act one | huddle up

A completely impromptu ten-minute show,

performedsurrounded, with borrowed objects.

Rune’s World | 25

“love your right hand to your left arm and apparently

remove the coin from the material you bunched up earlier.

Actually, the palmed coin is just pushed into view as your

grasp the shirt’s fabric with your right fingers. This :tartling,
magical transposition is completely unexpected, and never
fails to garner a substantial reaction.

t! m I n 9

Timing, a basic principle ofmagic, is about executing each

action at the right time, with the right intensity, and giving it
the right degree of importance.

—Ascanio3

The construction of ”Impromptu Hit Man” is carefully

calculated. Nearly every sleight happens under cover of a
magical moment. When performed properly, it’s a volley of
powerful, visual magic, but it relies as much on timing as it
does on technique.

For example, retaining the pen after you apparently place it

under your arm is a bold move. Technical precision is
important, but in this case, when is paramount to how. A
coin reappears in the left hand to cover palming the pen in
the right hand. How you handle this moment is critical.

Your eyes and posture should point toward the left hand
before you open it. Open your hand to reveal the coin’s
reappearance. Wait a beat and then make your pen steal. If
you try to make the steal at the same time the coin is
revealed, you will merely distract the viewer toward the
secret sleight. .and .

away from the

magic.

3. Etcheverry, jesfis. The Magic of/lscanio: The Structural

ConceptionofMagic, 2005, pg. 60.

TS‘SS the coin to your left hand and legitimately replace the
pen back under your left arm. You apparently transfer :Ee
coin to your right hand and pocket it. Actually, the coin is
secretly retained in your left finger palm as your :ght thumb
and fingers clench together, as if holding a coin. Pretend to
pocket the coin.
Tetract your empty right hand from your trouser pocket and
retrieve the pen from under your arm. Position it : etween
your hands, in preparation for Flip Hallema’sFlipstickMove,
used here to change the pen into the coin.

This sleight, developed with Rune's frequent

collaboratorKlaus Mulbjerg is not difficult in practice, but
requires :tecision.

Hold the ends of the pen between the thumb and first two
fingers of each hand (figure 26). As you grip the left :T.Cl of
the pen with your left fingers, transfer the coin in left finger
palm to curl palm. This is accomplished by :1“ll1’1gtl’1€ left
third finger until the coin pivots to a position parallel to the
floor (figure 27).

hopping.
Rune’s World | 51

i :'.‘e the left hand forward until the concealed, palmed

selection clears the other, displayed card. Immediately
’:TT3Ct your left hand toward the visible card in your right
hand. Slide the palmed selection under the right “:gers,
aligned with the displayed card (figure 65). Alignment isn’t
critical here because your left hand still : s;ures the
audience’s view. Just concentrate on a smooth, quiet action.

{ :w to fix any alignment issues. Under the guise of moving

your left hand to the left to reveal the change, you :1: make
a wiping gesture with your left thumb and fingers. Move
your left thumb upward against the left end : :he card as
you wipe the left fingers leftward across the upper side of
the double card (figure 66). The card has :ianged; the
selection has appeared (figure 67).

the card doesn’t leave your sight

One attribute of the Full Palm Change is that the card

apparently never goes out of sight. You can point this out to
your spectators, instructing them to watch the inner left
corner of the card (from their point of view).
Figures 68-70 show how the sequence would look to a
spectator, and how, even as the move is executed, the inner
left corner is never fully obscured from view.

as if jingling the coins. Actually, the right wrist cocks back

momentarily, allowing the remaining coin to slide from the
purse, through the slot, and into the right hand (figure 50).
The steal takes less than two seconds.

With the right hand, table the purse. As you move toward
the table, curl the right fingers around the concealed coin.
At the same time, gently press the purse completely closed
with the right fingers, taking care that no noise is made as
the clasp is shut.

