Learning Earth Patterns, Cycles, and Change 3.8:

Objective

The student will investigate and understand basic patterns and cycles
occurring in nature. Key concepts include:

a) patterns of natural events such as day and night, seasonal

changes, simple phases of the moon, and tides

b) animal life cycles

c) plant life cycles

Pedagogy Complete this sentence by naming the technology tool and the creation activity:
Planning

In this activity, my students are going to use ABC Ya! Paint to create a painting that will explain
a naturally occurring events.
Pedagogy Activity

1. We’ve been covering naturally reoccurring events they have

all of those glued into their interactive Science notebook.
Each student with their mobile device will go to ABC Ya! Paint
(links to mobile device apps are at the bottom of the lesson
plan) and create a painting that represents a naturally
reoccurring event.

2. They may pick from the following naturally reoccurring

event:

-Phases of the moon

● They must draw and LABEL each phase correctly

using the text box option.

-Seasonal Changes

● Have them split their picture into 4 sections (like a

cross) and draw a picture of each season.

-Day or Night

● For this one they must show which direction the

sun rises and sets using the words “East” and
“West”, they also must show when the sun is at its
highest point in the sky AND give times of the day.

-Tides

● For this one they must tell how long tides last (6
hours) that information is in their interactive
notebooks
 -Animal Life Cycle

● Pick an animal from birth to end of life, they have a

butterfly in their notebook.

-Plant Life Cycle

● Pick a plant from seed to fruit.

3. They MUST label each part of the cycle (see example below)
and put type their name on it. ABC Ya! Paint does have the
option to add a text box, please help them if they ask but
they are self-sufficient.

4. Give them about 15-20 minutes to create their own

reoccurring event. Help screenshot/save to device and
upload the image to the assignment on Canvas. (I will get
alerts when it is uploaded) and if they would like to they may
each present them to the class.
