Chapter 14 – Technical Descriptions and Process Analyses

 Define technical descriptions

A technical description is important for giving a part-by-part depiction of the
components of a mechanism. There are several different types of technical
descriptions.
 Types of technical descriptions
1. Operations Manuals
Operations manuals are meant to be instructional documents on the
packaging of a mechanism, tool, or piece of equipment. The instructions may
include clarity on the quality of the components in the package. Their
intended arrangement in the final part, etc.
2. Product demand specifications
When a company needs either a very specific piece of equipment or one that
simply does not exist, they will submit Product demand specifications. These
are a set of instructions written by the client detailing exactly what they
need. As a result, these documents are written with no regard to an
uneducated audience and often contains incredibly specific details.
3. Study Reports provided by consulting firms
When confronted with an issue that a company cannot solve with its own
assets, they will often use consulting firms to find a solution. This comes in
the form of study reports that are made by said consulting firms.
4. Construction design
This type of document is meant to convey various legal, zoning, and
structural designs created by architects and engineers regarding the
construction of a structure to a client.
5. Sales Literature
In order to market a product, companies create various forms of ads
describing the product. Things like brochures, sales letters, and web site ads.
 Definition of Process analysis
A process analysis is a step-by-step set of instructions formatted in a who, what,
where, when, why and how style.
 Example of Process analysis
A process analysis comes in many different forms. In essence they convey the
instructions for a process. For example: “When installing a new motherboard make
sure to keep all parts grounded. Remember when installing components into their
respective ports that if you are having to force it in, you are doing it wrong.”
 Criteria for writing technical descriptions and Process analysis
1. Title
When writing your title make sure to keep it as simple as possible while
relaying as much about the topic as possible.
2. Overall organization
Keep the process analysis neatly organized based around specific details
ordered by relevance. Careful to know the specific purpose you are trying to
convey with your word usage and structure.
3. Highlighting techniques
When creating a process analysis it is important to label corresponding
relevant information in identical coloring for brevity.
