2.2.2 Environmental Conditions

Typical environmental conditions in the field are generally expected to be benign for installation
purposes, with a 95% non-exceedence of Hs 1.3m, with the exception of occasional tropical
storms. It should however be noted that there rare occasions when less favourable weather may
occur due to the north-west monsoon season over the period from December to March. Ref. /A4/
2.2.3 Soil Conditions
The soil conditions within the Field are typically described as “loose silty sand” at seabed level
with underlying clay of varying strength down to at least 25m depth. Ref. /A2/, /A3/

The only seabed features observed within the site were scattered isolated pockmarks.

The soil layer data including submerged unit weight, undrained shear strength and friction angle
are presented in Ref. /A2/, /A3/

The first layer of seabed soil is silty sand except the silty clay at NW cluster.

2.4.4 Installation Loads

Refer to the following document: 4059-CA-00213955, Mooring Installation Analysis. Ref. /B3/

The table overleaf provides a summary of installation loads and limiting criteria, the following list
highlights the physical restrictions.

Restrictions applicable for table below:

 Piles – Slack Wires when passing through splashzone
 Pile Hammer – deck operations

Notes for table below:

1. Maximum significant wave weight (Hs) for operations is for vessel heading +/- 30 deg to
wave direction.
2. The max allowable Hs are limited by the SWL of lifting rigging, refer to rigging design
report.
3. The crane tip velocity and acceleration, monitored via the vessel MRU, are the governing
limiting criteria, maximum Hs may be exceeded if crane tip velocity/acceleration remains
below the level noted.
4. The load for Pile Guide Frame recovery from seabed is estimated by IHC from their
experience.

The following data can be used for guidance.

2.4.5 Pile Driving Parameters

The Summary of Geotechnical design of driven anchor piles from APL/ NGI report, Ref. /C2/ is
as follows:
ITEM RESULTS
Pile dimensions:
Pile diameter 2,134 m (84 inch)
Steel wall thickness 50 mm (2 inches)
Pile penetration depth (minimum) 25.0 m
Total pile length 25.0 m
Padeye location below pile top 16.0 m

Pile capacity:
Pile stress utilization factor; yield 350 MPa (ULS) 0.14
Pile stress utilization factor; yield 350 MPa (ALS) 0.20
Max lateral deflection of pile (ULS/ALS) 3.7 cm / 5.6 cm

Pile driveability
Hammer size investigated MHU-270 (equivalent to S-280)
Hammer efficiencies 30% / 50% / 75%
Total number of blows 1485 / 1006 / 750
Max no blows/0.25 m 38 / 26 / 19
Max/ Min pile stress during driving (MPa) 148 MPa / -139 MPa

It is estimated that if high estimate soil strength with hard clay layer within the top 5m is
experienced the pile self weight penetration would be in the range from 1m to 3m. This
penetration would not be sufficient for the pile to be stable prior to driving with hammer on top. A
pile guide frame is therefore required to support the pile during installation. The hard clay layer
seems most likely to occur at the SW and SE anchor pile clusters.

Six design profiles are identified. These design profiles include low estimate and
high estimate conditions with and without stiff clay and sand layer. The undrained shear strength
design profiles are as follows:
 Soil Profile 1 - low estimate without hard clay
 Soil Profile 2 - low estimate with hard clay
 Soil Profile 3 - high estimate without hard clay
 Soil Profile 4 - high estimate with hard clay
 Soil Profile 5 - low estimate with top sand (0 - 2m) and extended hard clay (2 - 5m)
 Soil Profile 6 - high estimate with top sand (0 - 2m) and extended hard clay (2 - 5m)

Pile Driving
The TSB piles were assumed to be driven to their target tip depth by the Menck MHU- 270
hammer. Driveability analyses were carried out using hammer efficiencies of 30%, 50%, and
75%. These efficiencies correspond to energy values of 90 kJ, 150 kJ and 225 kJ respectively.
Calculated pile driving resistance are summarised in Table 1 and 2 below for Soil Profile 1 and
4, respectively.

condition (i.e. e = 1.0) with a hammer efficiency of 75%. It is calculated that driving resistances
increase due to set-up effect. Nevertheless, this increase in driving resistance is well below the
refusal levels (Maximum N25 when re-driving after the stop was found to be 36 blows)

Pile self weight penetration

Pile self weight penetration without penetration due to hammer was estimated to be 11.0 m
when the low estimate soil strength without hard clay layer (Soil Profile 1) is experienced. On the
other hand, if high estimate soil strength with hard clay layer (Soil Profile 4) soil is experienced,
then the self weight penetration of the pile could be as little as 1.1 m and if high estimate soil
with top sand (0 - 2m) and extended hard clay (2 - 5 m) (Soil Profile 6) is experienced, then the
self weight penetration of the pile could be about 3.0 m.

