Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: What’s The Weather?

Objectives:
Students will be able to:
-name and identify different weather patterns
-describe the changes in weather patterns
-explain the weather patterns typically associated with each season
Students will be able to…

State Standards:
Standard K.E.3: The student will demonstrate an understanding of daily and seasonal weather
patterns.

Context: I would be teaching this lesson to continue the Earth studies science unit in a
Kindergarten classroom. Before this lesson I would have taught the students lessons about the
basic concepts they would need to understand first in order to understand this lesson. Students
will have learned what temperature is, what the sun, clouds, and rain, how temperature can go up
making it hot or down making it cold, etc. We will use this previous knowledge in this lesson to
further learn about the weather. The next lesson would further explore the seasons and what we
do in each season (the clothes we wear, things we do, places we go, etc.).

Data: Students will be grouped randomly in this lesson during the collaborative portion of the
lesson. All students will be randomly assorted into 5 different groups without first being assessed
on purpose as the goal for this portion of the lesson is for kids to realize any understanding they
may or may not have on their assigned topic already. Students can then either build on this
knowledge or learn things brand new while working together. I can use the brief quiz done at the
end of the day to assess students’ understanding of the lesson and their understanding of things
we will cover in our next lesson. I can then use this data to group kids for future lessons.

Procedures:
Introduction (15 minutes): Explain to students that today we will be talking all about the
weather. Ask them what the word “weather” means & explain (where necessary). Explain to
students there are several types of weather, which we call weather patterns, and today we will be
learning about them. Next, ask students if they know what seasons are and explain (where
necessary). Then identify the four seasons and explain to students how the weather also changes
with each season.

Teacher Directed (20 minutes): First I will pull up the weather flashcards we will be
using on my SMART board. I will then go through the flashcards one at a time and ask students
what they believe each one is. We will then talk about and explain each card which represents 1
type of weather. I will answer any questions students have during or after each card. Next, we
will watch a brief YouTube video as a class to help better explain the weather. The video will
also show students an example of ways we can observe and track the weather.

Collaborative (30 minutes): Students will first be split into 5 different groups to learn
about different types of severe weather. Each group will watch a short video of their assigned
weather and then read a short page on it. The students will then have to work with their partners
in their groups to write 2-3 sentences summarizing their weather pattern. Students will also draw
a picture of their weather. I will also be walking around to assist each group as needed.

Independent Digital (30 minutes): Students will first receive an IPad or laptop. Then
students will watch a video on the weather and the seasons. They will then follow along with an
