder chambers via
the vents (5). The ram, together with the three pistons, moves upward.

Direct-acting press During the press process, the pneumatic cylinder is pressurized with
compressed air. A force which acts on the piston moves the ram over the
entire working stroke.

Toggle press During the press process, the pneumatic cylinder is pressurized with
compressed air. A force which acts on the toggle via the piston moves the
ram over the entire working stroke.
The power of the press depends on the expanded position of the toggle.

control and supervision of a trained electrician and in accordance with
the applicable electrical engineering rules and regulations.
) All spare parts must comply with the technical requirements established
by SCHMIDT Technology. This is always guaranteed in the case of
original spare parts.

CAUTION

! Supporting device for maintenance/repair

For the presses that are equipped with an upper tool with an admissible
weight of > 150 N, the supplied support device for maintenance/repair must
be used.
) Prior to proceeding with the maintenance and repair works, place the
supporting device between upper tool and lower tool/mounting plate of
the frame.

CAUTION

! Replacement of components
After the replacement of components that can influence the safety functions
of the press, a safety test must be carried out.
) Carry out the checks as described in the "Assembly instructions –
SCHMIDT SafetyModule" in chapter "4.1 Checking the safety devices".

Unless expressly otherwise, do not start with the maintenance and servicing
work until
• the press has been disconnected from the compressed air supply,
• the press has been switched off and secured against being switched on
again,
• the dangerous movements have come to a standstill,
• unauthorized, inadvertent or unexpected starting of dangerous
movements as a result of stored energy is prevented.

4 Maintenance and servicing

Further information about the necessary activities you get in the individual
chapters.

All moveable parts are maintenance-free, no lubrication being necessary.

4.1 Checking the compressed air preparation

For an error-free and wear-free operation, dry, dust-free and oil-free
compressed air must be available. This must be guaranteed by
) Check the glass container of the filter regulator every week.
) If required, clean the glass container and integrated sintered filter.

4.2 Cleaning the press

When soiled, the machine surface must be cleaned with a solvent-free
cleaner.

4.3 Cleaning the ram

The ram must be cleaned occasionally due to the abrasion of the guide rails.
To do this, the ram must not be removed.
) Move the ram to the BDC position.
) Clean the ram with a lightly oiled cloth. Do not use a solvent-containing
cleaner, since this will impair self-lubrication by Teflon.

4.4 Checking the ram guiding

Presses type 34, 36 The ground ram has been set ex works for play-free smooth running by
means of the adjustable guide strips. If required, the ram play can be
readjusted.
) Move the ram to the TDC position.
) Tighten the set screws (1) per side evenly until the guide strips make
contact with the ram.
) Now unscrew each set screw (1) a 1/8 turn.
) Check whether the ram moves smoothly.

5.3 Noise level values

Gauging conditions
• let run at no-load, that means without tool at an operational pressure of 6
bar
• at the operator’s place, that means at a height of 1.6 m and approx. 1 m
from the press

below 70 dBA The noise level value of the SCHMIDT PneumaticPress type 23, 24, 32, 33,
34 and 36 is under 70 dBA.

above 70 dBA For the other press types, the following noise level values were measured:
Type 20 79 dBA
Type 25 74 dBA
Type 27 73 dBA
Type 29 74 dBA

The ram speed can be reduced by means of built-in one-way flow control
valves. This will reduce the noise level by up to 8 dBA.

5.4 Air consumption

The air consumption per stroke is determined in standard litres1) at an
operating pressure of 6 bar. The total consumption is made up of a constant
and a stroke-dependent variable percentage. It is calculated as follows:
Total cons. = constant consumption2) + variable consumption
variable cons. = air consumption per stroke2) x working stroke