Pile guide frame and pile position, orientation and inclination.

Carry out position, orientation and inclination survey at each pile
location during pile guide frame landing operations.
1. ROV can dock onto a ROV docking frame mounted on the pile
guide frame.
This option also provides the opportunity for the ROV to use its
thrusters to steer the guide frame onto the correct heading prior to
landing.
2. If the ROV cannot be docked onto the pile guide frame (e.g. due
to vessel heave) there are transponder buckets located on the
guide frame which can be used to park two transponders.
If this option is employed the ROV will utilise an ROV steering bridle
to steer the guide frame onto the correct heading prior to landing. SR/RS
4.
Both options provide a fixed reference position with known offsets to SS
establish the pile guide frame position and orientation before and
after landing.
Note: The verticality of the mooring piles is governed by the
verticality of the pile guide frame. There are two main modes of
inclination survey:
1. Primary method is via the bullseye mounted on the pile guide
frame in front of the ROV docking station.
2. In case of failure of the bullseye the ROV can land on the ROV
docking station and use its survey gyro.

Sub–Task #3.2 Preparation of Chain and Connection to Pile

It is essential that no twist is imposed into the chain during lay
operations. The chain from in the chain coral, chain gypsy winch and
1. chain chute ensure that the chain is deployed without twist, the deck INFO
crew should make best efforts to avoid adding twist during deck
handling operations.
Recover chain end (Special End link of chain to connect to Pile) from
the chain coral using the main crane whipline or Auxiliary crane,
stripping out enough chain to allow the end to be laid over the chain
gypsy.
2. If not already completed, Paint the vertical chain links i.e. every DF
alternate chain link before the chain entering gypsy winch for twist
monitoring during the laying operation.
Refer to the following drawings / sketches:
 General Chain Handling Rigging Details, 4059-XG-00288330.001

connect LCS chain to the pile’s top padeye. This is to pre-lay the LCS
chain prior to starting piling and to keep enough slack chain during
piling operation.
Complete any final adjustments to the chain catenary as required to
assist laying away from the pile. SS/DP
2. Note: The pile stability analysis considers that up to 1t, or 10m, of RS
LCS chain can hang from the pile padeye without compromising
stability of the pile in the pile guide frame
Considering the current weather conditions, position vessel with
starboard side perpendicular to the pile (+/-45° approx). Commence
paying out chain via the chain gypsy winch while stepping the vessel
along the lay corridor.
ROV to monitor TDP, increase vessel offset from pile until approx.
10m layback is achieved.
Commence paying out chain and stepping vessel away from the pile
in 5m increments, maintaining at least 10m layback for the first 50m.
Note: A short layback should be maintained to prevent undue side SS/DF
loading on pile prior to the pile driving operations. DP
3.
Increase layback to approx. 20m after the first 50m has been laid; RS
continue normal lay of the chain maintaining approx. 30-40m layback
to maintain tension in chain thus laying it straight and without slack.
Mooring corridor lay tolerance is +/- 2.5m
Refer to the following drawings / sketches:

Sub–Task #6.1 Pile Hammer & Follower Deployment
Based on the weather forecast the Offshore Manager, after liaison
1. OM
with Master, will take the decision to commence the installation
works.
Assemble hammer hang-off pennant rigging arrangement c/w 250t
ROV hook as per drawing.
Lift hang-off pennant assembly using crane whipline via the chain
links, slew outboard and lower into water, align chain links with the
hammer hang-off slot, then slew crane inboard to engage chain links
into slot.
Note: Assembly weight of hang-off pennant approx. 2100kg. DF/SS
2.
Note: It is imperative that deck and local obstructions are free from
sharp edges or snagging hazards to avoid any risk of damage to the
dyneema hang-off pennant.
Secure the chain links in-situ.

Install Follower into Pile Hammer sleeve as follows:
 Connect 2-leg bridle to the follower as per sketch.
Note; ensure that the follower lifting beam is orientated to suit the
reciprocal padeyes on the hammer sleeve
 Connect suitable holdback tuggers using the crane CT winches
and the deck tagline winches
 Lift and reposition the follower from its storage position until
adjacent the hammer in its upending frame.
 Align the follower with the hammer sleeve, engage the follower
6. DF/SC2
into the sleeve
 Install rigging between the follower lifting beam and the hammer
sleeve padeyes.
Note; This rigging is oversized to cope with any additional
withdrawal loads when pulling the follower out of the driven piles
Refer to the following drawings / sketches:
 Hammer and Follower Deployment Storyboard, 4059-KA-

