Religion
In Religion we are exploring our faith through Unit 2: The Road to Bethlehem in
the Growing in Faith, Growing in Christ program for Grade 2. This unit focuses on
several key Advent and Christmas scriptural passages: the Annunciation, the
Visitation, the birth of Jesus, the Epiphany, and the Baptism of Christ.

Language
Reading: We continue to make different types of connections while reading (text to self, text
to text and text to world).

Writing: We are focusing on Procedural or “How to” writing. A procedural text instructs your
audience on how to complete a specific task. Generally this then falls into two categories,
how to make something and how to do something. Recipes, rules for games, manuals and
science experiments are common examples of procedural texts.

At home, you can practise reading and/or writing procedures and look for the features (title,
goal, materials, method or steps and conclusion) in recipes, rules for games, lego manuals
etc.

We also continue to work at applying the conventions of capitals and punctuation and
adding adjectives in our daily writing.
Math
Here are some concepts we will be focusing on this month:

Number Sense:

Students are strongly encouraged to practice addition and subtraction facts to 20 on a

regular basis so they can master these very important facts. Now, and for the rest of the
school year, we will be completing activities that encourage students to use mental math
strategies. Examples of addition strategies we are/will be learning in class are listed on page
3. We will be learning subtraction strategies in the New Year.

Students will think about how knowing the fact 8 + 8 = 16 can help them to figure out the
answer to the question 8 + 9 = ___ (I know 8+8 is 16, so 8+9 is one more). Or they can use their
knowledge of making 10 facts (I know 7+3 is 10, so 7+4 is one more than 10). to help them add.

At home, you can look for opportunities to pose simple addition and subtraction problems
for your child to practice. For example, when setting the table, you might ask how many
plates altogether would be needed if you had 5 guests joining your family for dinner.

Data Management:

● sort sets of data about people or things according to two attributes, using tables and
logic diagrams, including Venn and Carroll diagrams

● collect data through observations, experiments, and interviews to answer questions of

interest that focus on two pieces of information, and organize the data in two-way tally
tables

● analyze different sets of data presented in various ways, including in logic diagrams,
line plots, and bar graphs, by asking and answering questions about the data and
drawing conclusions, then make convincing arguments and informed decisions
