Bulking in Sand
I. Objective
The purpose of the experiment is to determine the percent dry
weight or the bulking percentage of the fine aggregate.

II. Materials
1 pc Measure Clean moist cloth
1 pc Graduated
Cylinder
2 pcs Drying Pans
1 pc Straight edge
Potable water

III. Procedure
The sand selected by the method of quartering were
oven dried with a constant weight at a temperature of 105 °C to
110 °C. Afterwards, it was placed in the measure without jarring
or shaking the measure scraping the excess soil. The measured
pan with the soil were weighed and recorded. The sand was then
placed in a clean and dry pan and the added with 2% of water by
weight of the dry sand. The sand and water were mixed thoroughly and again placed
in the measure without jarring or shaking, scraping off the excess sand.
Placing the sand in the pan again to add another 2% percent water
by its weight and mixing it well. The sand was again placed in the
measure, scraping off the excess. The procedure was repeated
until there will be no more excess sand scraped from the measure.
IV. Data and Computation
Mass of sand + Amount of Water Percent Dry
Trial Number
Measure (g) Added (mL) Weight (%)
1 697 13.94 100
2 599 11.18 85.93
3 539 10.78 77.33
4 525 73.89
Mass of container: 348 g
Calculations:
Amount of Water:
1 mL
Amount of Water= ( mass of sand +measure ) ( 2 ) ( )
1 gram

Trial
1 697 x 0.02 = 13.94 mL
2 599 x 0.02 = 11.18 mL
3 539 x 0.02 = 10.78 mL

Percent Dry Weight:

weight of sand + water added
Dry Weight = x 100

V. Conclusion

Moist sand occupies larger volume if loosely filled in, than dry sand. Due to moisture,
this effect of increase in volume (if looselyfilled in) due to moisture content is called
“Bulking of sand”.

While batching of aggregates, if weight batching is adopted which is precise and

prefered method of batching of aggregate,no effect is taken place due to bulking of
sand. How ever, if batching is done by volume, then less sand than required as per mix
design, will be measured. This results in disproportionate and non
uniform concrete mixes and may affects the compressive strength of concrete.
Therefore it will be necessary to increase the volume of sand by the ‘percentage’
bulking.

Due to bulking, fine aggregate shows completely unrealistic volume. Therefore, it is

absolutely necessary that consideration must be given to the effect of bulking in
proportioning the concrete by volume. If care is not given to the effect of bulking, in the
case of volume batching, the resulting concrete is likely to be undersanded and harsh. It
will also affect the yield of concrete for a given cement content.
