Ethical Dilemmas
Explain the dilemmas in the following situations and suggest what could have been done to
avoid any communication ethics blunder. You type your answers thru your email, encode or
write them.
1. Mr. Scott was hired by Yahoo’s CEO in the early 2000 in an attempt to
reverse struggling company’s fortune. By May, a shareholder activist group
alleged that Scott had embellished his resume by claiming he had a degree
in computer science along with an accounting degree when he only has
latter.
The ethical dilemma found in this situation would be distorting visuals. It was stated in
the hard copy of Mr. Scott's resume that he has a degree in computer science and
accounting which gave the CEO of Yahoo the impression that he is qualified for the job
position they are requiring and the position Mr. Scott is applying for however Mr. Scott
lied in his resume and did not actually have a degree in computer science. The best way
to avoid having situations like this is to come clean and become honest in applying for a
job and creating a resume to avoid conflict. HRs and CEOs should double check the
application and resumes of the applicants and see to it that it is a hundred percent
reliable.
2. Professor Javier worked on a research with a friend, Dr. Maneto. When the
paper was finished, Professor Javier realized that most of the ideas in the
study were his. He decided to exclude Dr. Maneto’s name when he
published the paper, and claim sole ownership. He decided to just pay off
Dr. Maneto for his trouble.
The ethical dilemma found in this situation would be plagiarism. Professor Javier took
away Dr. Maneto's right to be recognized as an author in the research paper they both
made. Although most of the content came from Professor Javier there were still input
from Dr. Maneto though minimal. It is not right to just pay someone off and claim their
work just because they are capable of doing so. Plagiarism is still plagiarism. The best
way to avoid this kind of situation is to develop teamwork and communicate with your
partner to effectively produce a paper that would be sufficient enough and satisfactory
for both parties, they should always confide in each other and learn to compromise.
