414.271 해양 열/전기 기초 2017 봄 Exam 1

You can solve the problems in any order you want.

There are various ways to answer the questions. Any one is OK, if it is reasonable.
A trivial difference in the number is not important.
If the procedure is correct, you will get a partial score even though the number is not correct.
A unit must be specified in your final answer.
You can assume what you need.
Please remember. Engineering has no right answer. What you need is the ability of decision-making.

1. Answer these questions

(a) Explain why the work can be divided into the flow work and shaft work.
(b) Explain what is the enthalpy and how can we use it.
(c) Explain what is the entropy and how can we use it.
(d) Explain how can we use ∆𝒉 = ∫ 𝒄𝒑 𝒅𝑻 to calculate enthalpy difference.
(e) Explain what is the standard enthalpy of formation.

2. Rankine cycle
This is a PFD (Process Flow Diagram) of a steam Rankine cycle, which you are designing.
Answer the questions. You can assume what you need.

(a) Design your own Rankine cycle. Decide the temperature and pressure of each stream 1, 2,
3 and 4. If a stream is not one phase, specify the vapor fraction also. Any reasonable
condition is accepted.
(b) Calculate the efficiency of your Rankine cycle.

3. Refrigeration cycle
This is a P-h diagram of a refrigeration cycle by using refrigerant R-134a. Answer the
questions.

(a) Calculate COP (coefficient of performance) of this refrigeration cycle.

(b) In hot summer, the performance of refrigeration cycle may become worse. Explain the
reason and show an example case with its COP.

4. Petroleum gas cylinder

PG (petroleum gas) means a mixture of propane and
butane gas. You are planning a venture company that
sells PG to Korean gas consumers.
You plan to sell a cylinder of volume of 0.2m3 filled
with PG. To decide the wall thickness of a cylinder,
the required pressure condition must be specified.
When the wall thickness is too thin, it cannot endure
the inner gas pressure and the cylinder would
explode. However when the wall thickness is too
thick, the production cost of a cylinder increases and
your profit is decreased. Therefore, you want to calculate how much pressure a cylinder must
endure. When RK-EOS is used, answer the questions. You can assume what you need.

(a) You want to fill a cylinder with 50 mol of gas mixture of 60% propane gas and 40% butane
gas. To decide the required pressure for your cylinder, you need to set a design
temperature. Decide a reasonable design temperature and explain why you select that
temperature. Then, how much pressure the cylinder must endure?
(b) As a by-product, you plan to produce butane cylinder also. An engineer advised to you that
some liquid butane may be generated in your cylinder when you fill a butane cylinder with
50 mol of butane. Check whether the advice is true or not. If the advice is true, how much
percent of liquid is generated in your cylinder? If the advice is not true, how much
minimum pressure specification is required for the cylinder wall?