 Hammer and Follower Connecting Rigging, V_001277
Lift & Shift Pile hammer c/w Follower from storage position on its
upending frame to deployment position as follows:
 Connect Pile hammer c/w Follower deck lift rigging to main crane
 Attach suitable holdback tuggers using the crane CT winches and
the deck tagline winches
Note; Ensure that a deck tugger is attached on the upper section of
Hammer to assist holding down and prevent over tipping during Lift &
Shift operation.
7. DF/SC2
 Release securing rigging from the Hammer and Follower if any
 Lift and shift the Pile hammer c/w Follower from its storage
position on upending frame to the deployment position.
 Secure Pile hammer c/w Follower on the upending frame as
required
 Disconnect deck lift rigging from Pile hammer and Follower
 Connect main crane to the Pile hammer c/w Follower deployment
rigging at the top of Hammer
Utilising the deck tugger winches, prepare a winch tagline system
running along the centreline of the pile hammer upending frame
heading towards the starboard side.
8. DF/PE
Note: The tugger is to be attached near the top of the hammer to
prevent the assembly overturning during the upending process, since
this may lead to the follower clashing with the vessel side and to
assist tailing out, and pulling in the hammer to the upending cradles.
Vessel to assume best heading for deployment of the pile hammer
9. SS/DP
considering that the heading is unrestricted since the LCS mooring
chain has been pre-laid on seabed.

Monitor actual wave height to verify forecast conditions.
Monitor vessel motion. If conditions are marginal, and if available, use OM
crane MRU with appropriate offset to predicted crane tip position
10. SS
during splashzone lift to assess actual crane tip motion.
Upon verification that conditions are within the acceptable lifting PE
criteria, the Offshore Manager, or his deputy, after liaison with Master,
will take the decision to commence the lifting operation.
Connect holdback tugger(s) to masterlink on side of pile sleeve.
Generally, one tugger will be utilised to minimise swing due to vessel
11. pitch and roll. An additional tugger may be utilised as required. DF
Note: Generally, one tugger may remain attached to the pile hammer
during deployment operations to control rotation of the hammer to
avoid umbilicals wrapping around the hammer or crane wire.
Connect hammer lift rigging arrangement at the 2.5m short grommet
dyneema sling to crane main block as per sketch.
Refer to the following drawings / sketches:
 Pile Hammer & Follower Deployment Rigging Details, 4059-XG-
12. DF
00279817.001
Note: Due to the limit of crane hook height for Hammer deployment
the 2.5m short grommet dyneema sling is required to lift the hammer
off / on deck and the 5m long grommet dyneema sling will be used to
transfer hammer to the hang-off pennant.
13. Remove all seafastenings. DF

14. Ensure that sufficient slack is paid out from the hammer umbilical and SC2
control line to allow upending to commence without risk of snagging.
Upend hammer & follower on its upending frame.
Payout on hammer umbilical and control lines as required.
Ensure tugger winch connected to upper end of hammer is kept
15. under tension to prevent the assembly from overturning until the DF/SC2
hammer is fully upright.

1. all times.
DP
Refer to the following drawings / sketches:
 Pile Hammer & Follower Deployment Storyboards, 4059-KA-
00213943-SK-300
Stab pile follower slowly into the top of the pile.
After stabbing, lower the hammer & follower onto the pile, while
monitoring the pile penetration.
2. Note: Additional self weight penetration could be up to between 6.5m SS
to 16.8m.
Refer to the following drawings / sketches:
 Pile Hammer & Follower Deployment Storyboards, 4059-KA-
00213943-SK-300
Note:
At some pile locations there may be a risk of further pile self
penetration due to alternating hard and soft layers of soil, where the
pile may break through the hard layer, then descend into the SS
3. underlying soft later until stiffer soils encountered. The risk of pile
"runaway" is considered unlikely due to the consistently stiffening
soils encountered during previous soil surveys. Likelyhood of further
pile self penetration occurring is higher if initial self penetration was
small.
Lower off the crane hook, but maintain a minimum amount of slack in
4. case the situation noted above (additional self penetration) occurs. SS/SC2
Adjust the umbilical and control cable catenaries to provide and
maintain sufficient slack during pile driving.

5. Check chain catenary and route is hanging toward the opening of the SS/RS
pile guide mud-mats.

4.8 Task # 8 Contingency Task Description

4.8.1 Contingency Task Objectives
Contingency Task Objectives
The following tasks should be employed in the event that contingency measures are required.

