395/96 2022 Final Portfolio and Self-Critique

You will put together a digital portfolio of all the work you have completed throughout the semester. Along
with a last “Self-Critique/Learning Application Paper” to turn in for final review. The portfolio will need to
be created digitally using either Evernote or Weebly. I will be demonstrating how to use these applications,
so you feel comfortable doing them in class. There needs to be a header or title for each section. This will
allow me to easily go through the portfolio and find each section. The title of each header should be taken
from the list below. A point will be taken off of every section that does not have a header. Please try to go
in the order shown as well. The last section of this portfolio will have a small rubric associated with it so
you can understand what is required. The parts of the portfolio should be placed in the order shown in the
check-off list below.

**You will need upload the link for the Weebly site on a word document in D2L or Share it to me in
Evernote by the last day or class.

Self-Critique and Learning Application Assignment
You will need to look back and critique/reflect on your learning this semester. In art we are always looking
back at our work, to see how we have improved and what we could still do better. I want you to do the
same in this assignment. Take a look at your work and start to think about the kind of classroom and class
structure you want to have someday. What are the skills from this classroom that you think will help you
get there? This should be done as a paper and typed and inserted as the section of your portfolio. The
following questions need to be answered.

1.) How have you grown as a teacher from the information you’ve learned this semester? (5 points) Give
me your general impressions here about the kind of teacher you were when you walked into the
classroom and the kind of teacher you are as you leave this class. Like a thesis statement.

I only ever took one art class in high school so I never knew a lot about art and different styles,
principles, etc. Now that I have taken this class, it has opened my eyes to the possibility of creativity in
my own classroom. You can use art in so many different ways and combine it with other lessons that
you are doing in the class. I came into this class going, “oh, just another basic art class that is not going
to alter my viewpoint at all and just going to give me some basic ideas” to now thinking about it more
like, “now that I have taken this class, I have a lot more insight to how I can use different things
(elements, principles, VTS, etc.) in my own classroom). I am a lot more open now that I have taken this
art class.

2.) What skills from this class do you plan to use in your teaching/pedagogy? (10 points) Cite at least 3
different skills that you plan to use in the classroom and how you might use it to be a better teacher.

- Creativity: I think that throughout this class, I learned to be a more creative person. I designed
lessons, made art, discussed different topics and so much more. I try to be more creative as I move
through the Ed blocks and get closer to becoming a real teacher because I think that students need
creativity in their lives. If I am a creative person, I can try to instill that into students minds that
they can be creative too.
- Classroom Management for an Art Day: I learned some classroom management tips and tricks for
an Art day or a day like we did for TAB. It is different for college students but sort of the same
concepts. I would want to prep ahead of time to take away the chance for things to go wrong when
teaching the lesson, I would have certain things set up to use or put things away that cannot be
used, and I would make sure I have my examples ready so that students are not waiting on me.
These are all things that I would say could be good classroom management because if you have
your students waiting on you as a teacher because you were not prepared, that is when issues start
to occur.
- Integration Skills: I think that by creating some lessons and looking at VTS examples, I have learned
some great skills at integrating art with other subjects such as social studies and literacy. I think
that this is a great skill to have, especially when art tends to be pushed aside. Students need art in
elementary school and if they are not getting the right amount they need, well at least I have some
skills towards integrating some art with other lessons.
3.) What did you find most useful to your upcoming teaching practice? (5 points) Evaluate what the
most beneficial part of the class was for you and why you feel that way. Be sure to justify and defend
your reasoning with how it will help your teaching practice.

I think the most beneficial part for my through this class was designing lesson plans for an art lesson
and getting feedback from peers and the professor with how I did on writing those lesson plans. I think
that because I have an insight to writing better lesson plans for art lessons, I can do better and be
successful in my own classroom someday.

4.) What sparked your interest and is something that you plan to look into further? (5 points) Here’s
where you have to think about something that you might not know everything about yet, but would
like to continue looking into. Tell me what that might be and explain your reasoning for why you want
to explore it further. How do you think it will help you grow as a teacher someday?

Visual literacy is by far the topic that intrigued me. I think that it is such a broad and huge topic that I
would love to continue digging deeper into and someday incorporating it into my own classroom. I
think that visual literacy is a great way for students to be engaged and I think it should be something
every teacher incorporates into their classroom. I think it will help me be a more engaging teacher and
help to keep students engaged while learning.
