Vertical Capacity of Caisson Foundations in Calcareous Sediments - OnePetro
Vertical Capacity of Caisson Foundations in Calcareous Sediments - OnePetro
This paper addresses the performance of caisson foundations in normally consolidated calcareous silt
subjected to vertical loading. Results are presented from extensive centrifuge testing of a model caisson
foundation, with particular focus on (a) the bearing capacity of caisson foundations compared to existing
theory; (b) a comparison between drained and undrained bearing capacity; (c) the response to tensile
loading; and (d) the effect of applying preload on the observed bearing capacity. PetroWiki was initially created
from the seven volume Petroleum
Engineering Handbook (PEH)
published by the Society of
INTRODUCTION Petroleum Engineers (SPE).
In order to address recent problems associated with pile foundations, as experienced with the North Rankin
A and Goodwyn A platforms, and in response to the discovery of extensive oil and gas fields in deep water
off Australia''s North-West Shelf, a joint industry project is being undertaken between the Special Research
Centre for Offshore Foundation Systems at The University of Western Australia and various industry
sponsors (see Acknowledgments). An integral part of this study is an examination of the performance of
caisson foundations in calcareous sediments subjected to monotonic and cyclic loads characteristic of
those developed throughout Australia''s North-West Shelf. This paper presents the results of a series of

centrifuge tests on a model caisson in calcareous silt. focusing in particular on the response to vertical
loading. As indicated, the current study is part of a larger investigation into the performance of caisson
foundations in calcareous sediments. Unlike clays and sands, where abundant literature is available
detailing the response of foundations to combinations of monotonic and cyclic loading, the susceptibility of
calcareous sediments to large volume changes resulting from shear loading, and the risk of liquefaction
associated with the build up of excess pore pressure during storm loading, means that extensive research
is required to develop an understanding of caisson performance.
