HTH201 EXPOSURE INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT

FULL NAME: AFIF MUSTAQIM BIN WIANI

STUDENT ID: 2021814382
ESSAY TITLE: Experiencing Espresso Café in Kota Kinabalu

TASK 1

On the weekend I went to Suria Sabah by myself using Grab Car that cost me fifty ringgits for both
come and return rides, regretting my life choices for real. Then as usual I went around shopping at
my leisure until I saw a small coffee shop on the 3 rd floor with the name “Chapter Two” and I thought
to myself why not do the HTH201 1st task now.

There were few people on the line so I queued up and looked at the menu list. Voila, they do sell
espresso so when its my turn I ordered a few croissants and an espresso. The barista who is also
happens to be the cashier smiled and asked me if I know what is espresso. Of course, as a Barista
Skills student I nod and said yes. I paid RM6 for the espresso and the croissants are cheap too but
they were cold. She prepared by weighing the coffee grinds and then tampering the coffee grinds in
the portafilter, and used the semi auto espresso machine to brew it. Since she already grinds the
coffee beans beforehand, she served it pretty quick.
The crema was so bright I gulped a little, then I took a picture of it first forgetting the fact that
espresso should be consumed 30 seconds after it was brewed. But I did take a few sips quick, it
obviously tasted like coffee and is quite sour, being the rookie that I am I cannot really tell the taste
notes.
I did ask the Barista what is the coffee taste notes supposed to be and what kind of coffee is it. She
did not have the original packaging of the coffee and she did not do her research either, so instead
she took out a board that has written the coffee type, the taste notes, price and its roasted date.

So, it is supposed have the taste of white chocolate, cookies and almond. Apart from the nutty taste
I really cannot taste the white chocolate note.

She did not specify which type of Brazilian coffee bean it is. But still, I guess it is a high graded coffee
beans based on the scary price.
These are some of the equipment she used to prepare my espresso.

Overall, this small café is amazing, the barista is kind and friendly and know how to handle inquiries,
the café provides customers seats, the coffee tastes like coffee, they also used high graded coffee,
they did not use fully auto machine so they passed the “actual baristas” test.
So, I am feeling extra after that interview with the “Chapter Two Café” barista and I decided why not
look for other shops that sells espresso. I did look around for a while and asked the staffs whether
they sell espresso and there were only 1 café I could find which is “The Dunkin Donuts”. Pretty lame
but I still give it a “shot” , pun intended. I asked for an Espresso which cost me RM5 but it was
prepared using a fully automatic espresso machine, so convenient only with a touch of a finger.

I interviewed the staff a bit by asking “what kind of coffee is it and he replied “Coffee beans.” I was
so confused neither does he cause his face said it all, I did ask him to be specific then he came up
with the most disappointing answer ever: “Espresso.”

I gave up and just asked him to show me the coffee beans packaging. I did some research online and
Dunkin Donuts claimed that they use 100% Arabica for their coffee. So I gave him that info.
They served it in a cute cup. The crema also looking kind of thick. Taste test, it does taste stronger
and sourer which I am not a fan of but I still could not tell any taste note of anything other than
coffee, nutty and sour.

As expected, big franchisee always disappoints me, the staffs are awkward, the coffee taste decent,
they use fully auto machine, no seats, espresso is a type of coffee beans for them, coffee aside their
donuts are dry and is overpriced just like their drinks. Not a good experience at all.

In the end, it was still a great experience for me because I got to taste different espresso coffee from
different shops and coffee types and learn more about them. This assignment helps me understand
more about coffees. You may enjoy coffee the way it was meant to be enjoyed once you've figured
out the best way to prepare it.