4.8.2 Contingency Task Plan Description

Step Description Resp* Check+

Contingency Sub – Task #1 Vessel Positioning Failure During Product Laying Operations
Emergency procedures for Vessel Positioning Failure due to failure of
a positioning system are held onboard the vessel.
1. In the unlikely event that the vessel might lose position during product
laying operations there are several options depending on the failure
mode, the following actions should be considered:
If there is no connection between the vessel and any mooring leg,
2. halt operations until vessel can be brought under control and
stabilised on a back-up system. Investigate issue; resume operations
once all issues are addressed.
If there is connection between the vessel and a mooring line: Clear
the load path of the product, clear the deck of all non-essential
3. personnel. Pay out on the chain gypsy winch and/or crane
deployment winch during vessel move-off until the vessel can be
brought under control and stabilised on a back-up system. The chain
can be laid on the seabed and later recovered and repositioned.
If the vessel is brought under control and stabilised on a back-up
system, the ability of the vessel to continue laying operations will be
assessed, resulting in the following actions:
 If the vessel is able to continue lay operations, the chain will be
4. recovered to the position before move-off and re-laid.
 If the vessel is unable to continue lay operations, the vessel will
be on stand-by until the failure is corrected.
 A controlled abandonment (or recovery, depending on the phase
of operation) should be considered.
Contingency Sub – Task #2 Equipment Failure
General
1. Failure of the laying equipment requires the operation to be stopped
during repair of the failed component. Spare parts for all critical
equipment are carried onboard.

Project: FPU for Terang Sirasun Batur Field Doc. No
Document Title : Mooring Pre-Installation Procedure 4059-KA-00213943, Rev. 0

Step Description Resp* Check+

Crane
2. Failure of the main crane will require the laying operation to be
suspended awaiting repair. Spare parts for all critical equipment are
carried onboard.
ROV failure
Installation will be stopped immediately if any breakdown of the ROV
is experienced and 2nd ROV with appropriate monitoring equipment
3. will be launched. Spare parts for all critical components are carried
onboard the installation vessel.
Where an activity would normally require twin ROV operations then a
dedicated HAZOP shall be performed to assess whether operations
may continue with single ROV support.
Pile Guide Frame Failure
The following contingency options are noted:
 Level of guide frame on seabed – if the pile guide frame lands out
4. of level tolerance it will be recovered off seabed and lowered
again, the operation can be repeated until the guide frame
mudmats redistribute the seabed to level it.
 Malfunction of guide frame or associated equipment will require
recovery to deck to complete remedial action.
Chain Gypsy Winch Failure
Failure of the Chain Gypsy Winch will require the chain laying
operation to be suspended awaiting repair.

5. In the unlikely event of complete irreparable failure of the chain winch,

it would be possible to abandon the chain to seabed by locking off the
chain in the deck stopper-off, then hand-over-hand the chain in short
lengths using the main crane and deck winches to assist (i.e. stopper
off chain on deck, connect crane above chain chute, lift chain, release
stopper off, lower chain, stopper off, repeat process)
Pile Hammer Failure
Failure of the Pile Hammer or associated equipment will require the
6. piling operations to be suspended and the hammer to be recovered to
deck to complete repairs. Spare parts for all critical equipment are
carried onboard.
Stuck Pile Follower
In the unlikely event that the Follower becomes stuck inside the pile
due to soil plug or other issue; The rigging between Hammer sleeve
7. and the Follower can be cut free to disconnect the two components.
The Pile Hammer can be recovered to deck first then redeploy crane
to pull out the Follower via the 2x pre-installed masterlinks using
heavy duty rigging.

Project: FPU for Terang Sirasun Batur Field Doc. No
Document Title : Mooring Pre-Installation Procedure 4059-KA-00213943, Rev. 0

Step Description Resp* Check+

Pile Follower Failure
The outer and inner pipe of Follower can be disconnected if required
8. by ROV cutting the securing sling at the lifting bar and pulling the
lifting bar out.
A spare outer follower is available on deck should failure occur at the
driving head.
Piling Refusal
Refer to Section 2.4.5
9. In case of piling refusal it will be necessary to release the mooring
line from the pile to release the vessel. The pile anchor shackle would
be cut with an ROV disc cutter. The mooring chain would be
recovered, and future actions agreed upon.
Excessive Chain Twist
Should survey establish that the mooring chain has been laid with
10. excessive twist then it will be necessary to deploy the main crane with
a suitable swivel and ROV hook assembly (35t SWL), recover the
chain off seabed then allow the twist to dissipate via the swivel. The
chain would then be redeployed and a further survey completed.
Controlled Abandonment
Controlled abandonment is the rapid lay-down of the mooring chain in
11. a location from which it can subsequently be recovered and re-laid.
Abandonment in this manner would be carried out only if in case of
emergency the vessel is unable to complete the laying operation as
per approved procedure.