Pick up the tabled coin and place it on top of the purse. In

rapid succession, each hand will produce its coin. The left
hand begins by pushing the palmed coin to the fingertips as
the fingers hover over the exposed coin on top of the purse.
A clicking sound should be made between the two coins as
the left hand’s coin is produced. As you place the left hand’s
coin on the table to the left of the purse, produce the right
hand’s coin in a similar fashion.

The right hand’s coin is tabled to the right of the purse

(figure 51). To conclude, remove the coin on top of the purse
and show the purse to be completely empty.

three coins and a purse | explanation

This is the final piece of ”Getting Down.” Although it is the

most challenging, it’s chock full of startling appearances
and vanishes.
EFFECT: Three coins vanish one by one. The first appears on
the coin purse, the second beneath it, and third one. . .on
the magician’s face!

SETUP: Simply reorganize the props in play by placing all

three coins in a row toward the front of the pad. Pick up the
purse and snap it shut. But as you snap the purse shut,
firmly clamp the bottom of the bag to give it a pronounced
concave bend (figure 52). Stiff leather has a memory for
subtle bends like this. Now table the purse so the bend is
angled toward your left (figure 53, audience view).

PERFORMANCE: Pick up the leftmost coin and execute a

Goshman false transfer (pg. 22). With the coin secretly
retained in right classic palm, wave your right fingers over
your left fist and then open your left hand to show that the
coin has disappeared.

kurtz’s curl palm transfer

As you approach the table, these are the actions you

execute with your right fingers: Extend your first and second
fingers slightly, which exposesthe edge of the stack (figure
1). Place your right :hurnb pad on the edges of all the coins
and roll the stack upward along the base of the fingers
(figure 2).

Now you rotate the stackbetween your second finger and

thumb. To do this, curl the second finger inward and around
the stack at its lowest point (figure 3). Rotate the stack by
pivoting the second finger forward at its base as you move
your thumb downward. At the conclusionof the sleight, the
second finger is wrapped around the stack while the thumb
pad pins it against the second finger (figure 4).

2l

4|

PERFORMANCE: As you introduce yourself to your audience,

take care to gesture freely with your left hand.

it's important that the audience realizes-—on a

subconscious level--that your left hand is empty. You will
begin :ne routine by transferring the stack from right curl
palm to left finger palm. The transfer is accomplished during
a hand-washing gesture. Extend your right second finger so
that the stack is pinned into place by the inner joint 3f the
second finger and the outer joint of the thumb (figure 5).
Situate these extended right fingers on top of your palm up,
outstretched left hand (figure 6). Slide your right hand
forward, down the length of your left palm
92 | Rune’s World

Your right thumb may move slightly to accommodate the

action, but with the right hand curled inward, the audience's
view of the thumb is largely obstructed. If you use a delicate
touch, you’ll find it can be done almost silently and covered
under even minimal ambient noise. The Fan Transfer takes
only a moment to carry out.

40|

Once you have stolen the silver coin into your right palm,
toss the two coins (as three) at the right fingertips into .

your left hand.

In a moment you’ll drop the right hand’s silver coin directly

from classic palm onto the spectator’s outstretched hand.
Since you conceal four coins in this position, there is a risk
of dropping more than one coin. To minimize this risk, take a
moment to perform this tiny adjustment. Just after tossing
what appears to be all three silver coins into your left hand,
extend your second finger onto the stack of palmed coins
(figure 41). Now retract your l second finger pad to stagger
the silver coin forward for approximately a third of its length
nearest the base of the fingers (figure 42).

Now you’re set to perform the first phase of the routine,

wherein a silver coin jumps from your left hand to the
spectator’s outstretched palm. Place your right hand on top
of hers, keeping your hand as flat as possible l r
without dropping the stack of coins. A tip here is to keep the
right thumb against the hand (figure 43) where it looks less
suspicious than if it is cocked out, at an unnatural angle.

Open the left fist to reveal only two coins. A split second
later, allow the silver coin to fall from right-hand classic
palm onto the spectator’s palm. She will feel the coin arrive
and react accordingly. Retract your right hand so .

that she can see the coin she felt arrive. Transfer the left
hand's two coins to the right fingertips and display them l ‘

at chest height.
