Objectives:

• Students will be able to observe a picture walk and make predictions based off the
illustrations in a story.
• Students will be able to make connections from the story to their personal lives.
• Students will be able to construct their own drawing of a classroom that is considered
welcoming in their eyes that is completed by coloring it in the end.

Art Standards:
5.1.2.2.2
Use observation and investigation in preparation for making a work of art.

Materials:
• “All Are Welcome” picture book by Alexandra Penfold
• White construction paper
• Pencils
• Crayons, Markers, or Colored Pencils

Procedure:
1. First the class will do a picture walk to look at the illustrations in the book “All Are
Welcome” by Alexandra Penfold. We will start making predictions about what the
story may be about by looking at the pictures. We will look at some pages more in
depth and look for the elements and principles of art within the illustration. The
classroom pages would be more focused upon because that is what our assignment is
based on. Part 1 will take about 4 minutes.
2. Next the teacher will read the story. The students will listen and start making
connections to their lives. The teacher will summarize the story in the end and talk
about how it relates to their classroom, and we want everyone to feel welcome in the
classroom. Part 2 will take about 4 minutes.
3. Lastly the teacher will introduce the drawing that students will make. The students
are going to get a piece of white construction paper. They are going to draw a
classroom that makes them feel welcome and label 3 parts that make them feel most
welcome in their drawn-out classroom. The students are then going to color the
classroom that they created to add more detail. Part 3 will take about 7 minutes and
if students do not finish, they will finish during other work times throughout the
day.

Assessments:
The students will be assessed by observation and the work they turn in. Students should be
listening throughout the picture walk and being a part of the conversation about the
predictions of the story. Students will also be creating there drawing, labeling their 3 parts in
the room that will make them feel welcomed, and coloring the drawing which will be turned
in to check for understanding.

Visual Literacy:
The activity of looking through the story book through the picture walk is engaging students
to predict what is going to happen in this story based on the illustrations. This is important
for students because it engages their deeper thinking through looking at the illustrations in
the story. The students will be able to look at many different elements and principles
throughout their picture walk like colors, shapes, value, space, etc. and contrast, variation,
balance, etc.

This activity would be a beginning of the year activity introducing students into the classroom
just to see what makes students feel welcome in my classroom.
