In our lesson, we did achieve both our language and content objectives.

Our language objective

was that students will watch a short clip and create sentences using vocabulary and concepts of

women’s lacrosse to describe it. We assessed the students on this objective through the last

activity where the students watched a clip of a game and wrote down scenarios that they saw

while using vocabulary that was taught. We had them share what they wrote and were correct

with their answers. Our content objective was that students will be able to identify basic rules,

positions, and fouls that occur in a women’s lacrosse game. We know that they achieved this

objective through the use of the whiteboard activity. The students wrote all the write answers to

our questions that dealt with the rules, positions, and fouls.

I feel that for the most part, we “immersed” the students in the vocabulary. By the end of the

lesson, the students were able to communicate to us using the vocabulary words and explain

game situations. We could have reinforced the vocabulary words a bit more throughout the

power point but for some of the words we have videos to add a visual to make sure the students

understood.

I think that we had a good amount of interaction working with other students. For the whiteboard

activity, the students were able to talk to each other before writing down their answer to prompt

more discussion and clear up any misunderstandings that some students may have had. Also, our

final activity the students completed individually but then talked to their table about what they

observed in the game. By doing this, they were able to verbally express the game of lacrosse and

the vocabulary words we taught.

One aspect of the SIOP process that I find effective and should be in a lesson plan is background

knowledge. With ELL students, it is extremely important build a connection between what the

students already know and what is being taught. In order for students to fully understand, that
bridge must be built between the two, and therefore included in every lesson. Another important

part of the SIOP process is comprehensible input. This should always be included in a lesson

because it is important that all students understand what is being asked of them. It addresses

multiple learning styles and allows all students, especially ELL students to understand. Lastly,

learning strategies that are effective should always be incorporated into a lesson. You should

always consider what strategies will be most effective and beneficial for all students. Also, it is

important to include strategies that promote critical thinking and higher-order skills.

After completing the lesson, I think I would focus on the vocabulary words a bit more next time.

We addressed all the words but we could have gone more in depth and reinforced them more.

Also, we could have given maybe a guided worksheet with the vocabulary words for them to

help them throughout the lesson.
