Dear parent or guardian: This is a summary of the key ideas your child is learning in mathematics.

You can use this summary as background as you support your child’s work. Some suggestions for
simple activities you can do with your child are also included.

Representing Numbers Between 100 and 200
One tool that is valuable in representing numbers to 200 is the 200-chart. It shows
the sequence of numbers, although not the size.

Representing Numbers Between 100 and 200 (continued)

Base ten blocks are useful because they provide students with a sense of the size of
the numbers.

The 100-flat will be a new block for students. A 100-flat is made up of ten 10-rods.

A number such as 120 can be represented either as 1 hundred + 2 tens or as 12 tens.

1 hundred + 2 tens 12 tens

Any number between 100 and 200 can be written as 100 + a one-digit or
two-digit number.

For example, you can write 152 in either of these ways:

100 + 52
100 + 50 + 2

You can write 108 like this:

100 + 8

Choosing a Physical Model

Although students can still represent numbers such as 153 with ones, it takes an
awful lot of ones and is generally impractical.

Even tally marks and 10-frames become less practical with this size of number.

For this reason, base ten blocks are probably the best physical representation.

Helping Your Child

Continue the sorts of activities suggested when representing two-digit numbers but
extend them to numbers between 100 and 200.

For example, if you encounter a number such as 160 (e.g., Canada is 160 years old),
ask your child to represent it for you and tell you what the 1 and 6 and 0 mean.

Definitions
10-frame: a grid that can hold 10 counters in 2 rows of 5 squares each; you place
one counter in each square to show a particular number

200-chart: a 20-by-10 grid showing the counting numbers 1 to 200 (or 0 to 199)
in rows of 10

base ten blocks: materials for representing numbers, consisting of proportional

blocks made up of centimetre cubes

tally marks: groups of short lines used to show amounts; four straight lines show
1, 2, 3, 4, and then a diagonal line across those lines shows 5
